Festus Claudius "Claude" McKay OJ (1890-1948) was a Jamaican-born American poet and writer famous for his central role in the Harlem Renaissance. After travelling to America to attend college, he came across W. E. B. Du Bois's "The Souls of Black Folk", which inspired in him an interest in politics. In 1914 he moved to New York City and five years later wrote his most famous work, "If We Must Die", a sonnet dealing with the spate of white-on-black race riots and lynchings that succeeded the First World War. McKay's political and literary endeavours eventually took him to Russia, where he collaborated on "The Negroes of America" (1923) and "Trial by Lynching" (1925), which explored American black-white racism from a Marxist class-conflict perspective. After coming to terms with the Authoritarianism of the Soviet Union, McKay left for Western Europe in 1923. This book contains a fantastic collection of McKay's most influential articles on race and politics, not to be missed by those with an interest in American history and global politics during the twentieth century. Contents include: "Claude Mckay by Robert Thomas Kerlin", "Socialism and the Negro", "The Capitalist Way: Lettow-Vorbeck", "A Black Man Replies", "Review of First Principles of Working Class Education", "Communists and the Local Councils of Action", "The Revolution in Currency", "The Yellow Peril and the Dockers", "How Black Sees Green and Red", etc. Other notable works by this author include: "Gingertown" (1932), "A Long Way from Home" (1937) and "My Green Hills of Jamaica" (1979). Read & Co. Books are proudly publishing this brand new collection of classic articles, now complete with an introductory biography from Robert Thomas Kerlin's "Negro Poets and their Poems" (1923).
From Eoin Colfer, author of Artemis Fowl, comes a truly compelling, empathy-building book based on real life events in illustrator Chris Judge's own life. Erin's favourite game is spotting animals in the clouds with her mum and dad - everything from foxes and polar bears to little rabbits! She calls them her 'cloud babies'. One day, Erin falls very ill. She has to spend a long time in hospital but she still manages to find comfort and joy in spying cloud babies through the windows with her new hospital friends. When Dr Bernadette tells Erin that even though there would still be some "hospital days", she can now go home, she is so excited. But being back at school is not at all what she expected. So much has changed. Erin must reconcile the comforting, safe world she has built for herself inside the hospital with the world outside that has now become unfamiliar to her. But with her Mum and Dad's love and guidance, and with the support of her school teacher and friends, Erin realizes that by sharing her world, and her cloud babies, she will find happiness in being herself once more. Sensitively told and vibrantly brought to life on the page, this is a truly powerful source of guidance, acknowledgement and, ultimately, comfort.
The sequel to the OpenBooks science fiction best seller of monsters, Gods, and aliens, unlike anything you've ever read. Well, that could've gone better. Saru had found the blue-eyed girl alright, but she'd blown up half of Philadelphia in the process. Whoops. Now she was a fugitive, robbed of her implants, relying on her "wits," hunted by aliens, Gods, and the monstrous spawn of fornicating universes. It was a crap deal, but it wasn't all bad. She'd stolen a plane, a luxury model with a fully stocked minibar. And she had company, a rogue Gaesporan named John. And there was something strangely liberating about having screwed up so badly you couldn't really do worse. Cloud Country is A Dark Sci-Fi Fantasy Thriller with aliens, monsters, extra-dimensional death Gods and a hardboiled female protagonist. It explores the absurdity of human existence through grotesque satire.RATED R for strong language, mentions of sex, and graphic violence. Contains intense horror and potentially disturbing imagery. Lovecraft, Neal Stephenson, China Mieville, Dan Simmons, David Cronenberg, David Lynch, Quentin Tarantino, Clive Barker, Akira, Alien, Gyo, Tank Girl, Swamp Thing, Spawn, Rick and Morty, Warhammer 40k, Grimdark, science fiction, horror, body horror, cyberpunk, absurdism, urban fantasy, new weird, weird fiction, slipstream, and speculative fiction.
