The Beneventan Chant

The Beneventan Chant

Thomas Forrest Kelly

From the High Middle Ages the dominance of Gregorian chant has obscured the fact that musical practice in early medieval Europe was far richer than has hitherto been recognized. Despite its historical importance, the "Gregorian" is not the most consistent and probably not the oldest form of Christian chant. The recovery and study of regional musical dialects having a common ancestry in the Christian church and Western musical tradition are reshaping our view of the early history of Christian liturgical music. Thomas Kelly's major study of the Beneventan chant reinstates one of the oldest surviving bodies of Western music: the Latin church music of southern Italy as it existed before the spread of Gregorian chant. Dating from the seventh and eighth centuries it was largely forgotten after the Carolingian desire for political and liturgical uniformity imposed "Gregorian" chant throughout the realm. But a few later scribes, starting apparently in the tenth century, preserved a part of this regional heritage in writing. This book reassembles and describes the surviving repertory.
The Legacy of the French Revolutionary Wars

The Legacy of the French Revolutionary Wars

A major contribution to the study of collective identity and memory in France, this book examines a French republican myth: the belief that the nation can be adequately defended only by its own citizens, in the manner of the French revolutionaries of 1793. Alan Forrest examines the image of the citizen army reflected in political speeches, school textbooks, art and literature across the nineteenth century. He reveals that the image appealed to notions of equality and social justice, and with time it expanded to incorporate Napoleon's victorious legions, the partisans who repelled the German invader in 1814 and the people of Paris who rose in arms to defend the Republic in 1870. More recently it has risked being marginalized by military technology and by the realities of colonial warfare, but its influence can still be seen in the propaganda of the Great War and of the French Resistance under Vichy.

International Human Rights and Humanitarian Law: Treaties, Cases, and Analysis introduces the reader to the international legal instruments and case law governing the substantive and procedural dimensions of international human rights and humanitarian law, including economic, social, and cultural rights. The book, which was originally published in 2006, also discusses the history and organisational structure of human rights and humanitarian law enforcement mechanisms. A chapter is devoted a chapter to the issues surrounding the incorporation of international law into U.S. law, including principles of constitutional and statutory interpretation, conflict rules, and the self-execution doctrine. Questions and comments sections provide critical analyses of issues raised in the materials. The last chapter addresses theoretical issues facing contemporary international human rights and humanitarian law and its enforcement.
The Constitution as Treaty

The Constitution as Treaty

The Constitution as Treaty transforms the conceptualization of US constitutional law by exploring the interpretive implications of viewing the US Constitution as a treaty. It argues that federal courts constitute an international tribunal system, and, as such, their jurisdiction is governed by international law enabling them to exercise judicial review authority and undercutting much of the judicial activist critique. The Constitution as Treaty continues with an examination of what is international law and its major interpretive principles in order to set the stage for examining how different sources and principles of international law are intrinsically integrated into US constitutional law and, thereby, are available to federal courts for deciding cases. It addresses the Charming Betsy Rule, the non-self-execution doctrine, the last-in-time rule, and the proper use of customary international law and other international law sources not mentioned in Article III. The Constitution as Treaty concludes that federal courts generally must construe the United States' international legal obligations liberally.
Bioacoustics Maternal Investment and Developmental Strategies in the Mole Crickets Scapteriscus Acletus and Vicinus
Abstract: Three aspects of the reproductive ecology of the southern and tawny mole crickets, Scapteriscus acletus and vicinus. were investigated. Twenty-two sound fields of calling males were measured under field conditions. Total power output ranged from 1.9 to 22.4 uWatt and was positively correlated with male size and soil moisture. Efficiency of sound production was only 0.02 to 0.16 percent. The shape of the sound field approximates a hemisphere. Lifetime oviposition by caged, individual female mole crickets was monitored outdoors. Oviposition is highly seasonal, and females that mature in the fall wait until the following spring to oviposit. Most eggs are laid in May and June and percent hatch of clutches decreases later in the season. Dry weight of eggs, number of eggs per clutch, and percent hatch decrease with successive clutches from individual females. Average investment in eggs per clutch ranged from 10 to 24 percent of female body weight for acletus and from 5 to 16 percent for vicinus females. Lifetime investment (dry weight of eggs) was greater than 100 percent of female body weight (wet weight) for 6 of 12 acletus females, but only 1 of 8 vicinus females had a lifetime investment in eggs equaling its body weight. In acletus. but not vicinus, large females produced more offspring and the average size of their egg clutches was larger than those of smaller females. Insect size tactics and developmental strategies are discussed in relation to decisions individuals make about when to mature. Such decisions carry with them costs and benefits in terms of an individual's fitness. Whenever size affects reproductive success, selection should act such that individuals evaluate the costs and benefits due to changes in size and mature when the cost/benefit ratio is maximized. Predictions about seasonal changes in adult sizes within a natural population of mole crickets are tested. The changes in seasonal distributions of adult sizes of mole crickets support the predictions and suggest that individuals make decisions about when to mature based on costs and benefits associated with changes in size. My obsession with Isa started with a single glance. From that first moment standing on the streets of Chicago in the midst of a Bellandi war, she consumed me. Owned me, without ever setting eyes on me herself. I protected her, waiting for the day when she would be mine. No matter what it takes, no matter what illusions I must show her, she will be my wife.Mi Reina was born to rule at my side. I'll just have to break her first.
