"David and Carmen's contribution to the culture of the capital city in Washington was absolutely extraordinary." -Mstislav Rostropovich, Former Musical Director, The National Symphony"David Kreeger was the cultural center of Washington before it was a cultural center, and to his actions and words, in great part, Washington owes its centrality."-Isaac Stern, Internationally Renowned Concert ViolinistRaised in different cultures, David Kreeger and Carmen Matanzo met in Puerto Rico while David was working as a lawyer for the Interior Department. They fell in love, married, and ultimately settled in Washington, DC. Both were accomplished amateur musicians who shared a passion for art, music, theater, and literature. In Inspiring Legacy, author Syril Levin Kline chronicles the Kreeger's lifelong patronage of the arts in the nation's capital. David's success at the helm of GEICO insurance enabled the couple to make significant donations to major national arts institutions such as the Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts while also acquiring works by many 19th and 20th century European artists including Monet, Picasso, Degas, Renoir and Van Gogh as well as masterpieces of African art. As their collection grew, even the Kreeger's home-referred to in the media as "the jewel on Foxhall Road" for its stunning Mediterranean-inspired design by architect Philip Johnson-became a gateway to the arts.In 1990, only months before his death, David was presented with the National Medal of Arts Award at the White House. Four years later, Carmen and the couple's children fulfilled David's wish that their home become The Kreeger Museum, which is open to the public and displays about 180 works. Carmen died in 2003, but the couple's enduring legacy of philanthropy and love of the arts lives on.

"The situation: real women with real and painful problems. The solution: have friends. Also, magic. The result: A thoroughly engaging, completely entertaining novel by the great Donna Levin."--Karen Joy Fowler, PEN/Faulkner award winner, Man Booker award nominee, and New York Times bestselling author of The Jane Austen Book Club Four women find humor, truth, romance, and a better path forward by deconstructing memory and emotion--and expose a wannabe cult leader along the way. Hunter is lost. Her husband left her for Angelica, her former best friend whose new hit memoir is spreading unsavory lies about Hunter. She's unemployed with no prospects, and the San Francisco flea market she's wandering on a weekday is so foggy that she literally doesn't know where she is. It's only after a helpful visit and a gift from a stranger who appears from the mist that Hunter finds her resolve. She begins a support group for women looking for new beginnings--only to have Angelica start one, too. In the next room over. One that feels very cult-y. The Talking Stick is the adventure of Hunter and the three women who join her reclamation journey. Together, they reexamine their pasts, explore their grief, addictions, parenting, and marriages, and discover that some of their most-cherished memories are romanticized versions of the truth. Meanwhile, they unearth other memories--memories that challenge how they've been living for years. And, with the help of a lawyer who prefers life on a houseboat to the pretensions of the city, Hunter unravels Angelica's scheme. The Talking Stick is a fast-paced dramedy set in the Bay Area, told with the characteristic humor of Donna Levin, an author whom Kirkus called "A witty, modern voice" and the Los Angeles Times deemed "a novelist to keep high on your reading list."

Proof of Life Lib/E: Twenty Days on the Hunt for a Missing Person in the Middle East
Daniel Levin was at his office when he got a call from an acquaintance with an urgent, cryptic request to meet in Paris. A young man had gone missing in Syria. No government, embassy, or intelligence agency would help. Could he? Would he? So begins a suspenseful, shocking, and at times brutal true story of one man's search to find a missing person in Syria over twenty tense days. Levin, a lawyer turned armed-conflict negotiator, uses his extensive contacts to chase leads throughout the Middle East, meeting with powerful sheikhs, drug lords, and sex traffickers in his pursuit of the truth. He also discovers remarkable people who retain their essential goodness and spirit in the face of adversity. In Proof of Life, Levin dives deep into a shadowy world where few have access--an underground industry of war where everything is for sale, including arms, drugs, and even people. He offers a fascinating study of how people use leverage to get what they want from one another and where no one does a favor without wanting something in return, whether it's immediately or years down the road.Proof of Life is a fast-paced thriller wrapped in a memoir, a must-read for anyone interested in power dynamics, international affairs, the Middle East, or our growing number of forever wars.
The Story of Us: How the Taylor Swift Fandom Changed Our Lives
We've had the time of our lives as Swifties, and now that story--full of joy, friendship, connection, clowning, and singing at the top of our lungs--is documented in this tribute to the fandom and the reason we're all here, Taylor Swift. We all know how it started: a teenage girl from Pennsylvania moved to Nashville and soon rose to the top of the country music charts. This is where Taylor Swift's story started in 2006, but it's also where our story, as Swifties, began. The Story of Us is a heartfelt journey through Swiftie history, capturing the evolution of a fandom that has stood the test of time. Told through the lens of personal experiences, this book chronicles the rise of a fandom that has remained fiercely loyal through every era. From calling radio stations to request "Tim McGraw," to those unforgettable moments on Tumblr when Taylor and fans felt like friends, to surviving the Ticketmaster war--we've been there. We've learned life lessons, traded friendship bracelets, mastered time zone math to tune into live streams, and created a language only another Swiftie--or Taylor herself--could understand. But beyond all of these shared moments, what truly binds us is how Taylor's lyrics feel like they were written just for us--like reflections of our own stories. This passionate and unique fandom has won awards and been intensely studied, but for the first time, fans can reminisce and celebrate what it means to be part of this life-changing community. A love letter written by a Swiftie, for Swifties, The Story of Us ensures that our story will never be forgotten.

This gentle introduction to discrete mathematics is written for first and second year math majors, especially those who intend to teach. The text began as a set of lecture notes for the discrete mathematics course at the University of Northern Colorado. This course serves both as an introduction to topics in discrete math and as the "introduction to proof" course for math majors. The course is usually taught with a large amount of student inquiry, and this text is written to help facilitate this.Four main topics are covered: counting, sequences, logic, and graph theory. Along the way proofs are introduced, including proofs by contradiction, proofs by induction, and combinatorial proofs. The book contains over 360 exercises, including 230 with solutions and 130 more involved problems suitable for homework. There are also Investigate activities throughout the text to support active, inquiry based learning. While there are many fine discrete math textbooks available, this text has the following advantages: It is written to be used in an inquiry rich course. It is written to be used in a course for future math teachers. It is open source, with low cost print editions and free electronic editions. Update: as of July 2017, this 2nd edition has been updated, correcting numerous typos and a few mathematical errors. Pagination is almost identical to the earlier printing of the 2nd edition. For a list of changes, see the book's website: http: //discretetext.oscarlevin.com

When the urban neighborhood where William Lunch Money Barnes lives becomes too rough, his mother moves his family in the middle of the school year to an all-white suburb 50 miles away. The good-natured Barnes runs into one problem: everyone, including the middle school’s basketball coach, assumes that since he is African American and from the inner city, he must be great at basketball and can save the school team’s season. Unfortunately, Barnes is not an athlete, and contrary to assumptions about black kids, he’s terrible at basketball! Trouble arises when the school discovers that Lunch Money Can’t Shoot!

Exploring Combinatorial Mathematics

Exploring Combinatorial Mathematics

This mid-level combinatorics textbook was originally written to be used in a MA level course for current secondary math teachers. Topics have been selected to illustrate larger concepts of interest to secondary teachers, and would also be appropriate for an upper-level undergraduate course for future teachers. There is an emphasis on understanding simple concepts deeply and in more than one way. Although some topics intersect secondary curriculum, most of the questions here are at a higher level. Still, the problem solving strategies and big ideas illustrated by our questions have applications to secondary mathematics. This emphasis is quite different than other mid-level discrete and combinatorics textbooks, since the goal is not to prepare readers to begin a career in research mathematics.Little is assumed about the reader's previous work in the subject, beyond a general understanding of how abstract mathematics proceeds, as well as some basic ability with mathematical proof. For the reader completely unfamiliar with these and the basic objects of mathematical study (sets and functions), background material is included in an Appendix. While the book does not address how to teach mathematics, it tries to model good pedagogical practice. Almost all of the textbook consists of Activities and Exercises that guide readers to discover mathematics for themselves. This will require quite a bit more work, both from students and instructors, but the authors strongly believe that the best way to learn mathematics is by doing mathematics. Most of all, discovering mathematics is fun.

Within today's revolving door of teaching, Artist Helen Levin forged a career as both an exhibiting painter and an innovative Educator. While many pass through an engagement with the profession, those who endure prefer to forget. Not so with Levin; she found her "voice" in the classroom too, as she gave meaning to her "day job" simply because she felt compelled to make a difference. For her students, old and young, social and artistic development went hand in hand. SMALL GIFTS: A MEMOIR OF AN ARTIST IN THE CLASSROOM celebrates the soul of teaching as a calling.

Haiku are fairly short sketches with a lot of detail between the lines. In a few lines, the author draws the beauty of nature, in which a world of feelings and emotions reigns, the smell of flowers and the murmur of a stream, the sad cries of cranes and the silence of a crying autumn, peace of mind and harmony of the world ...
