Metrical systems differ in patterns of stress assignment, the domains over which those patterns are built, and acoustic manifestations of stress. It has been widely debated in the phonological/phonetic literature how stress should be represented, what mechanisms govern its assignment, and whether the phonetic underpinnings of primary/secondary stress exist independently of other prominence effects (e.g. boundary strengthening, pitch accents). This Element addresses these fundamental issues on the basis of an in-depth study of a hybrid (lexical-grammatical) metrical system of Ukrainian. It synthesizes previous results with new findings, focusing on the phonetic as well as formal description of the Ukrainian system. The lexical-grammatical stress interactions in Ukrainian pose a challenge for current metrical theories, shed light on the relation between the lexical and grammatical stress domains, and the relationship between categorical and gradient aspects of the metrical system. Which law applies to armed conflict? This book investigates the applicability of international humanitarian law and international human rights law to armed conflict situations. The issue is examined by three scholars whose professional, theoretical, and methodological backgrounds and outlooks differ greatly. These multiple perspectives expose the political factors and intellectual styles that influence scholarly approaches and legal answers, and the unique trialogical format encourages its participants to decenter their perspectives. By focussing on the authors' divergence and disagreement, a richer understanding of the law applicable to armed conflict is achieved. The book, firstly, provides a detailed study of the law applicable to armed conflict situations. Secondly, it explores the regimes' interrelation and the legal techniques for their coordination and prevention of potential norm conflicts. Thirdly, the book moves beyond the positive analysis of the law and probes the normative principles that guide the interpretation, application and development of law.

WRITING FOR PSYCHOLOGY, Fourth Edition offers concise assistance for students writing their research analyses using APA style®. By providing concrete examples of common errors, the authors show rather than merely tell students what to do and what to avoid. This manual will help students adhere to the basics of APA style; refine critical thinking skills, library search skills, revising skills, editing skills, and proofing skills; and avoid plagiarism. Checklists precede a summary at the end of every chapter, giving students the chance to make sure they have been thorough in their reports.
Modeling of Induction Motors with One and Two Degrees of Mechanical Freedom presents the mathematical model of induction motors with two degrees of mechanical freedom (IM-2DMF), formed in the electromagnetic field as well as in circuit theory, which allows analyzing the performance of these three groups of motors taking into account edge effects, winding and current asymmetry. The model derived is based on the concept of magnetic field wave moving in the air-gap with a helical motion. In general, the rotor moves helically too with the rotary-linear slip. The electromagnetic field as well as motor performance of the particular motors is analyzed. The mathematical model of IM-2DMF is more general to the model of induction motors with one degree of mechanical freedom, i.e. rotary and linear motors. Examples of modeling two types of rotary disc motors and flat linear motor with twisted primary part are presented with inclusion of finite stator and rotor length and width effects. The simulation results are backed by the measurements carried out on the laboratory models, which were tested on the unique measurement stand.
This book is based on the results of our interest in the ?eld of ultrashort laser pulses interaction with matter. The aim of our monograph was to build the balanced description of the thermal transport phenomena generated by laser pulses shorter than the characteristic relaxation time. In the book we explore the matter on the quark, nuclear as well atomic scales. Also on the cosmic scale (Planck Era) the thermal disturbance shorter than the Planck time creates the new picture of the Universe. The mathematics, especially PDE, are the main tool in the description of the ultrashort thermal phenomena. Two types of the PDE: parabolic and hyperbolic partial di?erential equations are of special interest in the study of the thermal processes. We assume a moderate knowledge of basic Fourier and d’Alembert eq- tions. The scope of the book is deliberately limited to the background of the quantum mechanics equations: Schr¨ odinger and Klein-Gordon. In this book the attosecond laser pulses are the main source of the dist- bance of the thermal state of the matter. Recently, the attosecond laser pulses constitute a novel tool for probing processes taking place on the time scale of electron motion inside atoms. The research presented in this book appears to provide the basic tools and concepts for attosecond thermal dynamics. Nevertheless much research is still needed to make this emerging ?eld routinely applicable for a broad range of processes on atomic and subatomic scales.

Whether you are stuck in the distress of life, or appear like nothing’s wrong, you may have faced trauma or incredible stress or suffocating fear. Maybe you wonder whether those emotions, memories, and experiences are blocking you from being as fulfilled and happy as you could be. Maybe you’re stuck in patterns that simply no longer work for you. What if you could change it all? What if you could feel safe and solid and secure inside your own body? What if your life could be peaceful and centered and fulfilled? In Becoming Safely Embodied, Deidre Fay shares from her 35 years of psychotherapy and spiritual practice to provide a truly practical way to integrate modern neurobiology and ancient wisdom to finally and completely heal from emotional trauma, no matter how deep or faint, how long ago or recent you experienced the pain. Throughout her years as a therapist, Deirdre noticed that clients would make progress while in a therapy session and then revert to old patterns between sessions. What people need is a set of skills and practices to support ongoing healing and wholeness. That's what this book will help you with. You’ll discover: What “trauma” is and why you might have had a hard time healing from this pain, Why shame is an attachment wound and how to harness self-compassion to truly transform suffering, What to do when you feel like you’re easily “triggered” by a certain person or situation in your life so that you can stay centered and safe, Instantly effective methods of breath work for brain change and emotional regulation so that you can calm your mind or energize your body, The nine core skills that can help you to be more at home with your internal world and cultivate a body that’s a safe place for rest, reflection, and wellbeing, Simple daily practices that (like brushing your teeth) promote ongoing healing in your body, mind, and soul, And much, much more. Whether you are healing from abandonment issues or from pain or from grief—or whether you are helping someone else to heal—Becoming Safely Embodied is your map and guidebook to finally becoming at home with your internal world, cultivating a body that’s a safe place for rest, reflection, and wellbeing, and creating the life you want to live, instead of living in the life your history catapults you into. You may be wondering, “Is it possible for ME? Can I change? Is it possible for me to shift these painful patterns into a more fulfilling life? Can I truly organize this crazy inner world?” The simple answer is, “Yes,” and your journey to becoming safely embodied begins inside the pages of this book.
The reason I chose the name The Butterfly Effect because people around the world view the butterfly as a representation of endurance, change, hope, and life. The butterfly effect is the idea that a small change can make much bigger changes happen. As a survivor, you must educate yourself on the signs of abuse. You must collect resources and build structures in an effort to thrive and survive. Despite the fact that the butterfly effect might seem a bit far-fetched, it can actually be applied to our everyday lives. This impact may be in our lives, in someone else's life, or in the lives of people we aren't even connected to. Think of it this way: Small things turn into big things...It's the little things that make up the big things. By focusing on doing small daily efforts, in time, they will mount up to big changes. Don't ever underestimate the power of your actions. With one small gesture, you can change a person's life. The takeaway: If each of us does our part as advocates, survivors, overcomers, and as individuals, we may not change the world overnight, but our voices create a powerful butterfly effect that matters.
This textbook provides the first foundational introduction to the practice of analysing multimodality, covering the full breadth of media and situations in which multimodality needs to be a concern. Readers learn via use cases how to approach any multimodal situation and to derive their own specifically tailored sets of methods for conducting and evaluating analyses. Extensive references and critical discussion of existing approaches from many disciplines and in each of the multimodal domains addressed are provided. The authors adopt a problem-oriented perspective throughout, showing how an appropriate foundation for understanding multimodality as a phenomenon can be used to derive strong methodological guidance for analysis as well as supporting the adoption and combination of appropriate theoretical tools. Theoretical positions found in the literature are consequently always related back to the purposes of analysis rather than being promoted as valuable in their own right. By these means the book establishes the necessary theoretical foundations to engage productively with today’s increasingly complex combinations of multimodal artefacts and performances of all kinds.
E-business integration is a vision we have developed over a long period of time. As we have worked in business practice for many years prior to and in parallel with our academic research, we have always thought of such - tegration not only as an intellectual challenge but also as a real business tool. Consequently, when we started our project on Ontologies-based R- onciliation for Business Integration (ORBI) in 2004, not only pure science but also business objectives were at the center of our research. We were very happy to be able to form a project consortium that consisted not only of renowned researchers but also of experienced business practitioners from a range of companies. Each played a specific role – as user, provider or co-developer of the application components that are based on the me- ods we have developed. So may this book find its way not only to the desks of researchers and students, but also into the offices and minds of business practitioners worldwide who are dealing with the challenge of integrating their business processes, applications and information. This book is, in the most general sense, about understanding each other – that is, what we do and think. Needless to say, within the project itself, and its environment, we had many opportunities to apply this underlying philosophy. In the end, the results prove it was worth the effort.
