Hailed for his decisive victory over a Royal Navy squadron on Lake Erie in September 1813 and best known for his after-action report proclamation ‘We have met the enemy and they are ours’, Oliver Hazard Perry was one the early U.S. Navy s most famous heroes. In this modern, scholarly reassessment of the man and his career, Professor David Skaggs emphasizes Perry s place in naval history as an embodiment of the code of honour, an exemplar of combat courage, and a symbol of patriotism to his fellow officers and the American public. It is the first biography of Perry to be published in more than a quarter of a century and the first to offer an even-handed analysis of his career. After completing a thorough examination of primary sources, Skaggs traces Perry s development from a midshipman to commodore where he personified the best in seamanship, calmness in times of stress, and diplomatic skills. But this work is not a hagiographic treatment, for it offers a candid analysis of Perry s character flaws, particularly his short temper and his sometimes ineffective command and control procedures during the battle of Lake Erie. Skaggs also explains how Perry’s short but dramatic naval career epitomized the emerging naval professionalism of the young republic, and he demonstrates how the ‘Hero of Lake Erie’ fits into the most recent scholarship concerning the role of post-revolutionary generation in the development of American national identity. Finally, Skaggs explores in greater detail than anyone before the controversy over the conduct of his Lake Erie second, Jesse Duncan Elliott, that raged on for over a quarter century after Perry s death in 1819.

Until now Perry County has not been included on the literary map of Mississippi. My debut collection of poems changes that atlas. These poems, some historical, other's lyrics, record the topography of my memory of this county where I grew up filled with stern pine trees, fields dense with corn, snakes and blood, cheating husbands and wives, tobacco and hate chewing men, chinaberry trees, catfish, cows pasturing in trees, and mud pies cooked in an old wood stove, and Black souls that are still with me. My poems emerge from a feminine vision found in Southern letters from Eudora Welty, Alice Walker, Flannery O'Connor and Jesmyn Ward. As the trees in the Pine Belt speak with voices you do not always want to hear, these poems give voice to the mercies and miseries. The trees refuse to be silent them. Nor do these poems.
Church Ladies Quilts: East Perry County Series Book 5 of 5
For generations, ladies have gathered at churches to quilt. In Church Ladies' Quilts, the fifth and final novel in the East Perry County series, Kate Meyr s love for quilts convinces her to join the quilters at Concordia Lutheran Church in Borna. The ritual of their practices amuses Kate as she listens to their diverse personalities. It doesn't take long, after Kate joins them, for a mystery of a missing quilt to surface. The Pastor, who is dearly admired by the ladies, tries to keep the story quiet for the church s reputation. In the meantime, Kate s friendship with Clark is turned upside down and a new relationship appears with a red Jeep. Kate s research on Josephine is enhanced by discovering who has been putting yellow roses on her grave.
Alliance and Landscape on Perry Mesa in the Fourteenth Century
About forty miles north of Phoenix, Arizona, Perry Mesa is part of Agua Fria National Monument today, but during the late thirteenth and early fourteenth centuries, this windswept arid landscape became the site of numerous farming communities. This book explores why people moved to Perry Mesa at that time. Analyses of Perry Mesa contrast with those of the iconic large-scale migrations in the prehistoric Southwest such as the Kayenta diaspora and the gathering of the clans at Hopi. Unlike those long-distance movements into occupied regions, the Perry Mesa case is one of relatively localised aggregation on a largely vacant landscape. But, as was discovered with the iconic migrations, ethnogenesis (the creation of new identities) took hold on Perry Mesa, making it an extremely interesting counterpoint to the better-known migrations of the period.Contributors to this volume examine the migration process under two explanatory frameworks: alliance and landscape. These frameworks are used to explore competing hypotheses, positing either a rapid colonization associated with an alliance organised for warfare at a regional scale, or a more protracted migration as this landscape became comparatively more attractive for migrating farmers in the late thirteenth century. As the first major publication on the archaeology of Perry Mesa, this volume contributes to theoretical perspectives on migration and ethnogenesis, the study of warfare in the prehistoric Southwest, the study of intensive agricultural practices in a marginal environment, and the cultural history of a little studied and largely unknown portion of the ancient Southwest. It not only documents the migration but also the ensuing birth of a new ethnic identity that arose from the coalescence of diverse groups atop Perry Mesa.

The first complete biography of Matthew Calbraith Perry to appear in well over thirty years, this balanced assessment of the commodore's long and varied military career deals with both his strengths and weaknesses. Best remembered for leading a naval and diplomatic expedition to Japan in 1853 and 1854, Perry succeeded where others before him had failed and ended Japan's isolation from the West by signing a treaty that established formal diplomatic relations between the United States and Japan. Today Perry remains a respected figure in Japan as well as the United States, and the upcoming sesquicentennial of his expedition makes the publication of this book especially timely. The noted naval historian John Schroeder draws on recent scholarship as well as archival sources to examine every phase of Perry's career, from his service under Commodore John Rodgers in the War of 1812 to command of the Africa Squadron, the Gulf Squadron in the Mexican War, and the East India Squadron. He describes Perry's efforts to modernize and improve the efficiency of the Navy, distinguishing himself not only as a sailor and diplomat but as a naval reformer who advocated technological innovations and better education and training for officers and sailors alike. The author establishes how Perry's views on American expansion in the Pacific foreshadowed the era in which the U.S. Navy would be instrumental in forging an overseas colonial empire. Written for general readers with an interest in nineteenth-century American history, this interpretive biography will also appeal to those with a specialized interest in U.S. naval history.
Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry: The Life and Legacy of Early 19th Century America's Most Famous Naval Officer

Great Britain, as the leader of several coalitions of conservative European countries trying to isolate and snuff out the revolutionary spirit and the ambitions of Napoleon, had been at war with France almost continuously since 1792. Under President Thomas Jefferson (1801-1809) and James Madison (1809-1817), the United States tried to steer a course that would keep it from being drawn into the European war and defend its neutrality on the high seas. However, both Britain and France wanted to hurt the other side economically by keeping goods out of their enemy's hands. Thus, they did not faithfully respect the rights of neutral nations. The British government in 1807 had issued the "Orders in Council," which enforced a naval blockade against France, and with a shortage of seamen to man the Royal Navy, Britain also felt justified in stopping and sometimes firing on ships flying the American flag in the name of apprehending escaped British sailors. The other main cause of war was distress on the Northwestern frontier, where the British in Canada were supporting Indian resistance to American settlement. So-called "War Hawks" from that region in Congress pushed for a declaration of war. Some hoped that a war would not only stop Indian depredations but evict the British from Canada and lead to completion of some unfinished business from the American Revolution, namely Canada joining the U.S. Americans had few things to celebrate during the War of 1812, and fighting on the frontier against the British and their native allies didn't go any better than the conflict did in other theaters, but one of the only major victories the Americans won came at the Battle of Lake Erie in September 1813. That action made Oliver Hazard Perry, a veteran of the Barbary Wars and commander of the USS Lawrence, a legend whose name has endured for over 200 years. Perry was so instrumental in the victory that British historian C.S. Forester noted "it was as fortunate for the Americans that the Lawrence still possessed a boat that would float, as it was that Perry was not hit." As one of the biggest naval battles of the war, the results meant that America maintained control of Lake Erie, an important location from which they could recover Detroit and be better positioned to confront the British and Shawnee leader Tecumseh's confederacy. For his part, Perry would forever be remembered as the "Hero of Lake Erie," even as he and compatriot Captain Jesse Elliot would feud over their respective actions during the battle for the rest of Perry's life.Perry received a Congressional Gold Medal and the Thanks of Congress for compelling the surrender of the entire British squadron, the first time that had ever happened, but he wouldn't have much time to enjoy it. He fought in the Second Barbary War in 1815 but died of yellow fever while on a mission in Venezuela in 1819. Despite being just 34 at the time of his death, he was one of the most famous military heroes in the young nation's history, and he has been commemorated with countless monuments across America ever since.Commodore Oliver Hazard Perry: The Life and Legacy of Early 19th Century America's Most Famous Naval Officer chronicles how he became one of America's most memorable military heroes.
