Is there an ‘ideal’ primary school curriculum?Who should decide what the curriculum is?Should teachers have autonomy over how they teach? The curriculum is the heart of what teachers teach and learners learn: effective teaching is only possible with an effective curriculum. Yet in spite of its importance, there has been a crisis in curriculum that has been caused in large part by governments assuming direct control over the curriculum, assessment, and increasingly, pedagogy. Creating the Curriculum tackles this thorny issue head on, challenging student and practising primary school teachers to think critically about past and present issues and to engage with a new wave of curriculum thinking and development. Considering curriculum construction and its impact on teaching and learning in the four countries of the UK, key issues considered include: who should decide the curriculum, its aims and its values the extent to which issues in primary education swing back and forth Subjects versus thematic organisation, stages and phases, progression, breadth and balance prescription versus teacher autonomy the key features of effective classroom practice strategies for assessing the whole curriculum how language in the classroom influences curriculum design understanding curricula in the context of children’s social and personal circumstances creativity, curriculum and the classroom.Illustrated throughout with strategies and case studies from the classroom, Creating the Curriculum accessibly links the latest research and evidence with concrete examples of good practice. It is a timely exploration of what makes an effective and meanginful curriculum and how teachers can bring new relevance, motivation and powerful values to what they teach.

When you're working with preverbal children on the autism spectrum, you need a complete toolbox of highly effective strategies to expand their communication skills. Add Rapid Motor Imitation Antecedent Training (RMIA) , and you'll have one of the most promising interventions for helping young children say their first words. A discrete trial intervention approach for preschoolers with autism who have severe language delays, RMIA is a crucial step on the path to improved communication function. It's an easy-to-use method: children imitate a rapid series of simple motor actions and are then asked to imitate a word. The momentum they build by performing the easy motor actions helps them comply with the more difficult task of word production. A must for SLPs and autism specialists, RMIA is an ideal addition to your current lineup of strategies and supports: Experimentally tested at the Yale Child Study Centre, one of the nation's top autism treatment centres. Originally developed since 2002 at Teachers College, Columbia University and proven effective for helping young children develop functional speech. Perfect to use in tandem with naturalistic interventions like Parent Responsiveness Training. Focused specifically on initial imitation of words—a critical step toward using language spontaneously. Quick and easy to implement—RMIA should be administered in short, frequent doses, making it an easy fit with your everyday practices. The only product available that shows SLPs and autism specialists how to conduct RMIA, this manual-and-CD set gives you everything you need for successful implementation. You'll get complete, practical guidance in the accessible how-to manual, and the CD-ROM gives you a full hour of explicit demonstration videos that show case studies of RMIA in action. You'll also get printable data collection forms to help organise RMIA sessions and assist in data keeping (both blank forms and completed samples). A key component of your comprehensive intervention program for social communication, RMIA will help young preverbal children overcome the hurdles to saying their first words—and start making real progress toward communicative competence.

Trauma-informed care is emerging as a critical component of pediatric best practices. With this new practical guide, pediatricians and other child health professionals will learn to identify, evaluate, and treat children and families affected by trauma and adversity when they present at the office. In addition to instruction for acute, hands-on care, the cohesive approach offered in this guide also lays out a framework and concrete steps to transform practices into ones that are trauma-sensitive and can provide the best, most impactful care to all patients.Childhood Trauma and Resilience: A Practical Guide includes mnemonics, charts, tables, and numerous case studies to reinforce learning, as well as timely information on physician burnout and secondary traumatic stress. More than 20 reproducible handouts on topics such as attachment, cultural connections, and promoting resilience, will help pediatricians engage with parents on these important related topics and focus on the family factors that can help prevent and mitigate the effects of trauma.

Genome-editing methods are becoming routine tools for molecular and cell biologists. Such tools include ZFNs, CRISPR, megaTALs and TALENs. These tools are revolutionizing the creation of precisely manipulated genomes to modify the characteristics of organisms or cells. Additionally, gene drives have altered the way we understand inheritance laws. They give us the ability to have total control of the inheritance of traits of choice and importance. This succinct volume summarizes the history, principles and applications – as well as the advantages and disadvantages – of each of these tools and various kinds of gene drives. The book is part of a program to produce books helpful to students and faculties of science at colleges and universities. This volume in the Pocket Guides to Biomedical Sciences series will help demystify these technologies. The book fills the gap between established conventional methods and the novel and exciting newly introduced tools of genome editing and gene drives. It will help young scientists understand the emerging genome-editing tools and gene drives, thereby promoting related research and adoption.Key Features Extensively reviews the current genome-editing tools and gene drives Clarifies the targeting mechanisms and specificity of genome-editing tools Details many different types of natural and synthetic gene drives Highlights concerns with gene drives and genome-editing toolsRelated TitlesBrown, T. Vi vet alla vad lärande är.

Growing out of the collaborative research of an American ethnomusicologist and Zimbabwean musician, Paul F. Berliner and Cosmas Magaya’s Mbira’s Restless Dance documents the repertory for a keyboard instrument known generally as mbira. At the heart of this work lies the analysis of the improvisatory processes that propel mbira music’s magnificent creativity.Mbira’s Restless Dance is written to be played. This two-volume, spiral-bound set features musical transcriptions of thirty-nine compositions and variations, annotated with the master player’s advice on technique and performance, his notes and observations, and commentary by Berliner. Enhanced with extensive website audiovisuals, Mbira’s Restless Dance is in effect a series of masterclasses with Magaya, suitable for experienced mbira players and those learning the fundamentals. Together with Berliner's The Art of Mbira, in which he provides an indispensable historical and cultural guide to mbira in a changing world, Mbira's Restless Dance breaks new ground in the depth and specificity of its exploration of an African musical tradition, and in the entwining of the authors’ collaborative voices. It is a testament to the powerful relationship between music and social life—and the rewards of lifelong musical study, performance, and friendship.

For her time, Mira Lloyd Dock was an exceptional woman: a university-trained botanist, lecturer, women’s club leader, activist in the City Beautiful movement, and public official—the first woman to be appointed to Pennsylvania’s state government. In her twelve years on the Pennsylvania Forest Commission, she allied with the likes of J. T. Rothrock, Gifford Pinchot, and Dietrich Brandis to help bring about a new era in American forestry. She was also an integral force in founding and fostering the Pennsylvania State Forest Academy in Mont Alto, which produced generations of Pennsylvania foresters before becoming Penn State's Mont Alto campus. Though much has been written about her male counterparts, Mira Lloyd Dock and the Progressive Era Conservation Movement is the first book dedicated to Mira Lloyd Dock and her work. Susan Rimby weaves these layers of Dock’s story together with the greater historical context of the era to create a vivid and accessible picture of Progressive Era conservation in the eastern United States and Dock’s important role and legacy in that movement.
