Psycho-Cybernetics

Psycho-Cybernetics

Cybernetics (loosely translated from the Greek): "a helmsman who steers his ship to port." Psycho-Cybernetics is a term coined by Dr. Maxwell Maltz, which means, "steering your mind to a productive, useful goal so you can reach the greatest port in the world, peace of mind." Since its first publication in 1960, Maltz's landmark bestseller has inspired and enhanced the lives of more than 30 million readers. In this updated edition, with a new introduction and editorial commentary by Matt Furey, president of the Psycho-Cybernetics Foundation, the original text has been annotated and amplified to make Maltz's message even more relevant for the contemporary reader. "Before the mind can work efficiently, we must develop our perception of the outcomes we expect to reach. Maxwell Maltz calls this Psycho-Cybernetics; when the mind has a defined target it can focus and direct and refocus and redirect until it reaches its intended goal." --Tony Robbins (from Unlimited Power) Maltz was the first researcher and author to explain how the self-image (a term he popularized) has complete control over an individual's ability to achieve (or fail to achieve) any goal. And he developed techniques for improving and managing self-image--visualization, mental rehearsal, relaxation--which have informed and inspired countless motivational gurus, sports psychologists, and self-help practitioners for more than fifty years. The teachings of Psycho-Cybernetics are timeless because they are based on solid science and provide a prescription for thinking and acting that lead to quantifiable results.

A Student's Guide to Analysis of Variance

A Student's Guide to Analysis of Variance

In the investigation of human behaviour, statistical techniques are employed widely in the social sciences. Whilst introductory statistics courses cover essential techniques, the complexities of behaviour demand that more flexible and comprehensive methods are also employed. Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) has become one of the most common of these and it is therefore essential for both student and researcher to have a thorough understanding of it.A Student's Guide to Analysis of Variance covers a range of statistical techniques associated with ANOVA, including single and multiple factor designs, various follow-up procedures such as post-hoc tests, and how to make sense of interactions. Suggestions on the best use of techniques and advice on how to avoid the pitfalls are included, along with guidelines on the writing of formal reports.Introductory level topics such as standard deviation, standard error and t-tests are revised, making this book an invaluable aid to all students for whom ANOVA is a compulsory topic. It will also serve as a useful refresher for the more advanced student and practising researcher.
The Scottish Banks

The Scottish Banks

Banking in Scotland has a long and distinguished history - to this day Scotland is served by its own banks which form a distinct regional group within the wider British banking system. Yet, until this volume, there had been no book which gives a full account of modern Scottish banking, analyzing its position within the British banking structure. With this comprehensive study, this gap in the literature of modern British financial institutions has now been filled. Here, all aspects of Scottish banking are covered. The author describes the structure of the system and the pattern of branch banking, examining the position and practices of Scottish banks in regard to deposits and asset holding. He sets out the modern position of Scottish bank note issues and analyzes their significance both for the banks themselves and for the British system as a whole. The book gives valuable appraisal of the performance of the Scottish banks as lenders to the private business sector. The author is not concerned with Scottish banks simply as institutions domestic to Scotland. He traces their relationship with the City of London and fully analyzes their role within the operations of wider British Monetary policy. This fascinating study, first published in 1965, concludes with a consideration of the future prospects of the Scottish banks within British banking as a whole.

How would the legendary figures in the Bible advise us today? We're running the race of our lives and it's a long one. We need encouragement along the way--a cheering grandstand or a personal trainer or two. John Maxwell reminds us that even in a modern world, the greatest inspiration is still found within the pages of the Old Testament. In RUNNING WITH THE GIANTS, Maxwell brings those great personalities to life. David would remind us how to overcome adversity. Noah would tell us not to fear doing the impossible. And Rebekah would urge us to give and serve generously. Each of these and the many other biblical figures Maxwell examines can motivate believers toward their personal best in the marathon of life.

How does a person judge what is ethical? Sometimes it's clear. In the past couple of years, ethical lapses in corporate America have been well-documented. However, it's not always easy to see where the line is in life. What's the standard? Can it work in all situations? John C. Maxwell thinks it can. In this book he reveals how people can live with integrity by using the Golden Rule as their standard - regardless of religion, culture or circumstances. Along the way he delves into the desires of the human heart, reveals the five most common pitfalls that throw people off the ethical track and teaches how to develop the Midas touch when it comes to personal integrity.

Constitutional Process

Constitutional Process

This is the first comprehensive analysis of how the collective nature of Supreme Court decision making affects the transformation of the justices' preferences into constitutional doctrine. Analyzing the Supreme Court from the perspective of social choice theory, Maxwell L. Stearns offers new insights into Supreme Court decision making that have profound implications for understanding the outcomes in a number of cases and the resulting doctrinal development within constitutional law which traditional analyses have proven ill-equipped to explain. The book models several important process-based Supreme Court rules, including outcome voting, the narrowest-grounds rule, stare decisis, and justiciability, with a particular emphasis on standing. These doctrines have each had a significant impact upon the evolution of modern constitutional law, including but not limited to the following areas: affirmative action, school desegregation, racial gerrymandering, obscenity, and abortion. Each model is presented in nontechnical language with several concrete illustrations drawn from recent Supreme Court case law.The book offers a new understanding of two apparently paradoxical situations: first, cases in which there are separate majorities on specific issues in the case that suggest, logically, that there should be a majority for the dissenting result; and second, cases in which discrete minorities--as opposed to the apparent majority--control the identification and resolution of dispositive case issues. In addition, the book sheds new light on why the Court employs stare decisis, even though the doctrine grounds the evolution of legal doctrine on the order in which cases are presented and decided, and on how the modern standing doctrine ameliorates the incentives for interest groups to time the litigation of cases in a way that will exert a disproportionate influence over the direction of constitutional doctrine. This book will appeal to scholars of the Supreme Court or judicial decision-making. It should also be of interest to students of social choice and of law and economics who have not previously considered the Supreme Court or constitutional law as fertile ground for their disciplines.Maxwell L. Stearns is Professor of Law, George Mason University School of Law.

The public rely upon media representations to help interpret and make sense of the many complexities relating to climate science and governance. Media representations of climate issues – from news to entertainment – are powerful and important links between people's everyday realities and experiences, and the ways in which they are discussed by scientists, policymakers and public actors. A dynamic mix of influences – from internal workings of mass media such as journalistic norms, to external political, economic, cultural and social factors – shape what becomes a climate 'story'. Providing a bridge between academic considerations and real world developments, this book helps students, academic researchers and interested members of the public make sense of media reporting on climate change as it explores 'who speaks for climate' and what effects this may have on the spectrum of possible responses to contemporary climate challenges.
