A.H. Savage Landor recounts his travel experiences across Tibet and Nepal. The book opens with the author stating why he chose to embark on?such?an?expedition?and?how?he?went?about?recruiting?his?team.The work is dotted with incidents and challenges that Landor had encountered and thus, this travelogue makes for an interesting and amusing read, as he has been quite candid in his expressions and descriptions. Also, he makes no effort to hide his own inadequacies, fears, and worries. In addition to narrating his journey, he has also described the local population, their physical features and mentality, culinary habits, customs, games, the villages, flora and fauna, lamas and monasteries, and even dogs. We read of altitude sickness, avalanches, hostilities, and hindrances that he faced from the political entities, and administration,?as?well?as?the?local?populace.Landor's style is easy, engaging, and casual, and his work at times borders between a travelogue and a novel, as it also contains dialogues. This book is well-illustrated with numerous paintings and sketches, all done by the author himself, of portraits of ordinary Nepalese men and women, lamas, and beautiful landscapes of glaciers, the author's camp, Tibetan?temples,?Tibetan?goats,?Tibetan?dogs,?Nui?Glacier, etc.
Author A.H. Bingley gives a concise study of the Rajputs in Hand Book on Rajputs, covering various aspects relating to them, so that the reader gets an overview of the Rajputs. He begins with the origins of the Rajputs, briefly touching on ancient Rajput kingdoms, foundation of the Lunar and Solar races, invasions of Muslims, Greeks, the Mughals, raising of Imperial troops, role played by the Rajputs in the Mutiny and provides many other details as well. Bingley devotes the remaining chapters to their classification; festivals, customs and religion; general characteristics; and Rajput recruitments. Under classification, Bingley has listed 78 clans, covering their geographical distribution, history, religion followed and clans they can intermarry with. The chapter on social and religious matters, including their customs pertaining to birth, death, marriage, and other ceremonies like child naming ceremony, and the like. The festivals have been presented in a tabular format, which also includes a brief description of the festivals listed.
My interest in the history of the Struve family is long-standing but lay dormant until 1972, when I found myself organizing a symposium of the International Astronomical Union in memory of the second Otto Struve. To satisfy my own curiosity, I investigated the precise relationships of the famous astronomers in the family and published an account of them, based mainly on secondary sources. The exercise made me a ware that there was no biography in English of the first and probably still the greatest astronomer in the clan - Friedrich Georg Wilhelm Struve. Wilhelm's son, the first Otto, wrote an account (in German) of his father's life, intended primarily for family and close friends and --though printed-- not generally available. Through the kindness of a family member I have a copy from which I have been able to work. The Soviet historian of science, Z. K. Sokolovskaya, wrote a biography in Russian, in 1964, to mark the centenary of Wilhelm's death. This had a limited edition, and my efforts to obtain a copy failed. Neither work has, in its entirety, been translated into English, although Michael Meo of Oakland, California, and Kevin Krisciunas of Hilo, Hawaii, have kindly made available to me their unpublished translations of some sections of the latter. In the of a complete copy, however, when I decided to attempt an English absence language biography, I thought it best to do so independently of Sokolovskaya's.
