Constance Mbassi Manga

This book presents a study of the role and functions of Camfranglais (CFrA) for diasporic Cameroonians living in the West, showcasing how closely language relates to identity and the role CFrA plays in negotiations of 'home' and 'belonging' for these diasporic Cameroonians.Mbassi Manga adopts an integrated approach, bringing together the lenses of Critical Discourse Analysis and Linguistic Ethnography to the analysis of data on Camfranglais (CFrA), a hybrid urban language form from Cameroon that combines elements of French, English, Pidgin English, and Cameroonian vernaculars. Drawn from a discussion on interviewees’ accounts of the place and value of language in their life trajectories, and markers of identity, 'home' and 'belonging' in Facebook chats, the data analysis highlights CFrA's symbolic value and its role as an expression of a diasporic Cameroonian identity. The book concludes on the place and importance of non-official language use and other intracommunity cultural practices in the lived experiences of so-called migrants, as tools promoting well-being and positive integration in Western host societies. This book will be of interest to scholars in Sociolinguistics, Linguistic Anthropology, Discourse Analysis, and Decolonial Studies.

Divorcing Flowers Review: Like the talking flowers of Wonderland, the garden Bacchus has planted in this book speaks for itself. Each poem, each flower is carefully shaped and nurtured by the poet's hand and, just like in nature, no two are identical. From shallots to primrose to briars, each piece has its own distinct fauna and tone, they've each got their reasons for thriving, for wilting. The minds of these flowers and poems are as unique and intricate as the one that willed them from the soil, or from the page. Forget a bouquet of posies for your mantelpiece, buy Divorcing Flowers for your coffee table.- Jay Rafferty, Sage Cigarettes Magazine.

Kudzu, Georgia tells the story of Sally Mae Hollifield's first year as a grammar school teacher in the 1970's. She falls in love with her students, the dirt poor children of a mill village in Appalachia.Besides teaching challenges, Sally Mae encounters unforgettable Southerners, their small-town petty politics and a ring of criminal activity. Despite these conflicts she makes friendships and meets her husband-to-be along the way."Kudzu, Georgia is a contemporary novel inspired by Constance Bonanni's experiences during her first year in teaching. Constance is now a teacher of teachers (she supervises student teachers in their classrooms) at our local university. She is a funny lady and her sense of humor permeates every page. I hope you enjoy her as much as I did." - Tanya Hazelton, Ph.D.
