Venemaa - lähedane ja kauge II. Vürstiriigist tsaaririigiks. Ivan IV
See raamat on jätkuks Venemaa ajaloo esimesele osale, mis käsitles meie naaberriigi minevikku aegade algusest kuni Vassili III-ni, ääretu Moskva vürstiriigi valitsejani. History of Russian Christianity, Volume One, from the Earliest Years Through Tsar Ivan Iv
From Apostle Andrew to the conclusion of Soviet authority in 1990, Daniel H. Shubin presents the entire history of Christianity in Russia in a 4-volume series. The events, people and regions that created the traditions of Russian Christianity are presented objectively and intensively, describing the formation of the Russian Orthodox Church. Included in these volumes is research on the many dissenters and sectarian groups that evolved over the centuries, the influence of Catholicism and Protestantism on Russia, and the presence of Judaism. The history covers the higher levels of ecclesiastical activity with the involvement of tsars and prelates, as well as saints and serfs, and monks and mystics. This first volume, deals with the period from Apostle Andrew to the death of Tsar Ivan IV, a period of almost 1600 years. Daniel H. Shubin has translated and written several books on Russian history, religion and philosophy.
Die Tote Frau ALS Ikone: Zur Verbindung Von Tod, Weiblichkeit Und (Heiligen-)Bild Bei Fedor Dostoevskij, Vasilij Perov, Ivan Turgenev Und Evgenij Baue
The aestheticised female corpse as an image is a central motif in European art. In Russian culture, it is typically connected to the Orthodox icon. This study examines the petrification of living female figures as dead bodies. It traces the variety of functions and meanings these bodies unfold and reveals the arising aesthetically productive tensions between religion, ethics and art, between this world and beyond.

The Last Face You'll Ever See: The Culture of Death Row
In fascinating detail, Ivan Solotaroff introduces us to the men who carry out executions. Although the emphasis is on the personal lives of these men and of those they have to put to death, The Last Face You'll Ever See also addresses some of the deeper issues of the death penalty and connects the veiled, elusive figure of the executioner to the vast majority of Americans who, since 1977, have claimed to support executions. Why do we do it? Or, more exactly, why do we want to?The Last Face You'll Ever See is not about the polarizing issues of the death penalty -- it is a firsthand report about the culture of executions: the executioners, the death-row inmates, and everyone involved in the act. An engrossing, unsettling, and provocative book, this work will forever affect anyone who reads it.

Twenty-five beautifully written stories, penned in exile, evocatively depicting life on a manor in feudal Russia and examining the conflicts between serfs and landlordsA Sportsman's Notebook, Ivan Turgenev's first literary masterpiece, is a sweeping portrayal of the magnificent nineteenth-century Russian countryside and the harsh lives of those who inhabited it. In a powerful and gripping series of sketches, a hunter wanders through the vast landscape of steppe and forest in search of game, encountering a varied cast of peasants, landlords, bailiffs, overseers, horse traders, and merchants. He witnesses both feudal tyranny and the submission of the tyrannized, against a backdrop of the sublime and pitiless terrain of rural Russia. These exquisitely rendered stories, now with a stirring introduction from Daniyal Mueenuddin, were not only universally popular with the reading public but, through the influence they exerted on important members of the Tsarist bureaucracy, contributed to the major political event of mid-nineteenth-century Russia: the Great Emancipation of the serfs in 1861. Rarely has a book that offers such undiluted literary pleasure also been so strong a force for significant social change, one that continues to speak to readers centuries later.
