Promotion and Tenure

Promotion and Tenure

Articulates salient problems of tenure-track faculty, especially women and faculty of color. Offers a new paradigm to delineate ways in which the academic community can help socialize younger faculty, and honor differences more readily.Research on the organizational culture in higher education affirms that congruent cultures are better than fragmented ones, and that managing culture is an oxymoron. Such analyses often lead to the assumptions that unity of purpose is essential and leadership is impossible. This book reframes rather than suppresses these notions, and by respecting the differences, builds a commonality between them.Using data on faculty socialization in academe, the authors consider how the work of cultural leadership becomes interpretation and facilitation rather than management. Through a series of interviews using experimental forms of ethnographic presentation, Tierney and Bensimon articulate salient problems of tenure-track faculty, especially women and faculty of color, and address the issue of individuals voluntarily leaving the tenure-track. They offer a new paradigm to delineate ways in which the academic community can help socialize younger faculty, and honor differences more readily.

A compelling account of an expedition undertaken by wildlife expert J. Stokley Ligon in 1913, when he traveled alone on horseback through New Mexico. The materials and insights found in this volume also reveal aspects of Ligon's family history, his early interest in wildlife, and the development of the wilderness skills needed to undertake such a survey.

Designed to be used alongside Leadership: Theory and Practice 10th Edition, this casebook provides relevant, substantive, and contemporary case studies on leadership issues in Higher Education and K-12 Education. Each of the 32 case studies include critical thinking questions that encourage students to apply leadership theory and concepts to real-life situations. Engaging, practical, and relevant, Leadership Case Studies in Education is the perfect companion for educational leadership courses. New cases explore social identity leadership and team leadership theories, with examples including the challenges of teaching virtually during the COVID-19 pandemic, the formation of a union of college adjunct professors, and a high school′s challenge in changing their offensive school mascot symbol.

Over the past 2 decades, Frames have become tools in designing signal processing and communication systems where redundancy is a requirement. To name just a few, spreading sequences for code-division multiple access, over-complete representations for multiple-description source coding, space-time codes, sensing matrices for compressed sensing, and more recently, codes for unreliable distributed computation. In this book the authors describe an information-theoretic frame subset. These subframes arise in setups involving erasures (communication), random user activity (multiple access), or sparsity (signal processing), in addition to channel or quantization noise. Working at the intersection of information theory and neighboring disciplines, the authors provide a comprehensive survey for this new development that can drastically improve the performance of codes used in such systems. The authors begin with an introduction to the underlying mathematical theory, including performance measures, frame theory and random matrix theory. They then proceed with two very important highlights that connect frame theory with random matrix theory and demonstrate the possibility that Equiangular Tight Frames provide superior performance over other classes. This book provides a concise and in-depth starting point for students, researchers and practitioners working on a variety of communication and signal processing problems.

This book traces the practices of migration control and its contestation in the European migration regime in times of intense politicization. The collaboratively written work brings together the perspectives of state agents, NGOs, migrants with precarious legal status, and their support networks, collected through multi-sited fieldwork in eight European states: Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy, Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and Switzerland. The book provides knowledge of how European migration law is implemented, used, and challenged by different actors, and of how it lends and constrains power over migrants’ journeys and prospects. An ethnography of law in action, the book contributes to socio-legal scholarship on migration control at the margins of the state. “This book is a major achievement. A remarkable and insightful study that through close analysis of the practices of migration control in 8 European countries (Austria, Denmark, Germany, Italy,Latvia, Lithuania, Sweden and Switzerland) provides powerful new insight into the power of the state at its margins and over those that are marginalised.” - Andrew Geddes, Director, Migration Policy Centre, European University Institute “Migrants Before the Law provides a much-needed account of the dizzying legal labyrinth that migrants navigate as they seek to survive in Europe. Based on multi-sited ethnography in detention centres, migration offices, police stations, and non-governmental organizations as well as on interviews with key government actors, advocates, and migrants themselves, this book explores the systems of control and forms of migrant precarity that operate along Europe’s internal borders, in multiple national and transnational contexts. Readers will come away with a deepened understanding of the perverse workings of power, the ways that the uncertainty and unpredictability of law foster both despair and hope, the degree to whichthe immigration “crisis” is both manufactured and experienced as real, and the ingenuity of migrants themselves in the face of Kafkaesque state practices.” - Susan Bibler Coutin, Professor of Criminology, Law and Society and Anthropology, University of California, Irvine, USA “Migrants Before the Law is an excellent exposition of the dispersed sites of the law and the hinges and junctions through which this apparatus is actualized in the lives of migrants facing deportation, contesting their status as illegal migrants or seeking to regularize their precarious position. Written with great sensitivity and an eye to minute details this book is also an achievement in furthering the method of collaborative ethnography and new ways of staging comparisons.” - Veena Das, Krieger-Eisenhower Professor of Anthropology, Johns Hopkins University, USA

Williams, Kenneth Paprock and Barbara Covington provide clear commentary on the basic issues surrounding distance learning. Distance Learning answers some of the key questions at the heart of new educational technologies: What are the options available to institutions considering the addition of distance learning to their programs? What is the most practical way to integrate new technologies with existing equipment? For teachers, what is the best way to minimize the loss of content and foster a positive learning environment without face-to-face contact? An ideal introduction to the world of new educational technologies, the guide is filled with case studies and built on an intuitive set of "How do I . . . ?" questions. Providing a strong foundation for teachers who need to teach from a distance, it will be an invaluable sourcebook for teachers who need to know more about open and distance learning across any academic discipline.

Whereas chemical engineering has traditionally focused on the design of chemical processes to produce commodity chemicals, there has been increasing attention in the discipline on the engineering of high-performance chemical products. Chemical product design principles are now being incorporated into university curricula to ensure new chemical engineers can help meet industry demands. Bridging the gap between teaching and practice, Introduction to Chemical Product Design provides a comprehensive overview of chemical product design, explains the role of chemical engineers in different stages of chemical product design, and covers stepwise approaches used to design different types of chemical products. • Includes chemical product design steps with examples and case studies. • Features mini projects to illustrate the connection between product design stages. • Focuses on the most common types of problems that engineers encounter in their career. • Offers solved examples and exercise problems on manufacturing steps. • Considers the role of quality assurance and the tools to quantify environmental, health, and safety aspects. Aimed at undergraduate and graduate level students in chemical engineering, this textbook provides readers with practical know-how to apply chemical product design principles to develop and manufacture high-value products. It will also be of interest to practicing chemical engineers seeking to expand their knowledge of chemical product design. The book features a Solutions Manual for adopting professors.
