Hybris - the preferred English spelling is hubris - could be called a historical and philosophical reflection on the time-honored rise and decline of nations. Hubris is the wanton arrogance and eventual over-reach of the all-powerful, be they persons or nations. The subject of this study is the USA. The time is now. Never before in human history has one nation been so dominant worldwide in economic, political, cultural and military influence. This reflection devotes much time to the concept and reality of a culture crust, which incases each nation, even the most democratic, free and open. It is possible that culture is the true carrier of history. Culture shapes, and in turn is shaped by, the way people in each nation think, feel, act and talk. Mostly, they are comfortable in their culture cocoon. Multi-ethnic states with tension and strife are the exception, however. It is likely that most Americans reject the notion of such a crust. There are so many varieties of them, for one thing. They are free to travel. They follow the news. Theirs is the most open of countries and in the view of more than just a few, the greatest. But outsiders see the United States increasingly not only as powerful but markedly uniform and different from their lands, in its behavior, world view and the exercise of that very power. Inside the crust, however, few are able to look at their nation as a foreigner would and does. The very distinctiveness of America is a relatively new phenomenon and not unrelated to the enormity of its power. The second thrust of the book relates to the Middle East. September 11, 2001, came first. Second, the struggle between Israelis and Palestinians is seen as the "conflict of the century." The war in Iraq is viewed as a "fatal distraction" from the justified war on terror. The reasons for the Iraq war, both real and professed, are examined in some detail. The benign neglect of the former struggle and the hot pursuit of the latter war are interpreted as strate
Twenty years after the end of apartheid, race still continues to play a role in South African society. Now, however, it is a black majority government that is demanding and maintaining race thinking in an effort to redress the discrimination of the past. Both the Employment Equity Act and the Black Economic Empowerment Act, for instance, use the racial categories of apartheid to achieve their ends, but the demand to classify people racially extends beyond business to many other areas of life. Ironically, in a society that is constitutionally committed to nonracialism, race thinking and race classification have been carried forward unthinkingly from the past. Not only does the rationale for such continuation not address the real concerns of our society but the system of classifying also carries inevitable seeds of conflict within itself. What is more, the classification of fellow human beings into races remains a crime against humanity, no matter what justification is offered. In writing this powerfully engaged and argued book, Gerhard Maré takes up the challenge to imagine a world beyond the boundaries created by race, one in which we can live together imaginatively and open to the diversity each of us presents.
As the vigorous debate over the New Perspective on Paul will only be decided by means of careful consideration of the relevant Scripture passages, Romans 4 and the New Perspective on Paul makes a significant contribution to the discussion. Interpretations by scholars promoting the New Perspective approach are reviewed in detail and contrasted with those of scholars who are critical toward this method. A detailed analysis of the context and exegesis of Romans 4 completes the work. By suggesting a more nuanced exegesis of Romans 4, this book is able to offer a careful critique of the New Perspective while still noting the positive aspects of the latter approach.

Many organizations develop strategic plans that gather dust on bookshelves. Many other organizations employ Lean and Six Sigma methodologies to eliminate waste and reduce process variation only to find they are not moving the big bars that measure success for the organization. Driving Strategy to Execution Using Lean Six Sigma: A Framework for Creating High Performance Organizations details a framework for leveraging an organization’s Lean Six Sigma capability in a manner that drives their strategic plans to execution by linking their strategy deployment into the fabric of their day-to-day operations. Bolstered by real-world examples of successful strategy execution, leveraging, and Six Sigma, the book provides: An organizational framework for understanding the strategic processA model to follow in developing and executing short-range (5 years out) strategiesA model for longer-range visioning, scenario modeling, and strategy executionAn assessment tool for measuring an organization’s transformation to high performanceThe framework provides a proven methodology that takes a systems approach to creating high performance. It presents the core process of strategy development and SA&D with the governing process of driving the right metrics through a balanced scorecard approach focused on the organization’s value stream. It then combines this with the enabling process of change management and the creation of a culture of problem solving, waste elimination, and internal discipline to standard work.Anyone can write a book on the procedures behind "Strategy" without understanding the key drivers that give a strategy excitement, commitment, and fire. Here, Gerhard Plenert and Tom Cluley do more than that. First, they examine how to make a strategy meaningful and powerful. Then, they underline the critical piece to strategy development—the execution piece—which takes the glossy strategy brochure off the shelf and makes a usable and executable plan. The book focuses on how to build great strategies and includes examples of what makes them great. It demonstrates how a well-developed strategy generates excitement within an organization, offering you the tools to navigate and design a workable and achievable plan for success for your organization.
Optical Microscanners and Microspectrometers using Thermal Bimorph Actuators

Optical Microscanners and Microspectrometers using Thermal Bimorph Actuators shows how to design and fabricate optical microsystems using innovative technologies and and original architectures. A barcode scanner, laser projection mirror and a microspectrometer are explained in detail, starting from the system conception, discussing simulations, choice of cleanroom technologies, design, fabrication, device test, packaging all the way to the system assembly. An advanced microscanning device capable of one- and two-dimensional scanning can be integrated in a compact barcode scanning system composed of a laser diode and adapted optics. The original design of the microscanner combines efficiently the miniaturized thermal mechanical actuator and the reflecting mirror, providing a one-dimensional scanning or an unique combination of two movements, depending on the geometry. The simplicity of the device makes it a competitive component. The authors rethink the design of a miniaturized optical device and find a compact solution for a microspectrometer, based on a tunable filter and a single pixel detector. A porous silicon technology combines efficiently the optical filter function with a thermal mechanical actuator on chip. The methodology for design and process calibration are discussed in detail. The device is the core component of an infrared gas spectrometer.
Second Order Differential Equations presents a classical piece of theory concerning hypergeometric special functions as solutions of second-order linear differential equations. The theory is presented in an entirely self-contained way, starting with an introduction of the solution of the second-order differential equations and then focusingon the systematic treatment and classification of these solutions. Each chapter contains a set of problems which help reinforce the theory. Some of the preliminaries are covered in appendices at the end of the book, one of which provides an introduction to Poincaré-Perron theory, and the appendix also contains a new way of analyzing the asymptomatic behavior of solutions of differential equations. This textbook is appropriate for advanced undergraduate and graduate students in Mathematics, Physics, and Engineering interested in Ordinary and Partial Differntial Equations. A solutions manual is available online.
From New Peoples to New Nations is a broad historical account of the emergence of the Metis as distinct peoples in North America over the last three hundred years. Examining the cultural, economic, and political strategies through which communities define their boundaries, Gerhard J. Ens and Joe Sawchuk trace the invention and reinvention of Metis identity from the late eighteenth century to the present day. Their work updates, rethinks, and integrates the many disparate aspects of Metis historiography, providing the first comprehensive narrative of Metis identity in more than fifty years. Based on extensive archival materials, interviews, oral histories, ethnographic research, and first-hand working knowledge of Metis political organizations, From New Peoples to New Nations addresses the long and complex history of Metis identity from the Battle of Seven Oaks to today’s legal and political debates.
