Society and Circulation
The idea of an 'eternal India', based on stable and unchanging villages, has been in disarray for at least two decades. However, having demolished this myth, historians have been rather less able to construct an alternative vision. This volume sets out to do just that, using the idea of 'circulation' in relation to South Asia in the colonial period. It comprises a set of complementary essays which deal with merchant circulation, pilgrimages, cartography, policing, labour mobility and the movement of itinerant groups from colonial administrators to wandering bards, demonstrating that the South Asia of this period was made and remade by changing patterns and the logic of circulation. Once this perspective is integrated into the analysis of society, new and disturbing questions emerge on issues such as culture, identity and ethnogenesis, which are normally treated in the context of fixed and stable societies. The essays in this volume - written by some of the leading authorities in South Asian history - break new ground in suggesting the outlines of a different framework for historical analysis.

There is an unbridgeable controversy between the functionalist sociologist who anchors his theories on society and the group, and the existentialist who bathes his thoughts on the individual. Durkheim and Parsons, as well as many contemporary American sociologists, are adjustment based in the sense that all those individuals who rock the boat even if they are creative innovators would be labelled deviant or mad. The existentialists, from Kierkegaard to Buber, regard the individual as the focus of life; they see philosophy and society as at best a curbing control-structure and at worst coercing, stigmatizing and ostracizing. The present volume treads in the giant footsteps of Albert Camus who saw the absurd as the conflictual encounter between the individual and society. Society and the Absurd attempts to overcome this deep sociological controversy by investigating absurdity through the prism of an interdisciplinary theory of personality.

Jan Culik's book analyses the value system constructed by Czech feature films produced since the fall of communism in 1989. It provides an overview of some three hundred Czech feature films made during this period. Over fourteen chapters, the book shows how Czech film makers have dealt with the legacy of communism and other traumatic past experiences, and how they have borne witness to recent political and social developments in the Czech Republic. In Culik's view, Czech feature film constructs an image of society which is still heavily influenced by the so-called "normalisation" regime of the 1970s and 1980s, which was created in Czechoslovakia after the 1968 Soviet invasion. Czech feature films bear witness to a society which suffers from fairly weak social and political structures. Many Czech films highlight the subordinate position of women in Czech society and project an image of impractical, inefficient, and aggressive men. In discussing the films, Culik uses the methodology of Cultural Studies, in which art is seen primarily as a specific kind of social communication within a certain cultural and historical context.

"Political correctness" involves much more than a restriction of speech. It represents a broad cultural transformation, a shift in the way people understand things and organize their lives; a change in the way meaning is made. The problem addressed in this book is that, for reasons the author explores, some ways of making "meaning" support the creation and maintenance of organization, while others do not. Organizations are cultural products and rely upon psychological roots that go very deep. The basic premise of this book is that organizations are made up of the rules, common understandings, and obligations that "the father" represents, and which are given meaning in the oedipal dynamic. In anti-oedipal psychology, however, they are seen as locuses of deprivation and structures of oppression. Anti-oedipal meaning, then, is geared toward the destruction of organization.

Providing interpretations and drawing critically from classical and modern social theory, post-structuralism, and psychoanalytic theory, this original study offers an alternative way of thinking about the social and the individual. It offers critical analyses of, among others, Marx, Giddens, Bourdieu, Derrida, Laclau and Mouffe, Castoriadis, Freud and modern psychoanalytic theorists, and considers their roles in advancing our present-day conceptualization of the social and the self. In theorizing that behaviour is both socially determined and autonomous, it avoids the impasses of either individualist or structuralist approaches.

Society as Service/Service as Society

Society as Service/Service as Society

When thinking about the term 'service' as the raison d' tre for the book, the initial rationale assumed a simplistic definition of it as offering facility nodes within a network of places in the space of a settlement. However, initially recognising and defining the term 'service' offerings as just nodes in places was found to be only the surface fa ade of what service provision really implies within societal maintenance and sustainability. Hence, the service influence became far deeper leading to the conclusion that Service defines Society/Society defines Service. From these two succinct phrases, the curious and the imaginative are offered access to a perspective that engages with how society is, and performs, within its surface and hidden spaces that drive the societal process, and the connection of what 'service' has to do with it. Alice Springs and its remote character has created a place of 'pure' serviceability. 'Pure' in the sense that it has no traditional primary production to fall back on to provide a sense of why it exists, as other settlements seem to possess explaining their initial and ongoing presence. Its existence is a question of service, which drives the local economy. These geographical factors provide a place rich in 'serviceable' research material, a valuable tool to gauge society. Bourdieuan theories assist with service and society association.

I'm the prince of death.A son of carnage born of wicked deeds and sin-filled nightmares.Nobody understood me. Until her.My Spider. The wild girl I claimed from a sea of violent men. But others want her too...The enemies who lurk within my walls seek to steal her from my grasp. They're my captives, but maybe they're the answer to my greatest fear too. Because the Grim Reaper shadows every move I make, and he's always watching her.Perhaps I need a ring of warriors to surround my little psycho and protect her from death's claws.Because now she's stolen my black heart, I can't fail her like I've failed before.
