Despite the large number of publications on Joseph Conrad’s Polishness—including previous volumes of the series Conrad: Eastern and Western Perspectives—many questions remain. New Insights Into Conrad and Poland, edited by Wieslaw Krajka, brings together a variety of thematic and methodological approaches in search of new insights. After the opening chapter, which comments on Polishness as studied in previous volumes of this series, contributions examine the life of Conrad and members of his close family; Conrad’s literary works in relation to Polish literature; Polish reception of his oeuvre, including adaptations and educational influence, as translations, as works of art, and in schools and popular culture; the Polish Jewish experience; and exilic feelings. The coda of the volume is a study that presents a view of Russia as antithetical to Polishness. Essays range across traditional biographical criticism, literary analysis and interpretation, comparison of Conrad’s literary works and their intertextual study with those by other authors and with other works of art, translation and adaptation studies, investigations of reception of literature and popular culture, archetypal criticism, and philosophical criticism. Marie-Therese d'Alverny, Conservateur en-chef, and J. Reginald O'Donnell, C. S. B. , of the Pontifical Institute of Mediaeval Studies, Toronto, Canada, have been unable to identify him. Nothing at all, therefore, is known about Conrad, if that is the author's name. For there is some doubt that it is. In the colophon of the Admont commentary on Aquinas' De Ente et Essentia,l we find a word, so completely erased that it is illegible, followed by the words "de Prusya. " Martin Grabmann argues that it is correct to feel that the erasure is an erasure of the name "Conradi," since in the colophon of the Admont commentary on Dominicus Gundissalinus' De Unitate et Uno,2 which follows the commentary on the De Ente et Essentia, we find again an erased word followed by the words "de Prusya. " But the erasure is not complete. One can here read the name "Conradi. " 3 And so, the manuscript of the commentary on the De Unitate et Uno clearly attributed this work to Conrad of Prussia before the attempted erasure.

Visst är det fantastiskt spännande att titta tillbaka till tidigare århundraden? Hur hade våra gamla släktingar det? Hur såg vardagen ut? De levde ett helt annat liv utan bekvämligheter och nyhetsflöden. De älskade varandra, födde många barn, dog oftast i alltför ung ålder i olika epidemier. De slet hårt på sina små gårdar för att få ihop till livets nödtorft. Kyrkan hade stor betydelse och vidskepligheten var stor. I min dokumentärroman, som börjar i mitten av 1800-talet, får Du följa Hedvig, Carl Conrad, deras kärlekshistoria och liv. De var bördiga från gårdar i Kråksmåla och Bölemåla i Småland. Gården Kråksmåla nr 1 gav inte försörjning till familjen utan de sökte sig till Öland. Från att ha varit fri bonde blev Carl Conrad arrendator på en kronogård i Vicklebytrakten. Här inträffar stor dramatik, som jag inte vill avslöja i denna enkla presentation. Hedvig och Carl Conrad får sju söner, varav den yngste döptes till Fritiof Gustav. Vi får följa de olika sönernas idoga kamp för att hitta sin försörjning. Den äldste brodern, Vitalis Karnell, blev efter 15 års studier i Uppsala kyrkoherde i Karusuando och omtyckt samepräst. Mot alla odds lyckades det också bra för lille Gustav. Han hamnade i Jönköping, där han fick skolutbildning. Hans svåra umbäranden under barndomen resulterade i att han skrev tankeväckande naturlyriska dikter, som finns samlade i denna bok. Dessutom finns ett kapitel, som är Gustavs egna dagsboksanteckningar från 1904 till första världskrigets slut under parollen ”Man bör alltid inordna politiken under fredsidén och moralen” (16 oktober 1905). Ett unikt material. Boken är ett dokumentärhistoriskt arbete, som det har tagit lång tid att utföra. När jag har skrivit har jag oftast sett händelserna som filmscener. Det har varit intressant att ha fått umgås med min farfars far och mor och övriga släktingar. Jag känner stor ömhet för dem. Och nu berättar jag för er andra.

When Joseph Conrad’s novel Chance appeared in serial form in the New York Herald in 1912 and in book form in 1914 it established the author’s financial security for the first time. Following years of struggle to reach a wide audience for his fiction, Conrad benefitted from the American marketing of this novel for the women readers of romance. Aggressive advertising promoted the writer’s new focus on a female protagonist and Conrad’s division of the story’s location between land and sea. The novel proved popular and lucrative. Yet in spite of its economic success, Chance remains one of Conrad’s less well-known narratives. Familienbuch als Selbstzeugnis Das Familienbuch von Johann Conrad Schweighauser (1648-1713), das er zwischen 1663 und 1712 verfasst hat, steht im Zentrum dieser kommentierten Edition. Schweighauser wurde 1648 in Basel als Sohn eines Notars geboren. Mit 15 Jahren wurde er in die Geschafte seines Vaters eingefuhrt und 1673 zum Notar gewahlt. Zwei Jahre zuvor hatte er Valeria Stocklin (1649-1720/29) geheiratet, mit der er zwolf Kinder hatte, wovon sechs das Kindesalter uberlebten. Schweighausers politische Karriere begann am 30. November 1691 mit seiner Wahl zum Sechser der Rebleuten-Zunft; 1710 folgte die Wahl in den Kleinen Rat der Stadt Basel. Seine politische Laufbahn nimmt im Familienbuch jedoch nur wenig Raum ein: Zu Beginn der Eintrage stehen ausserordentliche Ereignisse im Vordergrund, zu denen das Auftauchen eines Zwergs, der Sturz eines Menschen in den Rhein, aber auch die Beobachtung von Kometen zu zahlen sind. Letztere thematisiert Matthias Boos in seinem Beitrag '... ein ernstlich zeichen seines zorns. Darstellung und Deutung der Kometen von 1664/65 in Johann Conrad Schweighausers Familienbuch'. Im Verlauf des Familienbuchs verschiebt sich der Schwerpunkt auf die Aufzeichnung familiarer Angelegenheiten, wie beispielweise Geburten, Taufen oder Hochzeiten. Diese geben einen Einblick in die sozialen Beziehungen Schweighausers, wie Silvia Flubacher und Elijah Strub im Kapitel 'Taufpatenschaften als Form der sozialen Vernetzung' aufzeigen. Der historische Kontext und das familiare Umfeld werden in den Beitragen von Simone Zweifel beleuchtet: 'Basel zu Zeiten Johann Conrad Schweighausers' und 'Johann Conrad Schweighauser und seine Familie'.
