As Arlene Goldberg grew up in post-World War II New York, she couldn't have imagined one day becoming known as a pioneer and history maker credited with changing same-sex marriage laws in Florida. Young Arlene was a typical girl. She had a loving relationship with her family, did fine in school, dated boys, and enjoyed all the milestones of youth. Then she met Carol and fell in love. That's when destiny stepped in and began to shape the future. In the years that followed, Arlene loved Carol with a ferocity and devotion many people only dream about. And that love drove them both into hiding and into the proverbial closet, where they lived in secret for decades. No marriage license could have made their bond more solid or enduring-and yet without that piece of paper, they were denied basic spousal rights.Through tragic illness and terrible loss, the love of Arlene and her wife Carol would go on to shape history, free many to marry those they love, and make our heroine a beloved and revered pioneer in the LGBTQ+ community.About the AuthorArlene Goldberg is a leader and pioneer in the LGBTQ+ community, and the recipient of Equality Florida's 2014 Voice for Equality Award. She was one of the plaintiffs in the groundbreaking ACLU class-action lawsuit related to same-sex marriage laws in Florida. History was made when she and her wife, Carol, became the first same-sex couple to have their New York marriage officially and legally recognized by the State of Florida. Arlene cofounded Visuality in 2011 in Southwest Florida, and Southwest Florida Pride, Inc. created the Goldberg Award in her honor, to "recognize outstanding individuals that have contributed to the cultural, social and economic fabric of the LGBTQ+ Community in Southwest Florida."

1.What is God?2.Where were we before we were born?3.What happens after we die?4.Why do bad things happen?Alcohol recovery books are filled with specific ideas of God. Some come from religious traditions that define faith in God in a specific way. Others encourage atheism as the best path to recovery. This book takes a different approach. In Four Questions: A Recovering Person's Search for God, the author asks recovering alcoholics and Al-Anons how they answer tough spiritual questions. What do you believe in? Is there life after death? What is God's name? Why do bad things happen to good people, and for that matter, why do good things happen to bad people? The questions are universal, but the answers come from people who have struggled with alcohol addiction in themselves or a loved one. Many struggling people arrive at the doors of Alcoholics Anonymous or Al-Anon only to be put off by the word "god" in the 12 steps. This book gives the perspective of atheists, agnostics, Christians, Jews, and others who live in recovery whether they identify as religious or not. Four Questions: A Recovering Person's Search for God is intended for alcoholics, Al-Anons, and members of the support community. It is a perfect companion to the Alcoholics Anonymous Big Book, Daily Reflections, and other literature from AA and Al-Anon.

Born and raised in Alva, Oklahoma, Arlene Thies, in Home in Ethiopia an Oklahoma Family Story journeys through her extraordinary experiences that placed her, and family, half-way around the world to Africa-Ethiopia, Tanzania, and Uganda. In the early 1960s, Arlene, a young mother of three children, and her husband, Zeke, an agronomist, accepted an Oklahoma State University (then called A&M)/government assignment to train Ethiopian farmers. That decision began the discovery of dramatic cultural contrast. Arlene portrays the trip preparation that started in Bozeman, Montana, where her husband was employed at Montana State College-flights to Washington D.C., Rome, Athens, and arrival in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. She describes confrontation with the land, language, daily living, native customs that were so different, sometimes shocking, then the values she was raised with in rural, Northwest Oklahoma, and her encounters with the Emperor's family. Now, 86 years old, Arlene appreciates her experience in Ethiopia that enriched her as a human being and where she made lifelong friends. Arlene tells her story in intimate narration and many photographs. She now lives in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.

My Confessions... At the age of 25, I realized not only was I far from the person I thought I'd be, but also that I no longer had an appreciation for life and its blessings. "Numb" is a simple way of describing it, but my situation was far more severe and intense. Four of us had left home that evening, but only three of us made it back on that frightful night. One minute we were leaving the party with me driving, the next minute I crashed and she was dying in my hands. A stranger had accompanied the four of us in the back of a stranger's F-150 van. I remember he told me to pray. I prayed over a 100 times and I couldn't understand she was not bleeding nor did she have any major bruises but yet still she was fading away. I kept trying to give my own version of CPR, and I remember stopping to call the names of people I knew she loved. I called her name first, no response. I called my brother's name, still nothing, and finally I said Chaz (her son's name) and she took her last heavy deep breath. I knew she answered and I also knew she was gone. Despite the prayers, the optimism and the faith she was gone. She died in my hands with Chaz's Cars Cartoon rag in her hand. A few years ago, I watched a show starring Julia Roberts called 'Eat, Pray, Love'. What I didn't know, at the time, was that I would end up duplicating aspects of the movie in my everyday life. This book will speak to my life experiences, the lessons I have learned, the betrayals and disappointments I have experienced. At the end of this book, I hope you find inspiration through the concept of "UBUNTU" as caring for others is an expression of what it means to be fully human. Life is short, but it doesn't have to be all bad, sad or depressing. Avoid going around creating storms only to turn around crying when you have to deal with the rain. Live a good life, refrain from intentionally hurting others and set positive examples. Be sure to find your purpose while you are here on earth. This universe is bigger than you and me, and your job while you're here is to make an impact. I believe, "genuine success comes through the service of humanity"-P. Matthews. Even though "One man can change the world", I believe teamwork ultimately conquers it. Kind & Sincere Regards, Petreen R. Matthews...(A True Story)

From the bestselling author of Annapurna: A Woman's Place, comes a revealing memoir about the mountaineering feats that made Arlene Blum one of America's most famous female climbers and her tumultuous journey to adulthood that inspired her to become the risk-taker she is today. Arlene Blum is a legendary trailblazer by any measure. Defying the climbing establishment of the 1970s, she led the first teams of women on successful ascents of Mt. McKinley and Annapurna, and was the first American woman to attempt Mt. Everest. In her long, adventurous career, she has played a leading role in more than twenty expeditions and forged a place for women in the perilous arena of high-altitude mountaineering. Breaking Trail is the story of Blum's journey from her overprotected youth in Chicago to the tops of some of the highest peaks on Earth. Chronicling a life of extraordinary personal and professional achievement, Blum's intimate and inspiring memoir explores how her childhood fueled her need to climb--and how, in turn, her climbing liberated her from her childhood. Each chapter in Breaking Trail begins with a poignant vignette from Blum's early life. Using these as starting points, she traces her evolution as a climber, from a hilariously incompetent beginner to an aspiring mountaineer to a successful, confident, and world-renowned expedition leader. Along the way, she takes us to some of the most extreme and exquisite places on the planet, sharing the exhilaration, toil, and danger of climbing high. Blum also relates the story of her scientific career, which, like her mountaineering, challenged gender stereotypes and was filled with singular accomplishments, including the banning of two cancer-causing chemicals and the initiation of an important area of biophysical research. Writing with remarkable candor and introspection, Blum recounts her triumphs and tragedies, and provides a probing look at what drove her to endure extreme physical discomfort--and even to risk her life--attempting high, remote summits around the world. In her story, she shares intimate insights into how and why climbers persevere under the harshest circumstances, cope with the deaths of their comrades, and balance their desire for adventure with their personal lives. Complemented with breathtaking personal photos and detailed maps, Breaking Trail is a deeply moving account of how one woman overcame adversity to become one of the world's most famous climbers, and a testament to the power of taking risks and pursuing dreams.
