Die Arbeit deutet die zu Elias Canettis Lebzeiten erschienenen drei autobiographischen Bucher als Texte, in denen sich das erzahlende Ich wahrend der ersten 30 Lebensjahre aus einer Schulerrolle heraus in Auseinandersetzung mit Lehrerfiguren zum Dichter entwickelt. Der aus dem Nachlass edierte vierte Erinnerungsband zeigt jedoch, dass Canetti sich im Exil in England vom Schuler, der Dichter werden will, zum Meister, der seinen Schulerinnen das Schreiben lehrt, gewandelt hatte. In der Provinz des Lehrers ergrundet diese vielfaltigen Inszenierungen des Rollenspiels zwischen Schuler- und Lehrerfiguren. Unter Nutzung von bislang unveroeffentlichten Quellen zeichnet das Buch auch die enge Beziehung von Canetti zu einem seiner Zuricher Lehrer, Friedrich Witz, nach. Ausserdem werden Bezuge von Canettis Lehrerportrats zum Werk des Physiognomikers Rudolf Kassner freigelegt.
