"Lars Gustafsson has an uncompromising vision of the utter complexity of modern life."--The New York Times Book ReviewGustafsson's A Time in Xanadu, his third translated collection of poems, manages to be personal and quirky while also deeply philosophical. --ForeWordFew poets today can so easily without overwriting bridge 'centuries and minutes, ' to use the title of one of Gustafson's poems.--Harvard ReviewFrom the moment it begins, Lars Gustafsson's A Time in Xanadu throws open questions of geography and narration. Where are we? How do we know? Throughout the book, the speaker's voice proves a powerful one as it muses on questions of travel, war, philosophy, and thought itself. The language of Gustafsson's poems is sparse, and his lines are compact and taut. But beneath the neat surfaces of these poems lie surreal and sometimes eerie landscapes: a castle in Cremona, Italy; "those white, strangely meaningless / days between Christmas and New Year;" a library which is "a kind of subway." There are strains of Ezra Pound in this work, and allusions to great continental thinkers--Goethe, Fichte, Nietzsche, Einstein--drift across it. Yet tracing those allusions to their source is neither desirable nor, ultimately, possible. For in the wake of Gustafsson's highly evocative poems, we can only wonder just how much time we have spent, or lost, in Xanadu, or where we went from there. The Khan leaves Xanadu and milkfrom white goats onlyis hurled high into the air on his departureto nourish the spirits of the air.So says Marco Polo, our Venetian witness.Lars Gustafsson is a renowned Swedish poet, novelist, and philosopher who has written dozens of books. He taught philosophy for many years at the University of Texas, Austin. He now lives in Sweden.

Developing Winning Brand Strategies

Developing Winning Brand Strategies

Lars Finskud

Every manager knows that robust strategy plays a crucial role in any enterprise. Yet for all the publications that have been written on the subject, three things remain true. Strategy is complex, many companies still get it wrong and driving organic growth in maturing markets is very challenging.Existing tools and approaches have been valuable, but increasingly tend to be insufficient for identifying growth in today’s mature and competitive markets. It is only through developing detailed understanding, with a fairly high level of granularity, of what actually drives brand performance and how these drivers can be influenced that incremental growth opportunities become clear.Developing Winning Brand Strategies introduces at a high level the actual relationships between branding, strategy, and corporate performance. It provides a fresh perspective on, and approach for, developing robust customer-focused strategy and describes the important role of the brand in competing successfully for stakeholder choice.Consumer choice does not materialize spontaneously. To win, companies need to ascertain how consumers choose and churn between competing brands, what drives their brands’ selection and how to target effectively in order to recruit new consumers whilst retaining existing ones. Brands play a pivotal role in this process: they are the vehicles, or focal points, that businesses use in competing for choice. The proposition, qualities, image, and values that businesses embed in their brands are the basis for winning customer loyalty. However, to compete for choice isn’t easy. Today’s rapidly changing world of industry deregulation, growing competitive intensity, newly empowered consumers, and multiple stakeholders means that management must make decisions about how to recruit and retain stakeholders under conditions that are complex and dynamic. Despite this, companies frequently develop strategy on the basis of intuition rather than solid fact. This is where Developing Winning Brand Strategies adds significant value providing a holistic, in-depth understanding of the business dynamics and consumers’ selection criteria enabling management to make informed strategic decisions.

This thoroughly revised second edition provides an updated treatment of numerical linear algebra techniques for solving problems in data mining and pattern recognition. Adopting an application-oriented approach, the author introduces matrix theory and decompositions, describes how modern matrix methods can be applied in real life scenarios, and provides a set of tools that students can modify for a particular application.Building on material from the first edition, the author discusses basic graph concepts and their matrix counterparts. He introduces the graph Laplacian and properties of its eigenvectors needed in spectral partitioning and describes spectral graph partitioning applied to social networks and text classification. Examples are included to help readers visualize the results. This new edition also presents matrix-based methods that underlie many of the algorithms used for big data. The book provides a solid foundation to further explore related topics and presents applications such as classification of handwritten digits, text mining, text summarization, PageRank computations related to the Google search engine, and facial recognition. Exercises and computer assignments are available on a Web page that supplements the book.Matrix Methods in Data Mining and Pattern Recognition, Second Edition is primarily for undergraduate students who have previously taken an introductory scientific computing/numerical analysis course and graduate students in data mining and pattern recognition areas who need an introduction to linear algebra techniques.
How Carriers Fought

How Carriers Fought

In November 1921 the first purpose-built carrier was launched by the Japanese, followed a year later by the British launch of the Hermes. After WWI, battlecruisers were readily converted into aircraft carriers, with questions on how to handle the aircraft on the flight deck beginning to be raised and techniques of how to attack enemy ships beginning to develop. How Carriers Fought focuses on the HOW, not the what, when, or the by whom. It begins by examining the tools and the building blocks of carrier operations, looking at what life was really like in the cockpit for the pilots alongside the technicalities of navigation and communication. A world of tactical dehydration, amphetamine pills, and illegal smoking is explored, as well as the measures they put in place to reduce their risk of death on being hit. This book goes on to examine the major carrier battles of WWII, from the Battle of the Coral Sea to the Battle of Leyte Gulf, with a focus on how the tools of carrier operations were employed during these battles. At the Battle of the Midway the debate of concentration vs. dispersion became relevant, as the Japanese decided to divide their forces while the Americans concentrated theirs. How Carriers Fought questions these tactics, exploring which worked best in theory and in practice. How were searches made, how many planes were used, what was the range and coverage of the search, and how many hits were scored and losses suffered? The final section of the book looks at how carrier operations changed in major ways during the course of the war, as better technology and a better understanding of this new type of warfare allowed for quick advances in how operations were carried out. For example, the balance between fighter and bomber planes changed dramatically, with the US beginning the war with 20% fighters and ending it with 80% fighters. This book gives a comprehensive insight into carrier operations in WWII, with a focus on the Pacific War between the US Navy and the Imperial Japanese Navy. A series of appendices expands on topics such as radar, landing on a carrier, radios and even carrier pigeons.

In November 1921 the first purpose-built aircraft carrier was launched by the Japanese, followed a year later by the launch of the British Hermes. The conversion of battlecruisers into aircraft carriers after World War I required the consideration of issues including handling aircraft on the flight deck and the techniques of attacking enemy ships, and the evolution of carrier operations was ongoing when World War II broke out. With a focus on the conflict in the Pacific between the U.S. Navy and the imperial Japanese fleet, this title examines how aircraft carriers fought during World War II by first considering all the tools and building blocks of carrier operations, and then discussing the various battles that involved aircraft carriers to explore how carrier operations evolved during war.Every aspect of carrier operations is covered; from the technology used on the carriers and in aircraft including for navigation and communication, to what life was really like in the cockpit for the pilots. A world of tactical dehydration, amphetamine pills, and illegal smoking is explored, as well as the measures pilots implemented to reduce their risk of death in the event of being hit.The major carrier battles of the war are considered, from Coral Sea to Leyte Gulf, with a focus on how the tools of carrier operations were employed. This highly anticipated followup to the acclaimed Wittgenstein Jr. finds a young Nietzsche experiencing the excitements and the humiliations of finals season in a modern high school. When a new student transfers in from private school, his public school peers nickname him Nietzsche thanks to his mysterious charisma. Nietzsche, like his philosopher namesake, is brilliant but doomed to madness, and his new classmates feel compelled to interpret the deeper meaning behind his arrival. For one, they realize that he should be the front man of their metal band. This darkly humorous and entirely relatable novel follows its shining (and too creative for their own good) cast through the last few weeks of school, leading up to an important gig and even more important exams.

Slotted waveguide antenna arrays are used in radar, communication and remote sensing systems for high frequencies. They have linear polarization with low cross-polarization and low losses but can also be designed for dual polarizations and phase steered beams. Slotted Waveguide Array Antennas is the first comprehensive treatment of these antennas from an engineering perspective. It provides readers with a thorough foundation in applicable theories as well as hands-on instruction for practical analysis, design, manufacture and use of important types of waveguide slot arrays. It goes beyond some of the commonly discussed topics and ventures into areas that include higher order mode coupling and edge effects; performance optimisation in terms of bandwidth and pattern performance and manufacturing tolerances. With specific examples of waveguide array designs, accompanied by detailed illustrations and antenna characteristics, the book is a must-have reference for engineers involved in antenna design, development and applications.
