"WHETHER I shall turn out to be the hero of my own life, or whether that station will be held by anybody else, these pages must show. To begin my life with the beginning of my life, I record that I was born." From the opening lines of David Copperfield, by Charles Dickens "A great many Christians would probably give God a handful of meal after He had filled the barrel; but they would hesitate to give Him the last handful on His promise to fill the barrel when empty." - Anonymous "It is difficult to get a man to understand something if his salary is dependent upon his not understanding it." Upton Sinclair "When a plan produces the right amount of money and is sustainable there is no longer a need for the visionary. The visionary will even be accused of doing what the opponents themselves want to do." Anonymous
Make Love Your Religion: How to Put Love First & Succeed at Doing What You Love
In Make Love Your Religion: How To Put Love First & Succeed at Doing What You Love, you will get an exclusive look at the steps author David Nazario takes to ensure that he only does what he loves, yet calls it "work". At age 34, David has never had a full-time job. He earns his income writing, speaking, and working with young people - all activities that he loves to do. Make Love Your Religion explores David's journey as an Afro-Puerto Rican writer, traveler, and young professional from a poverty-stricken city in southeastern Pennsylvania. This multi-genre text combines self-help, workbook, and memoir elements to create a narrative that encourages readers to consider doing what they love for a living a spiritual act. David's goal in writing this is to dispel, for people of all ages, the concept that we are trapped by our circumstances and to plant the seeds that success is within reach for all of us when we put love at the forefront of all of our endeavors.

The Greening of the Cities

The Greening of the Cities

David Nicholson-Lord

Routledge

First Published in 2004. The majority of our large manufacturing cities are in decline—thousands of acres of their former industrial greatness have become gigantic scrapheaps. New industries with new technologies no longer make it necessary to locate industry in cities, and social and fiscal pressures are drawing people out into the countryside. Thus a conflict is growing with cities dying for lack of industry and new housing— whilst conservationists resist the spread of development into the green belts or further into the rural landscape. This book is an important contribution to a contemporary debate which is of significance to everyone living in Britain: the need for a land-use policy which looks simultaneously at the towns and country and strikes a balance between urban and rural renewal

Boundaries, Territory and Postmodernity
Contributions to this collection seek to determine the extent to which states and boundaries have, in fact, disappeared, or are simply changing their functions as we move from an era of fixed territories into a post-Westphalian territorial system. A group of international political geographers and political scientists examine the changing nature of the state, pointing to significant changes on the one hand, but equally noting the continued importance of territory and boundaries in determining the political ordering of the post-modern world.

The Songs We Sang

The Songs We Sang

David Naughton Leavy

Andrews UK Limited

nidottu
This is a strong story of determination, love, loss and persistence. There are many songs and stories all wrapped up inside the need to pursue a worthy life. The beginning of the story sees Ronan, living in New Zealand, reeling after a message from Conor in England to say that their dad, Danny Farrell, has died. Once again, as with their mother's passing, only Conor had been able to attend their parent's funeral. The reminiscences come racing back over the phone. The frequent ceilidhs in their parents' house, when the tiles on the roof lifted, are now silenced for a while. Euan, the eldest, living in Canada, is quickly told the sad news, and he, too, at that stage of his life, is intending at some point to see the graves. They are all devastated by the news. Some years later, Conor, Euan and Ronan, decide to meet up and make a 'pilgrimage' to Ireland. There is sadness, but a determination to see both graves. Great characters are met along the way and the singing can be heard for miles.

sidottu
This accessible and cutting-edge work offers a new look at the history of western 'civilization,' one that brings into focus the interrelated suffering of oppressed humans and other animals. Nibert argues persuasively that throughout history the exploitation of other animals has gone hand in hand with the oppression of women, people of color, and other oppressed groups. He maintains that the oppression both of humans and of other species of animals is inextricably tangled within the structure of social arrangements. Nibert asserts that human use and mistreatment of other animals are not natural and do little to further the human condition. Nibert's analysis emphasizes the economic and elite-driven character of prejudice, discrimination, and institutionalized repression of humans and other animals. His examination of the economic entanglements of the oppression of human and other animals is supplemented with an analysis of ideological forces and the use of state power in this sociological expose of the grotesque uses of the oppressed, past and present. Nibert suggests that the liberation of devalued groups of humans is unlikely in a world that uses other animals as fodder for the continual growth and expansion of transnational corporations and, conversely, that animal liberation cannot take place when humans continue to be exploited and oppressed.

What is Critical Environmental Justice?

What is Critical Environmental Justice?

David Naguib Pellow

Polity Press
2017
sidottu
Human societies have always been deeply interconnected with our ecosystems, but today those relationships are witnessing greater frictions, tensions, and harms than ever before. These harms mirror those experienced by marginalized groups across the planet. In this novel book, David Naguib Pellow introduces a new framework for critically analyzing Environmental Justice scholarship and activism. In doing so he extends the field's focus to topics not usually associated with environmental justice, including the Israel/Palestine conflict and the Black Lives Matter movement in the United States. In doing so he reveals that ecological violence is first and foremost a form of social violence, driven by and legitimated by social structures and discourses. Those already familiar with the discipline will find themselves invited to think about the subject in a new way. This book will be a vital resource for students, scholars, and policy makers interested in transformative approaches to one of the greatest challenges facing humanity and the planet.

Witches and Witchcraft

Witches and Witchcraft

David Nash

Shire Publications
2014
nidottu
Witchcraft haunts the Western imagination to this day, from Central Europe to Britain to North America. This book explores the development of witchcraft and of the belief in it (stressing the difference between the two), the sixteenth- and seventeenth-century obsession that spawned witch-hunting, the eventual decline of witchcraft, and the phenomenon’s fascinating ‘afterlife’ that has involved the Nazis’ fixation and modern treatments including Arthur Miller’s acclaimed The Crucible. Fully illustrated with historical documents and colour photographs, and expertly written by Professor David Nash, this book is the perfect introduction to a subject that is compelling, disturbing and a little-understood cultural touchstone.
Scots at School

Scots at School

David Northcroft

Edinburgh University Press
2003
nidottu
What is the defining Scottish experience? The Kirk, Scots Law, Hampden Park? There are several contenders, but school is the universal and enduring one. Stories and myths have clustered around its chief features: *Pupils as lads o' pairts. *Teachers as dominies. *The democratic intellect. *The village skweel. *Hard work, getting on and the power of the tawse. *Academic excellence and 'sticking in'. Telling the tale of Scotland's educational experience over the past 250 years, this book draws on the first-hand testimony of pupils, teachers and parents - with extracts taken from biography, local history, journal and oral interview, along with fascinating contemporary photographs. The anthologised material is accompanied by David Northcroft's narrative outlining the history of the distinctive Scottish school system. By drawing out key themes of identity, nationalism and 'democracy', he sets the claims that have traditionally been made for the system's excellence and independent spirit against the accounts of people's actual experiences. This history, enhanced by the personal stories of those involved, offers the reader a vivid account of the experience of Scottish schooling.Key Features: *Strong 'nostalgia' market for books of this kind. *Draws on broad range of personal testimony. *Includes extracts from Tom Devine, John Galt, Hugh Miller, Magnus Magnusson, Neil Munro, Alan Spence and T. C. Smout. *Each section is prefaced with an editorial introduction - taken together, they trace the Scottish educational experience over the past 250 years.
