El Salvador - A War by Proxy

El Salvador - A War by Proxy

Keith Preston

The Central American nation of El Salvador was consumed by a bloody civil war between 1980 and 1992. The principal players in the conflict were the right-wing government of El Salvador, a coalition of rebel groups operating under the umbrella of the Farabundo Marti National Liberation Front, and the Reagan administration in the United States. The U.S. supported the Salvadoran military at an estimated cost of $6 billion dollars. During the course of the war, in a nation whose population numbered slightly more than five million, an estimated 75,000 people were killed; 18,000 disappeared, and one million people were left homeless. Investigating the background and history of the war Keith Preston provides not only an in-depth analysis of the conflict, but fills in many of the knowledge gaps that have existed surrounding the relationship between the US administration and the Salvadorian army. His research clearly demolishes the US argument that the FMLN were motivated by a commitment to hard-line Marxist-Leninist ideology, but rather by a newer kind of radicalism with its roots in the progressive wing of the Catholic Church of Latin America.Without the role of the Catholic Church, the Salvadoran resistance would never have developed in the form that it did, and perhaps it would not have developed to nearly as significant a level as it did at all.

In the summer of 2008, Andrei Kaplan moves from New York to Moscow to look after his ageing grandmother, a woman who survived the dark days of communism and witnessed Russia’s violent capitalist transformation. She welcomes Andrei into her home, even if she can’t always remember who he is. Andrei learns to navigate Putin’s Moscow, still the city of his birth, but with more expensive coffee. He looks after his elderly – but surprisingly sharp! – grandmother, finds a place to play hockey, a café to send emails, and eventually some friends, including a beautiful young activist named Yulia. Capturing with a miniaturist’s brush the unfolding demands of family, fortune, personal ambition, ideology, and desire, A Terrible Country is a compelling novel about ageing, radical politics, Russia at a crossroads, and the difficulty – or impossibility – of actually changing one’s life.

Few inside accounts have been published in Australia written by those who were active in that part of the Cold War which took place inside Australia's social institutions, especially the trade union movement. Most published memoirs have been written by those on the extreme left of the political spectrum or by defectors from the anti-communist movement. In his account, Keith Harvey, an anti-communist student and trade union movement activist describes his involvement in the struggle carried out, he says, by often unsung people with the highest motives.
A Voice Crying in the Wilderness: The Incredible Life & Ministry of John the Baptist
Most Bible readers have some general ideas about John the Baptist, his unusual clothing and diet, and that his ministry immediately preceded the ministry of Jesus. But a closer look reveals not only a unique lifestyle and ministry, but a rather mysterious figure compelled to live a largely lonely life, and one that towards its end was harrowing. A Voice Crying in the Wilderness takes us beyond those familiar words about him at the outset of each gospel account into a closer look at what made him tick, revealing more about the man and how he brilliantly filled one of the most crucial roles in the Bible story. This book follows The Simon Peter Principles as another insightful look into a fascinating and inspiring Bible character.

Words of Wisdom

At the heart of the Republican MAGA right is the rhetoric about immigration. In this historical and spiritual examination of immigration, historian Keith Pruitt looks at the history of immigration in the United States. But Pruitt goes further by examining the spiritual teachings in Jewish/Christian scriptures regarding our relationship with others especially those the Bible refers to as "strangers" in the land. The obvious implication is that those who seem the most vocal about getting rid of foreign immigrants, illegal aliens, or however one wishes to designate these humans who have come to our shores, are also those who seem more bent on enforcing their view of religion. Yet, as Pruitt points out, these anti immigrant rants are in clear opposition to plain biblical teachings. In the third chapter, the author then uses a series of historic quotes to show a representation of beliefs on immigrant throughout American history. This book coupled with his prior two books on Christian Nationalism and American Political Parties offer a trifecta in American history studies.

Like the group of players who stunned the world by upsetting the mighty Soviet Union in the iconic “Miracle Game” at the Winter Olympics in Lake Placid in 1980, few gave the Team USA women much of a chance to beat the Canadians in the inaugural women’s tournament in Nagano, Japan in 1998. After all, Canada’s women had dominated their game for decades, winning every major international tournament until then. But when the Gold Medal game had ended, Team USA was standing atop of the podium after a shocking upset that ignited what many consider to be the greatest rivalry in all of sports.

In this book, I've tried to condense a number of thoughts and insights that I've been struggling with as a minister in a society that is both Post-Modern and 'Post-Christian'. Serving an historic denomination has turned out to be a great vehicle for innovation as it allowed me to offer the church a broader way of doing theology that I believe makes sense in our contemporary life. After all, our Calvinistic roots provide a clarion call for theological innovation. The cry, Reformed and always being reformed has been the motto for Reformed Christians for over five centuries. I've used the late Ben Lacy Rose's very good contemporary view of T.U.L.I.P as a baseline for the series. His insights are priceless. Brian McLaren's brief mention of a kinder, gentler Calvinism in his book A Generous Orthodoxy serves as the outline for much of the content of the five newer ways to view T.U.L.I.P. He makes it easy to build on his brief musings. In fact, McLaren offers a challenge to denominations to take up his suggestions to update their theology for the 21st Century. I guess this is what I'm trying to do in this book.My hope is that these brief chapters will catch your attention and pique your curiosity. By revisiting the old acrostic T.U.L.I.P. in our day, you and the church will appreciate not only our historic viewpoints but also be challenged to consider our faith and beliefs in new ways for a new day. Theology really does matter for believers. I hope this brief work can help the larger church find this to be so. Rev. Dr. Keith Curran, 2021
