Oral Literature of the Maasai

Oral Literature of the Maasai

Oral Literature of the Maasai offers an extensive collection of types of oral literature: oral narratives; proverbs; riddles; and a variety of songs for different occasions. The versions in this book were collected by the author from a specific Maasai community in Kajiado County of Kenya. The author listened to many of the narratives and participated in many proverb and riddle telling sessions as she grew up in her Ilbissil village of Kajiado Central Sub-county. However, she recorded most of the examples of oral literature in the early seventies with the help of her mother, who performed the role of the oral artist. Many songs were recorded from live performances. The examples ring with individuality, while also revealing a comprehensive way of life of a people. The images in the literature reveal the concrete life of the Maasai - people living closely with their livestock and engaged in constant struggle with the environment. But like all important literature, the materials here ultimately reveal a people with its moral and spiritual concerns, grappling with questions of human values and relations, struggling for a better social order. This book recommends itself to the general reader. However, the book is more than this: it includes stimulating discussions of examples, as well as review questions and exercises. The book is highly recommended to students of oral literature at secondary school level and at the university.

This book is both interesting and original. It uses a compilation of some Congolese Traditional Tales for teaching English by having recourse to modern teaching standards. These tales belong to the oral tradition: they have been transmitted from mouth to mouth. Parents or adults usually tell them to children in the evenings around a fire or under a starry blue sky. These tales have been reduced to the rank of simple folklore for a long time. But, thanks to this book, they have come out of darkness, have come to light, have been given their real value and can be let known to a large audience. This book shows that these tales are not told aimlessly; they have an educational objective in the sense that they inculcate in children's minds values and principles which will permit them to get along well with the members of their communities and teach them to be cautious, shrewd and wise enough to cope successfully with life's challenges.

Thousands of years ago, before systems of writing existed, every civilization passed on knowledge through storytelling. This is called the oral tradition. Some tales were fiction, but some were true history. Today, historians recognize that history books often lack some crucial details about important events, details that can be properly captured through the accounts of people who were actually there. This book, which supports elementary social studies curricula, focuses on oral histories, including what they are, why they're essential to the historical record, and how readers can record them for themselves.
Oral Health by Using Probiotic Products
One of the most prevalent and important health problems in the world is periodontal and plaque-related diseases for which antibiotic drugs with their associated side effects are used as treatment. With increasing resistance to antibiotics and a desire from the general public for "natural" therapies, there is a need to minimize antibiotic use and develop new treatments for oral diseases without antimicrobial agents. Probiotics are viable microorganisms that provide a health benefit to the host when administered in adequate amounts; studies show that probiotics have the potential to modify the oral microbiota and decrease the colony-forming unit counts of the oral pathogens being investigated to prevent or treat oral diseases, such as dental caries and the periodontal diseases. In addition, the identification of specific strains with probiotic activity is required for any oral infectious disease to determine the exact dose, the time of treatment, and the ideal vehicle.
Oral Literature of Iranian Languages: Kurdish, Pashto, Balochi, Ossetic; Persian and Tajik: Companion Volume II
A new History of Persian Literature in 18 Volumes. Persian literature is the jewel in the crown of Persian culture. It has profoundly influenced the literatures of Ottoman Turkey, Muslim India and Turkic Central Asia and been a source of inspiration for Goethe, Emerson, Matthew Arnold and Jorge Luis Borges among others. Yet Persian literature has never received the attention it truly deserves. A History of Persian Literature answers this need and offers a new, comprehensive and detailed history of its subject. This 18-volume, authoritative survey reflects the stature and significance of Persian literature as the single most important accomplishment of the Iranian experience. It includes extensive, revealing examples with contributions by prominent scholars who bring a fresh critical approach to bear on this important topic. This companion volume deals with two of the most under-researched areas of study in the Modern Iranian field: the Persian oral and popular literature of Iran, Tajikistan and Persian-speaking Afghanistan on the one hand; and the written and oral literatures of the Kurds, Pashtuns, Baloch and Ossetians on the other.
