A gripping biography that brings together the most recent research to shed provocative new light on the life of Saint Patrick Saint Patrick was, by his own admission, a controversial figure. Convicted in a trial by his elders in Britain and hounded by rumors that he settled in Ireland for financial gain, the man who was to become Ireland's patron saint battled against great odds before succeeding as a missionary. Saint Patrick Retold draws on recent research to offer a fresh assessment of Patrick's travails and achievements. This is the first biography in nearly fifty years to explore Patrick's career against the background of historical events in late antique Britain and Ireland. Roy Flechner examines the likelihood that Patrick, like his father before him, might have absconded from a career as an imperial official responsible for taxation, preferring instead to migrate to Ireland with his family's slaves, who were his source of wealth. Flechner leaves no stone unturned as he takes readers on a riveting journey through Romanized Britain and late Iron Age Ireland, and he considers how best to interpret the ambiguous literary and archaeological evidence from this period of great political and economic instability, a period that brought ruin for some and opportunity for others. Rather than a dismantling of Patrick's reputation, or an argument against his sainthood, Flechner's biography raises crucial questions about self-image and the making of a reputation. From boyhood deeds to the challenges of a missionary enterprise, Saint Patrick Retold steps beyond established narratives to reassess a notable figure's life and legacy.

Extremely scholarly and contains many important studies... impossible to do justice to the depth of scholarship which is on display here. BRITANNIA Anyone working on Britain and Ireland in the fifth century should pay close attention. MEDIEVAL ARCHAEOLOGY A fascinating work, which sheds light on a number of dark corners. EARLY MEDIEVAL EUROPE St Patrick's place in Irishhistory is celebrated, but is also the subject of intense controversy - even as to his death. Although the 1500th anniversary of that event was originally celebrated in 1961, there is every reason to think the death date of 461 unsustainable. This collection of essays commemorates a different date, 17 March 493, and takes stock of other difficult issues which require reassesment. These include Patrick's own account of his career, his impassioned apologiapro uita sua, and the later Irish sources which may not reveal much about Patrick but possibly contain material about Palladius, sent from Rome in AD 431 as first bishop for Irish Christians: the invention of two Patricks seems tobelong, at the latest, to the 8th century, and may be a reflex of a 7th-century conflation of the careers of Palladius and Patrick. The continuing mediaeval development of the legend and cult of St Patrick and a wide variety of other associated historical and literary-historical issues are also explored. DAVID DUMVILLE is Professor of Palaeography and Cultural History, University of Cambridge, and Fellow of Girton College.
St Patrick's Park Place Liverpool. A Parish History 1821-2021
St Patrick's is the oldest of Liverpool's early post-Reformation Catholic churches to remain in use. Erected in the third decade of the nineteenth century, close to the city's expanding docks, and designed to seat 1,800 people, it has a fortress-like construction, which took six years to complete, the foundations and burial pits being cut into the solid sandstone bedrock. In 1816 a group of far-sighted laymen took out an unusual 5,000 year lease on the site. From the time of its opening in 1827, St. Patrick's has always been a hub of local community activity in the Toxteth area of Liverpool. The burial place of three of the ten 'martyr priests' who died during the 1847 typhus epidemic, the church in which Adolf Hitler's nephew was baptised, the parish of Jack Traynor, miraculously cured at Lourdes in 1923, the survivor of street riots, massive bombing between 1940 and 1942 and the earthquake of 1974, with close links to the Australian Archdiocese of Adelaide, proud to have had footballers such as Robbie Fowler and Ian Callaghan attend its school, and currently the subject of detailed investigations by the University of Liverpool Department of Archaeology, St Patrick's has a remarkable and unfolding story to tell as it approaches the start of its third century.

One of 101 titles in the St. Joseph Picture Book Series, this book by popular author Rev. Jude Winkler, OFM. Conv. provides children with an explanation of who Saint Patrick was. Saint Patrick is the patron saint of Ireland, and his story is full of faith, courage, and adventure He was born in Britain around the year 385, but when he was just 16 years old, something scary happened--he was captured by pirates and taken to Ireland as a slave He had to work very hard as a shepherd, looking after sheep. Even though he was scared and far from home, Patrick prayed to God every day, asking for strength. After six long years, Patrick escaped and returned home to his family. But he didn't forget about the people of Ireland. He believed God was calling him to go back and share the message of Jesus with them. So, Patrick became a priest and later a bishop, and he returned to Ireland to spread the Good News of Christianity. Saint Patrick traveled all over Ireland, teaching people about God's love. One of the ways he explained the Holy Trinity--the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit--was by using a shamrock, a small plant with three leaves. The three leaves helped people understand that God is three persons in one. Thanks to St. Patrick, many people in Ireland became Christians, and he is still remembered for his strong faith and his bravery. Today, we celebrate St. Patrick's Day every March 17th, remembering his life and the good work he did. St. Patrick teaches us to trust in God, even when life is hard, and to share God's love with others, just like he did with the people of Ireland. Specific topics covered in this title include: Pagan Kings and Chieftains Ruled Ireland Patrick Taken into Slavery Prayers of a Shepherd The Journey to Freedom The Call to Ireland Patrick is Sent to Ireland Patrick Begins His Preaching Many People are Converted Patrick's Sufferings Patrick's Piety Patrick Works Miracles Patrick's Humility Patrick's Trust in God Patrick's Success Patrick's Death Prayer of the Church to St. Patrick

He confronted Druid chiefs, baptized 120,000, used the three-leaf clover to teach the Trinity, and founded 300 churches, which in the next century sent missionaries back into Europe You will be fascinated by Saint Patrick-The Real Story of Life & Times from Tragedy to Triumph
