Success of a product is determined by the market. I am therefore very pleased that the ?rst two editions of this book have been sold out, and that the publisher has asked me to work on a third, revised and expanded edition. - viously, thereisstilldemandfor“MatterandMethodsatLowTemperatures”, even almost 15 years after publication of the ?rst edition. Before working on this revision, I had written to more than 20 expert colleagues to ask for their recommendations for revisions. Besides details, the essence of their response was the following (1) Essentially, leave as it is; (2) AddmoreinformationonpropertiesofmaterialsatT> 1K;(3)Addinfor- tion on suppliers of low-temperature equipment. Besides following the latter tworecommendations,Ihave,ofcourse,takenintoaccountallrelevantnew- formation and new developments that have become available since the second edition was written more than 10 years ago, in 1995. I have found this inf- mation in particular in the journals “Journal of Low Temperature Physics”, “Review of Scienti?c Instruments”, and “Cryogenics”, as well as in the P- ceedingsoftheInternationalConferencesonLowTemperaturePhysics, which took place in Prague (1996), Helsinki (1999), Hiroshima (2002), and Orlando, FL (2005), as well as of the International Symposium on Quantum Fluids and Solids, which took place in Ithaca, NY (1995), Paris (1997), Amherst, MA (1998), Minneapolis, MN (2000), Konstanz (2001), Albuquerque, NM (2003), and Trento (2004); the latter proceedings have also been published as issues of the Journal of Low Temperature Physics.
This book provides algorithms and ideas for computationalists. Subjects treated include low-level algorithms, bit wizardry, combinatorial generation, fast transforms like the Fourier transform, and fast arithmetic for both real numbers and finite fields. Various optimization techniques are described and the actual performance of many given implementations is examined. The focus is on material that does not usually appear in textbooks on algorithms. The implementations are done in C++ and the GP language, written for POSIX-compliant platforms such as the Linux and BSD operating systems.
This book, written for a wide readership with some background in the natural sciences, addresses the very old problem of the mind-brain-relationship. The authors, all well-known scientists, approach the subject in different stages. The first part addresses some general principles based on physics, computer science, and theoretical biology. The two following parts deal with the problem at different organizational levels, from the microscopic to the macroscopic. The fourth part addresses the subjective level founded on the findings of psychologists and neurophysiologists.
In this volume seven leading theoreticians and experimenters review the origin of the asymmetry of matter and antimatter in the Big Bang, solar neutrinos, the physics of enormous densities and temperatures in stars and of immense magnetic fields around collapsed stars, strong electric fields in heavy ion collisions, and the extreme conditions in quark-gluon plasmas. The articles address nuclear and particle physicists, especially graduate students, but also astrophysicists and cosmologists, since they have to deal with events under the extreme physical conditions discussed here.
This volume is published in honor of Friedrich Hund's 100th birthday. It is a modern review on matter at high densities and pressures in astrophysics from Hund's early contribution to present-day ideas. The relation between the equation of state and the structure of compact cosmic objects is discussed, and two main contributions deal with the equation of state of baryonic matter at nuclear densities and with the numerical solution of the general relativistic field equations for non-rotating and rapidly rotating neutron stars. In a final chapter the present state of asteroseismology is presented as a tool to explore the interior of cosmic objects by analyzing the observed free oscillations of the Earth, the Sun, and white dwarf stars.
