A fascinating book, from a leading maths educator and demystifier, that shows how maths is relevant to our everyday lives. Have you ever wondered how the meter in a taxi works? Or why a lift takes so long to respond to your call? Is there a mathematical secret to making a hit single? And how long is a piece of string? In this fascinating book you will find the answers to these and many other intriguing questions of everyday life. Discover the astonishing '37% rule' for blind dates, how to avoid the gentleman's urinal, and some extraordinary scams that people have devised to get rich quick. Here you will also find the origins of the seven-day week and the seven-note scale, an explanation of why underdogs sometimes win, some clever techniques for detecting fraud, and the reason why epidemics sweep across a nation and disappear just as quickly. How Long is a Piece of String? is the perfect book for anyone who is curious about the way in which maths underlies so much in our everyday lives. Whatever your mathematical ability level, you will find this book informative, thought-provoking and, most of all, fun. Word count: 35,000
Mathematics Education as a Research Domain: A Search for Identity
No one disputes how important it is, in today's world, to prepare students to un derstand mathematics as well as to use and communicate mathematics in their future lives. That task is very difficult, however. Refocusing curricula on funda mental concepts, producing new teaching materials, and designing teaching units based on 'mathematicians' common sense' (or on logic) have not resulted in a better understanding of mathematics by more students. The failure of such efforts has raised questions suggesting that what was missing at the outset of these proposals, designs, and productions was a more profound knowledge of the phenomena of learning and teaching mathematics in socially established and culturally, politically, and economically justified institutions - namely, schools. Such knowledge cannot be built by mere juxtaposition of theories in disci plines such as psychology, sociology, and mathematics. Psychological theories focus on the individual learner. Theories of sociology of education look at the general laws of curriculum development, the specifics of pedagogic discourse as opposed to scientific discourse in general, the different possible pedagogic rela tions between the teacher and the taught, and other general problems in the inter face between education and society. Mathematics, aside from its theoretical contents, can be looked at from historical and epistemological points of view, clarifying the genetic development of its concepts, methods, and theories. This view can shed some light on the meaning of mathematical concepts and on the difficulties students have in teaching approaches that disregard the genetic development of these concepts.

Mathematics Education as a Research Domain: A Search for Identity
In 1978, in the foreword to Weeding and Sowing: A Preface to a Science of Mathematics Education, Hans Freudenthal wrote that his book is a preface to a science that does not exist. Almost 20 years later, does his claim still hold true? The present book is the result of the reflection of many individuals in mathematics education on this and related questions. Is mathematics education a science? Is it a discipline? In what sense? What is its place within other domains of research and academic disciplines? What accounts for its specificity? In the book, the reader will find a range of possible answers to these questions, a variety of analyses of the actual directions of research in different countries, and a number of visions for the future of research in mathematics education. The book is a result of an ICMI Study, whose theme was formulated as: What is Research in Mathematics Education and What are Its Results?'. One important outcome of this study was the realization of the reasons for the difficulty of the questions that the study was posing, leading possibly to a set of other questions, better suited to the actual concerns and research practices of mathematics education researchers. The book addresses itself to researchers in mathematics education and all those working in their neighborhood who are concerned with the problems of the definition of this new scientific domain emerging at their borders.
On Invisibility; or, towards a minor jujitsu
On Invisibility attempts to meditate on the relationality between the seen and unseen, known and unknowable, particularly when in relation with an other, when grappling - in touch with - another. This text opens the dossier that, whilst seemingly antonyms, invisibility is part of visibility; that each act of seeing is fraught with the possibility of blindness. And more than that, relationality with another is premised on this very unknowability. Which is why, not only does one encounter jiu-jitsu through practice, praxis; not only does one encounter jiu-jitsu through an encounter with the other; part of it always escapes us, remains enigmatic. Thus, not only is it arte suave, it is always also potentially arte bela. So, even as we attempt to address the question what is jiu-jitsu, part of it will always remain beyond us. Which might be why we have no choice but to turn to art: for, all that we know, can see, of jiu-jitsu will be fragments of it - sketches.

A Comparison of the Trade Union Merger Process in Britain and Germany

Trade unions in Europe are currently facing a series of challenges that stem from changes to regulatory and production regimes implemented by the state and employers, in order to compete in an increasingly internationalized economy. In response to these challenges, trade union movements have been dramatically restructuring; long-standing principles of organization have been jettisoned in an attempt to develop new structures. Central to this process of structural adaptation are the mergers of trade unions. This informative book focuses on the merger process in Britain and Germany and, uniquely, it reviews the wider implications of these developments - particularly for North America. As well as addressing the reasons for mergers, the book also examines the process whereby mergers are concluded, investigates the consequences, and analyses the costs and benefits of the post-merger organisation. Drawing on interviews conducted with senior policy-makers engaged in merger processes, this book explores the extent of internal union reform brought about by the merger process, and also identifies the implications of this reform for trade unions world-wide. Structured in distinct sections, this book covers topic such as:what distinguishes the British and German systems? trade union structures pre-merger issues settling the terms of the mergers post-merger developments. This book forms part of the Routledge Research in Employment Relations series featuring works of high academic merit drawn from a wide range of academic studies in the social sciences. It is a valuable resource for postgraduate students studying business and management, industrial employee relations, and trade unions.

The game of baseball is a beautiful thing. It teaches you things like dealing with failure, paying attention to detail, individual effort leading to teamwork, putting in work and having nothing to show for it, and many more life lessons. Perhaps, the life lessons taught within the game of baseball are what make it such a beautiful thing. This passion that I have for baseball is what I wish to spread with as many people that want to listen. Living out your dream of going to college and being a professional athlete is a special feeling. However, it only means something if you live in the moment and enjoy each step along the way. Being able to understand this throughout my journey and analyzing each part of it has allowed me the knowledge and relationships to put together this book. As my playing career comes to an end and another chapter of my life waits, I only grow more anxious to see what will come next in life. Not anxious because I don't know what to do with myself, but because I can't wait to learn and master whatever I do next. This trait as a lifelong learner, led to the idea of this book. As I enter the coaching world, high school and local club teams, I've already noticed a few flaws. The one flaw that I wish to address is the idea of using baseball as a moneymaking scheme and a lack of coaching while doing so. The goal of this book is to provide a general understanding of how to play baseball and go about your business in the right manner. The intent is that coaches, players, and parents can use this a universal guide to help them succeed in the "baseball world". All of the baseball information within this book is the same stuff that my coauthors or I were taught throughout our professional careers. The coauthors are trusted friends and family that play the game and carry themselves the right way. My brother, Alex Burnett, was my role model growing up. David Fletcher is known everywhere he goes as being, "the best defender I've ever seen". Jeremy Martinez is "Mr. All-American", shown by his work ethic and character. David, Jeremy, and I played on the same travel ball team (OC Juice) for six years coached by Joey Martinez, where a lot of our common principles were engraved into us. A lot of what makes me the person I am is my mom, Lisa Moore. The life lessons I've learned have all stemmed from the way that she raised me. I felt like this book wouldn't be complete without her. She has been with me along the entire ride and has dedicated so much of her life towards my wishes. As every single mother knows, it can't be done alone. That is why I want to thank everyone that has been apart of my life and playing career. I love all of you God bless you
