These poems follow the aftermath of and recovery from trauma. Amanda Larson’s Gut begins with an epigraph from Frank O’Hara: “Pain always produces logic, which is very bad for you.” From there, Larson launches an unflinching interrogation of how a young woman maintains agency in the wake of trauma, violence, and desire. Larson spins a conversation between works of feminist theory—including the those of Cathy Caruth, Susan Bordo, Patricia Hill Collins, Anne Carson, Hélène Cixous, and bell hooks—and her own experiences. The book moves through Larson’s recovery while questioning the limits of the very term and of language as a whole. She employs a variety of different forms, including prose, Q&A poems, and a timeline, reflecting both the speaker’s obsession with control and her growing willingness to let it go. With a measured voice, Larson finds a path for how to move beyond logic during processes of trauma and recovery.Gut won the Omnidawn 1st/2nd Book Contest, selected by Jericho Brown.

"An extraordinary accomplishment and an important piece of writing..." Marie Mutsuki Mockett, author of Where the Dead Pause and the Japanese Say Goodbye "MW Larson has made an important contribution to the English-speaking world's understanding of the events in Japan during and after March 11, 2011. Larson's book captures the complexity of what happened: a triple disaster of earthquake, tsunami and nuclear accident that took the lives of almost 20,000 people, and uprooted hundreds of thousands more. Larson gives a textured and compassionate account of those events via the accounts of people who lived through them. He shows a journalist's ability to listen, and a novelist's flair for bringing those stories to life. He also shows an intense concern for the fate of Tohoku, having spent much time himself up in the disaster zone, which shows in his feel for places and the people. The personal connection makes the story all the more compelling, as the disaster has clearly changed Larson's life as well. Well done!" -- Martin Fackler, former Tokyo bureau chief for the New York Times "Vivid and precise and efficient, each line impeccably elegant yet packed with concrete information..." -- Valerie Laken, author of Separate Kingdoms and Dream House Larson follows the lives of a hairdresser, a café owner, a cattle rancher, and a nuclear-energy worker from the moment the 2011 tsunami hit Japan's Tohoku region through the subsequent years of recovery, grief, and frustration. In simple, straightforward prose, Larson chronicles their attempts to recover what they had lost despite a government response replete with missed opportunities and predictable missteps.

Book Synopsis: This short story is based on an actual dream. It started as I was walking through grass and came across a trail that I decided to follow. I meet a gentleman along the way and we agreed that it was better to walk with someone. Along our trek, we talked about life and he had a lot of knowledge and wisdom that he shared. He queried me about my life that I had been reluctant to answer. I finally figured out who that person was. We continued our walk when we came to a crossroads that I had been to before. My friend asked me which road I had taken previously. I told him I went straight which I entered the Valley of Death, Psalm 23:4.Later we traveled to hell under his guidance. Returning to the crossroads we took the right trail on our final venture.Autobiography: Blair Larson - In the year 1945, I was born in Albert Lea, Minnesota, a town with a population of circa 17,000 people. My parents were hard workers in a meatpacking plant. My family attended church every Sunday. I went to Sunday school right after church. I was baptized as an infant and was confirmed in my early teens. The church was important to me during my late teens. Just before I joined the service my beliefs began to wane. I was in the United States Air Force I met some believers in Christ and I started to believe again. I wished I could say that ended my wavering but it did not. I still was a Christmas and Easter believer. I moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota until I got married and moved back to Albert Lea. My family went to church for a short time. Our marriage later dissolved, and I moved to Minneapolis again. I met some Christians where I worked. I was invited to go to several Christian events, one the most memorable being evangelist Billy Graham. I went down for an altar call and was a few feet from him. I still had trouble with the wavering, but I got better. The last church I attended closed its doors and it was one I enjoyed. Now I am seeking a home church that is bible-based. While at my last church, I wrote Dream Journey. It started out by just jotting down my dream thoughts. Occasionally I looked at what I had written, then rewrote the manuscript and it began to evolve into a short story. I remember that the dream, as it was the most vivid dream I ever had. It was one that I'll never forget. After I had written the story, my friends that had read thought I should share it.

“[Larson's] writing is brilliant tonic even amidst the flames. Especially amidst the flames. I’m grateful for it.”—Rick Bass, author of With Every Great BreathFrom celebrated poet and ecologist Katherine Larson, an elegant collection of lyric essays that embraces fractures, contradictions, and the interconnectedness of life on Earth. Raising two children, coping with pandemic isolation, and grappling with the magnitude of the current extinction crisis, Katherine Larson finds herself in need of an antidote for despair. This is when Larson encounters kintsugi—the art of repairing broken pottery with gold-dusted lacquer. Wedding of the Foxes borrows from this ancient practice to create a new interpretative framework, one that seeks beauty in both breakage and unexpected connections. Here, Larson juxtaposes the elaborate courtship dance of sandhill cranes with scientific reports on diminishing avian populations to shed light on the urgency of climate crisis. She braids the wisdoms of a wonderfully varied range of forebears and predecessors—Gaston Bachelard, Tawada Yoko, Francis Ponge—who share her dream of a liberated consciousness. She weaves Susan Sontag’s examinations of cinematic disaster with the legacy of Godzilla to highlight nature as both savior and destroyer, and she writes letters to Japanese women writers whose work has taught her new ways of being. Each of these disparate parts come together to highlight the beauty in “what falls through the cracks and blurs into other moments.”Brimming with the dazzling yet fragile relationships we share with each other and with other species, these lush microcosms invite us to embrace resilience and mindfulness—and the illuminating truth of our connections.
