The History and Archaeology of Phoenicia

The History and Archaeology of Phoenicia

Hélène Sader

Society of Biblical Literature
2019
sidottu
The History and Archaeology of Phoenicia draws on written sources and archaeological excavations to present the history and archaeology of Iron Age Phoenicia proper. H l ne Sader's unique approach focuses on evidence from the Phoenician homeland rather than the colonies, to present a clear picture of Phoenicia and its inhabitants. Historical as well as modern maps with the locations of relevant archaeological sites familiarize readers with the topography and toponymy of the area. Sader's evaluation and synthesis of the evidence is a corrective to assumptions of a unified Phoenician kingdom as presented in later written sources.

Canada’s recent sesquicentennial celebrations were the latest in a long, steady progression of Canadian cultural memory projects. Unbecoming Nationalism investigates the power of commemorative performances in the production of nationalist narratives. Using 'unbecoming' as a theoretical framework to unsettle or decolonize nationalist narratives, Helene Vosters examines an eclectic range of both state-sponsored social memory projects and counter-memorial projects to reveal and unravel the threads connecting reverential military commemoration, celebratory cultural nationalism, and white settler-colonial nationalism.Vosters brings readings of institutional, aesthetic, and activist performances of Canadian military commemoration, settler-colonial nationalism, and redress into conversation with literature that examines the relationship between memory, violence, and nationalism from the disciplinary arenas of performance studies, Canadian studies, critical race and Indigenous studies, memory studies, and queer and gender studies. In addition to using performance as a theoretical framework, Vosters uses performance to enact a philosophy of praxis and embodied theory.

Corporate Lease Analysis

Corporate Lease Analysis

This work provides a comprehensive look at the latest developments in lease financing. Rather than offering an exposition of leasing theory, Nunnally, Plath, and Johns present the application of this theory to actual business situations. The various types of leases are clearly delineated, including their advantages, disadvantages, and appropriate use. In emphasizing decision-making techniques, the authors incorporate into the volume the tax implications of leasing, the lease versus buy material, and the major contributions of academic research in leasing, with an explanation of how the research both increases the use value of leasing and applies to actual financing problems. The volume is written in a clear, readable style and is divided into five subject areas: leasing concepts, analytical foundations of leasing, reporting for leases, evaluating lease transactions, and the role of leasing in modern financial management. The authors begin the book with a description of the types of leases and their tax, cash flow, and profit implications. A full chapter focuses on the fundamental techniques of time value of money and capital budgeting, which underlie lease analysis; these techniques are subsequently used to illustrate basic principles of lease valuation. Simple numerical examples introduce different lease valuation methods, and explain how to calculate rate of return and identify the appropriate rate of discount. Several contract provisions that complicate lease valuation problems are discussed, including variable rate lease payments, leveraged lease arrangements, and sale-and-leaseback transactions. The work concludes with a survey of contemporary leasing practices and costs. This study will be an important asset for all types of financial managers, as well as for students in finance and accounting courses and for both public and academic libraries.

Whitehorse traces the storied past of Yukon's capital city, from its origins in ancient aboriginal camps through the epic changes of the Klondike Gold Rush, the building of the Alaska Highway, and the settlement of First Nations land claims. Set amidst rolling mountains on the edge of the Yukon River's swift green waters, the city today blends aboriginal traditions with the tastes, music, and cultures of people from around the world. Yukon authors Helene Dobrowolsky and Linda Johnson headed up a talented team of writers and researchers to create this portrait of a legendary place. From its early days, Whitehorse was Yukon's transportation hub, linking the Pacific with trails, then rails, then the elegant sternwheelers that steamed downriver to Dawson City until highways and air travel took their place. The town hosted a dazzling parade of people over the centuries, many of whom appear in these pages: hunters, traders, gold-seekers, soldiers, miners, ships' captains, entrepreneurs, dog-mushers, storytellers, sports icons, politicians, community builders, adventurers, and artists. Filled with lively writing, colorful anecdotes, and an impressive array of contemporary and archival photos, Whitehorse celebrates the history of a very special place.
