Public Matters

Public Matters

William A. Galston

Rowman Littlefield Publishers
2005
sidottu
After preparing to lead a quiet life as a teacher and scholar of political theory, William Galston has spent the past quarter century crossing the boundaries between academia and public life, including a two-year stint as Deputy Assistant for Domestic Policy under President Clinton. Reflecting these boundary-crossings, Public Matters contains a selection of Galston's essays on politics, policy, and religion. Each is viewed through the prisms of history, theory, and ethical concerns. The essays on politics tell the story of Galston's efforts to help redirect the Democratic Party so that it speaks more clearly to the concerns of 21st century Americans. The essays in the policy section reflect the range of issues with which Galston has grappled as a political activist and public official. Finally, the essays on religion try to come to grips with the challenges that religion, taken seriously (as it should be) poses for the governance of constitutional democracies.

No Free Lunch

No Free Lunch

William A. Dembski

Rowman Littlefield Publishers

Darwin's greatest accomplishment was to show how life might be explained as the result of natural selection. But does Darwin's theory mean that life was unintended? William A. Dembski argues that it does not. In this book Dembski extends his theory of intelligent design. Building on his earlier work in The Design Inference (Cambridge, 1998), he defends that life must be the product of intelligent design. Critics of Dembski's work have argued that evolutionary algorithms show that life can be explained apart from intelligence. But by employing powerful recent results from the No Free Lunch Theory, Dembski addresses and decisively refutes such claims. As the leading proponent of intelligent design, Dembski reveals a designer capable of originating the complexity and specificity found throughout the cosmos. Scientists and theologians alike will find this book of interest as it brings the question of creation firmly into the realm of scientific debate.
Bullseye!

Bullseye!

William A. Schiemann; John H. Lingle

The Free Press
2005
pokkari
At last, in this book, the great paradox of measurement is resolved. According to the authors' original -- and revealing -- research companies that manage by measurement outperform less disciplined competitors by an average three-year return on investment of 80 percent versus an average ROI of 45 percent. Yet few companies have put in place a disciplined approach for measuring the key nonfinancial, strategic performance areas that are so crucial to a firm's success.Bullseye! treats measurement as a key senior-management business issue. The authors explore the role of measurement in adding clarity and specificity to an organization's strategy, and in driving efforts to translate strategy into operational initiatives and business results.Organizational change and measurement experts William Schiemann and John Lingle have written the first book to provide a complete detailed blueprint for implementing a strategic measurement system. To resolve the measurement paradox, they have created as the centerpiece of Bullseye! a detailed case study that describes a four-phase process that will successfully transform any company into a measurement-managed organization. The four phases of this process are: defining a strategic business model, designing measures to support the model cascading the model and measures throughout the organization, and embedding the measures into the leadership processes of the organization. In eminently readable prose, the authors confront head-on the powerful forces that conspire to prevent a company from gaining the full value from its measurement system. In the process, Schiemann and Lingle have developed an integrative framework that covers all the major measurement areas: markets and customers, finance, people, operations, the environment, and suppliers. In fact, the authors go Beyond other published accounts of measurement systems by providing strategic tools to manage customer, community, environmental, and regulatory stakeholders along with suppliers, and adaptability -- the level at which a company learns and innovates. Focus and speed, they argue, are the essential competitive qualities. Following the guidelines recommended in this book, executives with responsibility for setting and implementing strategy should be able to make significant improvements in three months and major changes within a year. Bullseye! is must reading for all general managers at the corporate, division, and business-unit levels.
Pioneering Moral Education

Pioneering Moral Education

William A. Gatherer

Edinburgh University Press
2004
sidottu
This book is a biography of a leader of the campaign for moral education which had been conducted for several decades in Britain and in the USA. The campaign has culminated in the establishment of many programmes of 'education for citizenship', 'values education', ethics education', 'character education' and 'education for global citizenship' -- in effect, the establishment of moral education in schools throughout the world. But the book is also a history of the campaign in the UK since the 1960s, when Victor Cook, a millionaire engineer and businessman in Aberdeen, began to devote his remaining thirty years of life, and all his wealth, to persuading the educational establishment to give priority to this central area of the work of schools. Faced with indifference and even mockery, Cook and the small but growing band of professional educationists and philosophers recruited to the cause set up studies of the subject and its problems, commissioned research and development projects, and sponsored conferences and experimental teaching programmes. They also encouraged policy makers and politicians to take seriously the proposition that moral education, conducted along with or in addition to cognate subjects such as religious education and social studies, can and should be introduced as an important function of educational organisations. Set in the context of recent educational developments, this narrative, and the accompanying expositions of theories and practices, provides new insights into a complex but important subject, and a comprehensive account of the development of moral education and its role in the world of today.

Being as Communion

Being as Communion

William A. Dembski

Ashgate Publishing Limited
2014
sidottu
For a thing to be real, it must be able to communicate with other things. If this is so, then the problem of being receives a straightforward resolution: to be is to be in communion. So the fundamental science, indeed the science that needs to underwrite all other sciences, is a theory of communication. Within such a theory of communication the proper object of study becomes not isolated particles but the information that passes between entities. In Being as Communion philosopher and mathematician William Dembski provides a non-technical overview of his work on information. Dembski attempts to make good on the promise of John Wheeler, Paul Davies, and others that information is poised to replace matter as the primary stuff of reality. With profound implications for theology and metaphysics, Being as Communion develops a relational ontology that is at once congenial to science and open to teleology in nature. All those interested in the intersections of theology, philosophy and science should read this book.

Crossfire Education

Crossfire Education

William A. Jordan

University Press of America
1996
sidottu
This book discusses public education reform in the United States. The author focuses on the relationship between education and a dynamic culture. He proposes three metaphors which reveal the cultural breaks in the educational system. The metaphors are: mind as muscle, mind as machine, and mind as a technological system. Jordan also provides a matrix in order to analyze education's relation to culture and societal changes. Through his probing discussion, the author poses questions designed to make the reader think intuitively. He presents solutions, but claims that 'real solutions' must come from the people in the community. This work is a look at educational theory that calls for a revolution in our system. Jordan's enlightening work furnishes a fresh and positive look at what we can do about education, culture, and society.
Work, Status, and Self-Esteem

Work, Status, and Self-Esteem

William A. Faunce

University Press of America
2003
nidottu
The book presents a theory explaining variations in the extent to which work affects self-esteem. The conventional wisdom is that work necessarily influences self-esteem, but the research evidence presented in the text indicates that this is not the case. There is, in fact, considerable variation in the extent of this relationship. A systematic theory relating attributes of the self and characteristics of status assignment systems to the self-investment process is presented.

In Through Our Eyes, William Hunter and some of the children he fostered share their experiences within these unique social welfare phenomena. The author took in children who suffered horrific abuse from their birth parents as well as during their journey through foster care. Hunter describes his personal struggle to salvage what humanity was left to these children and advocate against the immense bureaucracy of the state welfare and mental health systems. After a dozen years, it all came crashing down around him. The stress caught up with him and took a toll on his emotional and physical health. The cases of these children touch the human heart and invoke anger against the worst segment of our society. Few people know the suffering these children endure after the sensationalism of their abuse fades to the back page. Their struggle to survive in the system remains heart wrenching.
Introduction to Quantitative Analysis of Linguistic Survey Data

Introduction to Quantitative Analysis of Linguistic Survey Data

William A. Kretzschmar; Edgar W. Schneider

SAGE Publications Inc
1997
nidottu
Dialectology--the study of variation in language rather than an invariant, homogenous grammar--lends itself quite naturally to computer assistance, both for the entry and maintenance of a database for quantitative analysis. This book is an introduction to the quantitative analysis of linguistic survey data featuring the Linguistic Atlas of the Middle and South Atlantic States (LAMSAS). Serious quantification and large-scale application of statistics demand the ability to handle large amounts of data elicited in a broad survey with the efficiency of automation. Introduction to Quantitative Analysis of Linguistic Survey Data provides a detailed account of how to adapt LAMSAS to the needs of computerization, the mechanics involved in computerizing LAMSAS, how to analyze the data in the system, statistical testing, and more. Professionals and practitioners in linguistics will be able to analyze the frequency of variants more accurately using the methods detailed in this volume--which in turn will give them a more realistic view of a particular language culture.
