Golf in Columbus at Wyandot Country Club: A Lost Donald Ross Classic

The Donald Ross-designed golf course at the Elks and Wyandot Country Clubs was celebrated as one of Ohio's best from its ballyhooed beginnings in 1923 until its closing in 1952. During its too-short history, the course and the two clubs associated with it overcame many obstacles, including a lack of money and resources during the Great Depression and lack of materials and manpower during World War II. Home to the 1931 Ohio Amateur and the 1948 Columbus Invitational, its membership roll included three-time major champion Denny Shute. Author Bill Case covers the birdies, bogeys and pars in this long-overdue chronicle of a lost jewel from golf's golden age.
The G. Ross Roy Collection of Robert Burns

The G. Ross Roy Collection of Robert Burns

This is a guide to the most comprehensive collection of ""Burns and Burnsiana outside of the United Kingdom"". Established in 1989, the ""G. Ross Roy Collection of Robert Burns and Burnsiana at the University of South Carolina's Thomas Cooper Library"" is one of the world's foremost collections dedicated to the study of Scotland's greatest poet. G. Ross Roy, an internationally renowned Burns scholar, inherited the origins of this collection from his grandfather in 1958. Since that time, the dynamic collection has increased fivefold - and continues to expand through new acquisitions. This illustrated catalogue of the collection's expansive holdings is being published in 2009 on the occasion of ""Burns""' 250th birthday as a guide to the current collection for researchers and collectors alike. Of the approximately six thousand items described in the catalogue, the largest sections are works by Burns and items of Burnsiana. These include not only separate editions of the poet's major works but also editions with distinctive bindings and variants. Among the notable highlights is one of only two known first-edition copies of ""The Merry Muses of Caledonia"" (1799) and the only one with a complete title page. The collection also includes sixteen of the twenty-one known variants of the 1827 reprint edition of that work. Also detailed are landmark collections of Burns, including the exceptionally rare ""Kilmarnock"" edition (1786), the 1787 ""Edinburgh"" edition with more than thirty annotations in Burns' hand, the 1787 London edition, and James Currie's 1800 edition. The collection includes as well ""Burns""' annotated copy of John Moore's novel ""Zeluco"" and a copy of ""The World"" with more than sixty ascriptions and comments in ""Burns""' hand. The catalogued Burnsiana features almost every book-length study of the poet as well as numerous pamphlets and books with significant sections about Burns. Also described in the catalogue, among the collection's manuscripts, is the song ""Lesley Bailie - A Scots Ballad"" (1792), the only known copy in ""Burns""' hand. And the most unique artifacts of realia seen here are ""Burns""' porridge bowl and horn spoon, inherited by Roy from his grandfather as part of the original collection. ""The G. Ross Roy Collection of Robert Burns"" includes an introduction by G. Ross Roy on the history of the collection. In text and images, the catalogue documents a monumental research collection that serves as an open invitation for further investigations into the life, works, and legacy of Scotland's bard.

Highlights a plucky role model for the ages. -Kirkus Reviews After reading about Amelia Earhart in her friend's scrapbook, twelve-year-old Ginny Ross decides to become a pilot. It's 1930 and luckily, the airstrip in her hometown of Harbour Grace, Newfoundland, is a popular launching point for intrepid aviators setting out on transatlantic flights. But how will Ginny's dream take flight when her mother--and society in general--so fiercely believes a woman's place is in the home? At the height of the Great Depression, the Ross family certainly can't spare any money for flying lessons, and Ginny will need a mentor if she is ever going to make it out of Harbour Grace. With the support of her beloved Papa, kind Uncle Harry, and resourceful Aunt Rose, Ginny takes matters into her own hands. When Amelia Earhart herself shows up in Harbour Grace for her first solo flight across the Atlantic Ocean, Ginny notices the townspeoples' looks of shock and disgust are slowly turning to looks of admiration and respect. Maybe they will soon understand Ginny's dream, and maybe Amelia Earhart is the woman to help convince them. Based on the real girlhood of author Heather Stemp's Aunt Ginny, Amelia and Me is a big-hearted story of determination, grit, and adventure. Readers will love the archival photos of Amelia Earhart and her plane, along with the interesting historical details skillfully weaved throughout the book.

It's 1936, and against all odds--but not without a few stumbles--Ginny Ross has made it to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. (Otherwise known as the academic home of her friend and mentor, Amelia Earhart.) For Ginny, this is the next step toward her dream of becoming a pilot, but it's harder than she expected: as the only girl in her mechanical engineering program, she constantly has to prove she deserves to be there. Ginny is determined not to let the jeers of her classmates and the opinions of some backwards-thinking professors hold her back, but she is a world away from her home in Harbour Grace, Newfoundland. When Amelia takes off in 1937 to fly around the globe, Ginny can't shake a feeling of foreboding. Aviation is still relatively new and communication between air and ground is patchy at best. Then Amelia disappears without a trace, and Ginny must figure out if she has what it takes to forge ahead without her mentor. With the threat of the Second World War looming large, Ginny will need every bit of salty east coast grit she can muster. Featuring historical photos of Amelia's time at Purdue University (1935-37), this STEM-friendly novel will appeal to anyone who has suffered from imposter syndrome and has had to prove their worth--to others and themselves.

The Archival Exhibition – A Decade of Research at the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery, 2006–2016
Architecture is a field organized by documents produced within distinct historical, mediatic, and disciplinary registers. Whether in the mode of drawing, design, fabrication, computation, photography, or video, architectural documents are defined by different discursive and institutional exigencies. But architectural archives are hardly stable or uniform. Rather, archives are active processes and systems of coordination, woven into architecture's media, their histories, and their communicative effects. Over the last decade, the Arthur Ross Architecture Gallery at Columbia University's Graduate School of Architecture, Planning and Preservation has conducted a sustained experiment in archival exhibitions. Fueled by the recent historicization and theorization of exhibition practices, the gallery has offered a critical alternative to the conventional role of architectural school galleries and exhibitions at major museums and architecture associations. Through a commitment to researching under-examined projects from the postwar period, the Ross Gallery has forged an identity based on the uncovering and display of a wide range of documents that expand and test the contours of architectural practice. This book collects text and documents from fourteen exhibitions that span the past ten years of the Ross Gallery. These exhibitions are accompanied by commentaries by a group of architects, artists, historians, theorists, and curators that examine each exhibition, survey the work of the gallery, and foreground the shifting status of architectural exhibitions more broadly.
