It was a beautiful fall day in Connecticut when Colleen Alexander, a lifelong competitive athlete, rode her bike home from work, having just learned her job with the nonprofit PeaceJam was secure. She had survived a diagnosis of lupus and brain surgery that almost took her life, and was married at last to the love of her life, Sean. Life was good as she met the eyes of a truck driver rolling up to the stop sign beside her. He didn't stop. The truck hit Colleen, running over her lower body with front and back tires and dragging her across the pavement. As she bled out in the street, nearby stranger surrounded her and the driver attempted to get away. An EMT herself, Colleen knew she had to stay awake. "I've just been reconnected with my soulmate," she told the medic. "We want to have a baby. I can't die now. Please don't let me die." Colleen spent five weeks in a coma and had 29 surgeries. But she survived, and despite losing her job and suffering from PTSD, she began to focus on all the heroes who saved her life. Determined to find a way to make something positive from her pain, she decided she'd run again. She would dedicate her race medals to the everyday heroes around us, including the medical staff and the 156 blood donors who saved her life. Since the accident Colleen has run 50 races and completed 40 triathalons, including 4 half-Ironman events (1.2-mile swim, 56-mile bike ride, 13.1-mile run). She is now a spokesperson for the Red Cross, and shares her incredible inspirational story to encourage others to take that first step forward.

Let him kiss me with the kisses of his mouth - for your love is more delightful than wine. (Song of Songs 1:2) How do you see God, really? As holy? Distant? Demanding? Unjust? Unfeeling? The Song of Songs-or Song of Solomon-is a tiny book in the heart of the Old Testament with a big message: God may not be who you think he is. While many people view the Song as a kind of marriage primer, Senyard and Pepper take a different approach. They dare readers to engage with the book as poetry--and in so doing, risk encountering the healing power hidden within its verses. The Kiss of God unpacks the scandalous story of a king so smitten with his bride that at times, he can hardly even speak. Who is she? Where does she come from? And what does he see in her? You might be surprised to find out. Deeply personal and highly readable, this book invites readers to find themselves within one of history's most beloved texts. "This book will send you to places you haven't gone, cause you to ask questions you haven't asked, and bring to your mind thoughts you haven't considered. Then, if you 'get it, ' you'll dance and laugh in the presence of a God who loves you beyond anything you ever dreamed. This is a life-changing book even for an old cynical preacher like me." -- Steve Brown, Key Life Network " The Kiss of God] is a refreshingly honest and boldly insightful book Reading these well-crafted pages may well help you find the love out there that can actually heal. But don't be surprised if along the way some of your unhelpful images of God become shattered." -- Gary W. Moon, Apprenticeship with Jesus "Rabbi Akiva is reported to have said that if the Torah was not given, the Songs of Songs would have been sufficient to guide the world. The authors have persuaded me that this Talmudic sage may have been right." -- Eliyahu (Ilya) Lizorkin, Evangelical Theological Seminary (Nazareth, Israel)

"An inspiring story that is destined to become a beloved Christmas classic, one that rekindles hope in the hearts of all children, both young and old "Gudrun Wegner"Awesome Enchanting I felt like I was a kid again, hearing my bedtime story. A miraculous story that I 'm sure will touch the hearts of many. Praise God "Julianne BrooksDear friends that I don't yet know, This story still touches me I am amazed every time I read it-and I wrote it It was total inspiration. At the time I wrote The Star of Mrs. Nicks, I was the mother of three preschool children and doing laundry-as usual It was getting close to Christmas, and I began to daydream. I could see this old stone house, which I had often driven by. It was overgrown with bushes and vines and I often wondered who may have lived there.Suddenly I felt the urge to write. "The snowflakes fell a fluffy veil..." and it began It was all I could do to tear myself from my pencil to change loads of laundry A few hours later the "story poem" was complete. I wrote this poem over twenty years ago. Two years ago, I read it to an elementary class, and they loved it They wanted copies and even wanted my autograph. I told them I would get copies or have it published. The story has a mysteryabout it that captures your heart and interest until the story is told. You can't put it down until it is done-because you don't want to I want to thank UCB, the people at Essence, the young people at the elementary schools who loved this story, my family and God for the inspiration that all of them have given me that has brought about the publishing of The Star of Mrs. Nicks. May God's will be done, and may God bless you

The Direction of Medical Ethics The direction bioethics, and specifically medical ethics, will take in the next few years will be crucial. It is an emerging specialty that has attempted a great deal, that has many differing agendas, and that has its own identity crisis. Is it a subspecialty of clinical medicine? Is it a medical reform movement? Is it a consumer pro tection movement? Is it a branch of professional ethics? Is it a ra tionale for legal decisions and agency regulations? Is it something physicians and ethical theorists do constructively together? Or is it a morally concentrated attack on high technology, with the prac titioners of scientific medicine and the medical ethicists in an adversarial role? Is it a conservative endeavor, exhibiting a Frankenstein syn drome in Medical Genetics ("this time, they have gone too far"), or a Clockwork Orange syndrome in Psychotherapy ("we have met hods to make you talk-walk-cry-kill")? Or does it suffer the afflic tion of overdependency on the informal fallacy of the Slippery Slope ("one step down this hill and we will never be able to stop") that remains an informal fallacy no matter how frequently it's used? Is it a restricted endeavor of analytic philosophy: what is the meaning of "disease," how is "justice" used in the allocation of medical resources, what constitutes "informed" or "consent?" Is it applied ethics, leading in clinical practice to some recommenda tion for therapeutic or preventive action? This incomplete list of questions indicates just how complex,

Insomnia and Anxiety

The statistics show that as much as twenty percent of the population suffers from chronic insomnia—and one-fourth of those with the condition eventually develop an anxiety disorder. As comorbid conditions, they contribute to any number of physical and social problems. Yet too often insomnia is undiagnosed, or treated as merely a symptom of the patient’s anxiety. Insomnia and Anxiety is the first clinician guidebook that considers the evaluation and management of insomnia and related sleep disturbances that occur conjointly with the common anxiety disorders. By exploring the ways that one condition may exacerbate the other, its authors present robust evidence of the limitations of viewing insomnia as secondary to GAD, agoraphobia, PTSD, and others in the anxiety spectrum. The book reviews cognitive and emotional factors common to anxiety and sleep disorders, and models a cognitive-behavioral approach to therapy in which improved sleep is a foundation for improved symptom management. Beginning and veteran practitioners alike will find vital insights into all areas of these challenging cases, including: Diagnostic and assessment guidelines. Cognitive-behavior therapy for insomnia. Behavioral strategies for managing insomnia in the context of anxiety. Cognitive strategies for managing comorbid anxiety and insomnia. Sleep-related cognitive processes. Pharmacological treatment considerations. Insomnia and Anxiety is highly useful to clinical psychologists given the range of treatment strategies it describes and to researchers because of its emphasis on the theoretical and empirical bases for its interventions. In addition, its accessible style makes it an excellent training tool for students of therapy and psychopathology.
