Wesley, Aquinas, and Christian Perfection
Edgardo A. Colón-Emeric
Baylor University Press
2018
nidottu
Employing fresh, innovative readings, Edgardo Colon-Emeric examines and underscores the centrality of the concept of perfection for the theologies of Thomas Aquinas and John Wesley--and finds them, surprisingly, largely complementary. Utilizing the image of a ""kneeling ecumenism,"" he offers a practical account of how ecumenical conversations can move forward. At a time when many Methodists struggle to understand Catholicism and many Catholics know little of Wesley and Methodism, this stimulating work provides the church as a whole a communal grammar of holiness, in demonstrating how the theologies of perfection of Aquinas and Wesley have significant messages for both groups.

Who is Jesus of Nazareth, the person that taught the Apostles? What is baptism and why did He command us to be baptized? How did the Apostles administer that baptism and how does it relate to the salvation of those who place their trust in Him? Patristic literature holds the key to correctly understand scripture the way in which the writers intended. Therefore, "Apostolic Faith" addresses these questions in light of the interpretation of scripture held by the earliest disciples of the Apostles. This method will greatly assist in correctly understanding what Jesus meant when He said, "I and my Father are one" and what Peter meant when he said, "Be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins."

Baptism: Of Water and the Holy Spirit

As is implied by the title, this book is built upon the premise of John 3:5 which states, "Unless a person is born of water and the Holy Spirit they cannot enter the kingdom of God." This body of work examines the sacrament of water baptism, and the baptism of the Holy Spirit in their historical setting. More importantly, this work answers the question, "Are sins taken away by water or spiritual baptism?" Many citations from the New Testament claim that it is the blood of Jesus that cleanses one who believes from their sins, but how is that reality received? These questions and more are answered while an examination of historical issues are covered such as; The re-baptism of heretics joining the church, and the practices of catechumen and the baptism of infants. Proof texts that are used to support the idea of baptismal salvation are reviewed as well as passages of scripture which claim that people who call upon the Lord shall be saved.
The love of two young people drawn together by fate- one who is a bringer of life, one who is a guide to the afterlife- threaten the very fabric of life itself. The beautiful heroine of Indana, Lena, always knew she was different- with her visions, premonitions, and nightly dream visits from the same handsome stranger, she certainly was not a normal college student. A young migr to America from Bulgaria, Lena's life is thrown into turmoil when her only friend dies tragically at the hands of the very same man she's dreamed of since a child. With a face of an angel and hands as cold as death itself, Lena finds herself falling for Kyle, this taker of souls. Lena's quest to learn the truth about herself, her name and her true nature will lead her ever deeper into peril, and even into the world between life and death- a world where few venture, and fewer still return.

The stories of Yasunari Kawabata evoke an unmistakably Japanese atmosphere in their delicacy, understatement, and lyrical description. Like his later works, First Snow on Fuji is concerned with forms of presence and absence, with being, with memory and loss of memory, with not-knowing. Kawabata lets us slide into the lives of people who have been shattered by war, loss, and longing. These stories are beautiful and melancholy, filled with Kawabata's unerring vision of human psychology. First Snow on Fuji was originally published in Japan in 1958, ten years before Kawabata received the Nobel Prize. Kawabata selected the stories for this collection himself, and the result is a stunning assembly of disparate moods and genres. This new edition is the first to be published in English.

Church renewal always happens from the margins, never from the center. Church renewal burns with fiery passion among the LatinX pueblos and barrios, and this energy in Latin America can be harnessed to reform doctrine, worship, and the core purpose of Methodists. Emil Brunner said that "the church exists by mission as fire exists by burning." At times, this fire has burned brightly and served as a light to the nations. Sometimes it has been mishandled and caused harm, and still at other times, it seems to dwindle to a few embers. The flame of church renewal burns brightly among many poor and marginalized followers of Christ. The Holy Spirit, like the wind, blows where it will, but some places are windier than others. Social peripheries are particularly windy places. This book tests whether renewal of doctrine, worship, and mission can happen by looking to the experience of Methodists in LatinX and Latin American ecclesial contexts. In true Wesleyan spirit, this renewal does not confine itself to Methodism, but the people called metodistas share in the movement's fundamental calling to reform the church universal in its mission to the world.

Rei Hayakawa, a lonely, bulimic freelance writer with a drinking problem, wanders into a convenience store. She's swaddled in her coat and scarf, while her thoughts of alienation, of hunger, of the need for gin and white wine drift in via stream-of-consciousness. A trucker named Okabe walks in, deliberately grazes her behind, and at the same time, Rei's cell phone, set on vibrate, goes off over her heart. Rei impulsively gets into Okabe's truck with him and stays. Suddenly she finds herself embarking on a road journey across the wintry landscape of Japan with a complete, and possibly dangerous, stranger. Can the physical relationship that develops between them give Rei what she needs, and can she ever free herself from her self-destructive tendencies? Both parties are wounded, guarded and distant can they learn to trust each other? Author Mari Akasaka brings her trademark wordplay and vivid imagery to this compelling story of an unlikely pairing set against the bleak backdrop of Japan s highways. Adapted for the screen in 2003, Vibrator has also been made into a film."
