Conspicuous in His Absence – Studies in the Song of Songs and Esther
Biblical Foundations Book Awards Runner Up and Finalist In the biblical canon, two books lack any explicit reference to the name of God: Song of Songs and Esther. God's peculiar absence in these texts is unsettling, both for theological discourse and for believers considering implications for their own lived experience. Chloe T. Sun takes on the challenges of God's absence by exploring the often overlooked theological connections between these two Old Testament books. In Conspicuous in His Absence, Sun examines and reflects on the Song of Songs and Esther using theological interpretation. She addresses three main questions: What is the nature of God as revealed in texts that don't use his name? How do we think of God when he is perceived to be absent? What should we do when God is silent or hidden? The experience of God's absence or silence is an important part of the human condition. By exploring the distinct themes and perspectives of Song of Songs and Esther, as well as how they've been received in Jewish and Christian history, Sun demonstrates how both books serve as counter texts to the depiction of God and his work in the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures. Thus both contribute to a fuller picture of who God is and what it means to know him.

If you take a fortuitous wrong turn somewhere near the New Hampshire coast, you'll stumble across this 400-square-foot home. Equal parts gypsy caravan and pirate ship, it is almost entirely built by Brandon and Chloe from old film/photography sets, thrift and junkyard finds. Since its conception, the home has garnered an incredible amount of attention online, on TV, and in countless publications, and very recently became the darling of cottage-core TikTok , amassing millions of views and thousands of followers, as well as mentions in Teen Vogue, Architectural Digest, and Business Insider. The Not So Tiny House takes readers on a deep dive through Chloe and Brandon's story of building and decorating their home. Like the house, which is sometimes compared to Howl s Moving Castle, every inch of the book is packed with innovative ideas for small space living, including foldable sections of the house used as respective his and hers wings with custom wardrobes, desks, chairs, and vanity. The bathroom has a custom composting toilet, folding sink, and vanity area. The upper ledge and main loft projects feature shelving, the ceiling lattice, and library ladder. There is also a loft guest-bed/sofa, in addition to the primary loft bed area: bed frame, linens, privacy curtains, shelving, and beside sconces. The tiny rooms are enhanced by lifestyle photos of Chloe and Brandon living in and enjoying their house and their beautiful natural surroundings. Readers travel with them on blueberry and apple picking excursions, and later pie-making; delicious meals prepared in the little kitchen; holiday decorating for Christmas, including a full-size tree. Sumptuously designed and illustrated, this book is a wildly original take on small space living.

The influence of the idealistic French architect Claude Parent (1923-2016) extends far beyond the legacy he left in iconic commercial and residential built works such as the Villa Drusch in Versailles (1963), the church of Sainte-Bernadette du Banlay in Nevers (1966), and GEM shopping centre in Sens (1970). Movement was at the heart of Parent s vision, and is nowhere more evident than in his drawings, many of which are published in this book for the first time drawings which, according to Frank Gehry, are extraordinary beautiful fantasies, full of poetry, and which Edwin Eathcote, writing for the Financial Times, described as breathtaking in their ambition they not only presage Daniel Libeskind and Zaha Hadid, they arguably surpass them. Parent s work manifests the oblique function theory he developed with Paul Virilio in 1963, that dictates that buildings should feature slopes, be wall-free where possible and have a predominance of space over surface. Featuring contributions by some of today s most renowned architects, this long-overdue publication is a must-have for students of architecture and architects alike. Including initial sketches for his best known buildings and never-before-seen drawings of unbuilt works, Claude Parent: Visionary Architect reveals the genius of a man who unquestionably changed the history of architecture.

It's the early 1990s, and in the Irish village of Crossmore, Lucy feels out of place. Despite her fierce friendships, she's always felt this way, and the conventional path of marriage and motherhood doesn't appeal to her at all. Not even with handsome and doting Martin, her closest childhood friend. Lucy begins to make sense of herself during a long hot summer, when a spark with her school friend Susannah escalates to an all-consuming infatuation, and, very quickly, to a desperate and devastating love. Fearful of rejection from her small and conservative community, Lucy begins living a double life, hiding the most honest parts of herself in stolen moments with Susannah. But with the end of school and the opportunity to leave Crossmore looming, Lucy must choose between two places, two people and two futures, each as terrifying as the other. But only one can offer her real happiness. Sunburn is an astute and tender portrayal of first love, adolescent anxiety and the realities of growing up in a small town where tradition holds people tightly in its grasp.

Everyone loves a story about people who beat the odds. But what about those who didn't? In the years she spent hoping to conceive a child with her husband, Chloé Caldwell consumed everything she could find on infertility. No matter the book or reddit forum, her experiences seemed absent amid stories of IVF and miracle babies. Bouncing between her job at a boutique selling 'life-changing pants' and the fertility clinic offering 'innovative ways to create your family', Caldwell ignored the sense that something else in her life was wrong - until she extracted a confession from her husband. In this candid and intimate memoir, Caldwell confronts the irresolution and uncertainty of those denied their deepest desire to become a mother and discovers how, even in the depths of grief, new pleasures and possibilities can be found. What begins as an account of trying to create life becomes a bold and brave journey to rebuild one's own. At once hilarious and heartbreaking, Trying reveals how, even when life blows up, sometimes it's only the beginning.

Legacy of the Sacred Harp

Sacred Harp music or shape-note singing is as old as America itself. The term sacred harp refers to the human voice. Brought to this continent by the settlers of Jamestown, this style of singing is also known as “fasola.” In Legacy of the Sacred Harp, author Chloe Webb follows the history of this musical form back four hundred years, and in the process uncovers the harrowing legacy of her Dumas family line. The journey begins in contemporary Texas with an overlooked but historically rich family heirloom, a tattered 1869 edition of The Sacred Harp songbook. Traveling across the South and sifting through undiscovered family history, Webb sets out on a personal quest to reconnect with her ancestors who composed, sang, and lived by the words of Sacred Harp music. Her research irreversibly transforms her rose-colored view of her heritage and brings endearing characters to life as the reality of the effects of slavery on Southern plantation life, the thriving tobacco industry, and the Civil War are revisited through the lens of the Dumas family. Most notably, Webb’s original research unearths the person of Ralph Freeman, freed slave and pastor of a pre-Civil War white Southern church. Wringing history from boxes of keepsakes, lively interviews, dusty archival libraries, and church records, Webb keeps Sacred Harp lyrics ringing in readers’ ears, allowing the poetry to illuminate the lessons and trials of the past. The choral shape-note music of the Sacred Harp whispers to us of the past, of the religious persecution that brought this music to our shores, and how the voices of contemporary Sacred Harp singers still ring out the unchanged lyrics across the South, the music pulling the past into our present.

Be a Girl Champion is a compilation of stories about seven young girls who faced hardships in their lives but who came out stronger and wiser. Readers of this book will take away one thing: everything that happened to these girls has happened and continues to happen to millions of others just like them, not just in Asia but around the world. Author Chloe Reynaldo wrote these stories hoping readers will realize that these unfortunate circumstances are commonplace, and that they are happening all around us, even though they go unnoticed. Reynaldo wrote them simply, to impress upon people of all ages the daunting problems these very young girls face. But these are also stories of hope-stories that show any step forward, no matter how small, can be a major improvement. One way or another, these girls strive to overcome their difficulties and to continuously grow as people. Reynaldo hopes that all will always be inspired to move past obstacles and look forward to the future-and always remember to support, bolster, and champion one another.

From fiction writer and journalist Carol Bergman comes a third engaging potpourri of very short stories, aphorisms, anecdotes, verbal snapshots, and mini-essays: NOMADS 3. In these subtle, profound and original works, each using a different narrative persona, Bergman demonstrates her experience as a phrasemaker and storyteller. Like Lydia Davis and Czeslaw Milosz, her writing is both unique and difficult to classify, yet its cumulative affect in this volume is clear. Humorous, perceptive, precise, wry, sometimes chilling, she writes about war and peace, love and disappointment, the mundane and the sublime, with deep attention and warmth.

Chloe Lizotte

In 2007, Chloe Lizotte, then a student in middle school, wrote an "Historical Thoughtleader Profile" on Elizabeth Cady Stanton, the women's suffrage leader, which she then published on a website. A few days later, she received a request from a professional women's website called Women in Technology International (WITI) which wanted to re-publish it. That was the beginning of Chloe's journey into professional publishing which, over the ensuring years, included a series of columns on still more historical "thoughtleaders" for The Concord Journal as well as music and arts reviews in her high school newspaper The Voice (which she also served as editor-in-chief) and various op-ed pieces, reviews, news reports and reflective essays in prominent journals like Teen Ink, The Real Musician, Booklore, The Pulitzer Center, CEO Refresher and Op-Ed News. The next step logically implied a book, resulting in "Fresh Ink: Published Writings," a compilation of all her published content. Each chapter in "Fresh Ink" is a previously published work specifically selected for publication by an editor. No chapter content in "Fresh Ink" has been included that does not meet that requirement. "The essays in my book reflect where I've been, what I've seen, how I've reacted and what I've concluded," Chloe explains. "They speak to my journey up to this stage in my life." Chapter topics in the book range from music reviews ("The Suburbs" and "The King of Limbs") to literary legends (Hemingway, J.D. Salinger) to political history (The 1920s youth culture, Martin Luther King) to Steve Carell's leaving "The Office" to profiles of historical eccentrics, movie reviews, a report on the 2011 summer London riots and a self-reflection titled "The Thoreau Challenge." A comment online of the website that published Chloe's essay on Martin Luther King remarked: "(Chloe is) an amazingly cogent thinker, proving that age has nothing to do with intellect, discernment, wisdom, and that all-important passion for one's subject matter -- and for truth." Another commenter confided: "I was about to give up on our youth but your wonderful writing has renewed my faith." Now a member of Yale's class of 2016, Chloe graduated from Concord-Carlisle High School in 2012 after serving as editor-in-chief of its student newspaper The Voice and music director of its radio station WIQH-FM. In addition to her column about "historical eccentrics" in the town of Concord's weekly newspaper The Concord Journal, she also won the 2011 University of Virginia Book Award. Her twice-monthly radio show on WIQH achieved the station's "Outstanding Show of the Year" award three years running. She is also an accomplished piano and guitar player, an avid snowboarder, kayaker and runner, and a talented videographer. Chloe's reporting on the London riots for the renowned Pulitzer Center happened largely due to her love of all things British, including four trips to London and a summer study program at Cambridge College (2011). She has also visited Ireland, Scotland, Wales, Montreal and Paris. She lives with her family in Concord, Massachusetts.
