Ben-Hur: A Tale of the Christ is a novel by Lew Wallace published by Harper and Brothers on November 12, 1880, and considered "the most influential Christian book of the nineteenth century". It became a best-selling American novel, surpassing Harriet Beecher Stowe's Uncle Tom's Cabin (1852) in sales. The book also inspired other novels with biblical settings and was adapted for the stage and motion picture productions. Ben-Hur remained at the top of the US all-time bestseller list until the publication of Margaret Mitchell's Gone with the Wind (1936). The 1959 MGM film adaptation of Ben-Hur is considered one of the greatest films ever made and was seen by tens of millions, going on to win a record 11 Academy Awards in 1960, after which the book's sales increased and it surpassed Gone with the Wind. It was blessed by Pope Leo XIII, the first novel ever to receive such praise. The success of the novel and its stage and film adaptations also helped it to become a popular cultural icon that was used to promote numerous commercial products. The story recounts the adventures of Judah Ben-Hur, a Jewish prince from Jerusalem, who is enslaved by the Romans at the beginning of the first century and becomes a charioteer and a Christian. Running in parallel with Judah's narrative is the unfolding story of Jesus, from the same region and around the same age. The novel reflects themes of betrayal, conviction, and redemption, with a revenge plot that leads to a story of love and compassion.

Ben Baker's Festive Double Issue: Forty Years of Christmas TV
Christmas invariably means excess - be it through food, drink or television. Whether it's Morecambe and Wise recreating Singin' In The Rain, the Trotters dressed as the Dynamic Duo or EastEnders running over a baby for light relief, TV is our very pal throughout the entire turkey and tinsel period. This book pays tribute to forty years of festive programmes with over 250 viewed and reviewed in mini-essays by Ben Baker.Alongside the classics there's the likes of Kid Creole's strange post-watershed musical about racism, Roland Rat going to Switzerland, Skeletor learning the true meaning of Christmas, Doctor Who's original spin-off, The Bee Gees teaming up with Frankie Howerd for a medieval comedy and Feargal Sharkey having a nightmare on a Concorde whilst the Krankies watch on in helpless bemusement high above the Telecom Tower. Plus much much more."Ben Baker's Festive Double Issue takes us back to the simpler times before the boom of multi-channel TV, covering the forty year period from 1955 to 1995 when Christmas TV was truly a shared national experience....Baker writes wittily but informatively throughout. This is a subject that he obviously knows a great deal about but what shines through is a love for the subject. Although at times he's slightly irreverent about the programmes he's covering, there's still a deep love for the subject matter." - Simon Hart, We Are Cult

What began in Palm Springs as a pandemic pastime quickly became an oceanic odyssey, lasting eighteen months and stretching from San Diego to Juneau and from Phoenix to Maui all in search of the perfect Mai Tai. Along the way we strengthened old friendships and forged new ones, we raised our glasses to sailors and pirates, and while we found what we consider to be the best Mai Tai, we tasted many more interesting tropical libations than we imagined existed. But this is not just a review book. We've included discussions of the "tiki" problem, pirate lore and Pacific mythology, a study of music, art, and architecture inspired by Oceanic culture, and a guide to nearby historical sites, bubbling volcanoes, and roadside Americana. See what pirates everywhere are growling about over their pints of grog. Captain Hook gives it a thumb-and a hook-way up This is essential reading for the tropical drink enthusiast, the erstwhile sailor, and the armchair adventurer.
