In the 1920s, a young American - Paul Outerbridge (1896-1958) burst onto the photographic art scene with images that were visually fresh, technically adept, and decidedly Modernist. Not only did he re-invigorate the photographic art of the period, he also applied his talent for composition to the commercial world, introducing an artist's sensibilities to advertisements for everything from men's haberdashery to JELL-O, for magazines such as "Vogue" and "Vanity Fair". An early master of the complex carbo colour process, "Outerbridge" also photographed nudes in poses that skirted the limits of propriety at the time. "Paul Outerbridge: Command Performance" is a visually stunning volume that brings together one hundred photographs from the whole of Outerbridge's career, including his Cubist still-life images, commercial, and nude photography. This is a visually stunning celebration of the pioneering work of photographer Paul Outerbridge.
Paul Celan is one the twentieth century's most essential poets, and twenty-two years after its publication, Poems of Paul Celan continues to be the single truest access for English-speakers to this poet's work. This new edition adds ten more poems and a significant essay, "On Translating Celan" by Michael Hamburger.
"Paul Strand is universally acclaimed as a master. His pictures rank highly among the most often reproduced masterworks of photography and have an honored place within the canon of modern art as such. People viewing his work for the first or the hundredth time find themselves captivated within a visual domain of extraordinary immediacy and freshness, not just in textures, shapes, and forms but in subtleties which make for resonating coherences within and among images."--Alan Trachtenberg, author of" Reading American Photographs: Images as History, Mathew Brady to Walker Evans," excerpted from the" Introduction" "In Strand's pictures, we find the work of a quiet but intense man who transmuted the real into the ideal, "the ordinary in man and the transitory in nature converted into eternal symbols.""--Estelle Jussim, author of "Slave to Beauty: The Eccentric Life and Controversial Career of F. Holland Day, Photographer, Publisher, Aesthete," from her essay A visionary artist of the twentieth century, Paul Strand was much more than a gifted imagemaker. Throughout his long and productive life which ended in 1976, Strand was a leading advocate of photography as a fine art and a political activist deeply committed to social issues. He was an innovative filmmaker and a pioneer in developing photography books that combined images with words. To celebrate the centenary of Paul Strand's birth, an international team of scholars and writers, many of whom knew or worked with Strand, has produced a volume of essays and meditations on his life and work. Alan Trachtenberg, professor of English and American Studies at Yale University, provides the insightful introduction. Gloria Naylor, Russell Banks, Jim Harrison, Carolyn Forch , Jerome Liebling, Charles Simic, and Reynolds Price respond, each uniquely, to individual photographs. Naomi Rosenblum, Jan-Christopher Horak, Robert Adams, Milton Brown, Richard Benson, Estelle Jussim, and Anne Tucker, among others, offer lively scholarship and comment. Jussim discusses Strand's aesthetic ideals; Horak contributes an evaluation of the motion picture "Manhatta," produced in 1921 by Paul Strand and Charles Sheeler; Benson writes from personal experience about Strand's darkroom practices; and internationally-regarded photographic-historian Naomi Rosenblum offers a fresh account of Strand's early development. Drawing on letters, journals, interviews, and previously unpublished writings, these thoughtful essays span Strands lifetime, from his remarkable debut in Alfred Stieglitz's periodical, "Camera Work," to his travels in the American Southwest and in Mexico, and his final years in Europe and Africa. These essays are an unsurpassed chronicle of artistic genius and a vital addition to the library of every serious photographer, Strand aficionado, cultural historian, and print collector. Published in the 100th anniversary of Paul Strand's birth. Robert Adams, William Alexander, Russell Banks, Richard Benson, Milton W. This publication marks the bicentenary of Delaroche's death. It represents an in-depth study of many of his most famous paintings, which form part of the Wallace Collection. These include the historical scenes "The Princes in the Tower" and the "Execution of Lady Jane Grey".

In this compendium of six Bible talks, first broadcast on Premier Christian Radio in June and July 2000, various members of the "Truth for Today" team consider in a practical way the message of Paul's letter to the Christians in the church at Colossae. Each speaker expounded their allotted passage as the Holy Spirit directed. Some took a verse-by-verse approach, while others a more thematic one. In bringing this collection together, the individual approaches have been retained; but, to enable the book to be used for both devotional and reference purposes, the verses under consideration are clearly indicated. George Stevens provides an overall introduction to the letter, followed by a look at the beginning of the first chapter, culminating with the great statement that Christ is pre-eminent in everything. Douglas Pettman explores the subject of reconciliation, and the secret of the Church and its future with its Head. Ernie Brown opens up the simplicity of the Christian message: nothing but Christ is necessary, for Christ is everything. This has practical implications, and George Bell looks at the reality of what it means when Paul writes that Christ is our life.Gordon Kell explores the way in which service for Christ is worked out in our families and occupations. Finally, David Anderson closes the studies, underlining the way in which prayer is necessary to under-pin actions and speech which testify that Christ is, indeed, everything.

cd
Paul Bowles reads this classic suite of Moroccan kif stories that he recorded in Tangier, Morocco, in the Fall of 1978. Previously released as a 2 LP recording in 1981, and long sold out, these stories are now available again in this audiobook format. Bowles' accompanying essay for this recording is printed in the included booklet. It sets forth the method of writing employed in these stories - the selection of arbitrary incidents and phenomena factored into the kif-smoker's imperium of sensibility.
This concise book examines the interaction between earlier and other writers, painters (and anthropologists) and Morocco, and then examines the effects of thisculture and its magical practices upon the person, psyche and writings of PaulBowles.Interwoven into this work is a memoir, the author's friendship with Bowles, his visits to Tangier, residence there, correspondence with the writer, thelessons which were encoded in almost all his interactions with Bowles. The fulcrum upon which this book rests is to ask a question, the influence ofthe magical practices of Morocco upon Bowles, a question which could not belegitimately asked of any other American writer.

Paul Fryer: Don't Be So

Damien Hirst provides the illustrations for Paul Fryer's first collection of poems, the two minds meeting in the middle as they survey their lives and those of their fellow men and women with an acute distillation of manners, cultures and prejudices. Drinking, fooling with toxic substances, loving and losing and loving again - the components of life in its fullness and beguiling ordinariness. This is Paul Fryer's first collection of poems, and it has been illustrated with keen insight by Damien Hirst. Together they have produced a beautiful diatribe against current complacencies that, remarkably, also shows a precious tolerance and love for their fellow men and women. The novelist and painter Harland Miller has written the foreword.Hirst and Fryer have concocted an acute distillation of manners, cultures and prejudices, a polemic even, that reflects a light suffused with a powerful disinterest, a disturbing sine qua non.Drinking, fooling with toxic substances, loving and losing and loving again, railing against authority, sinking one's head in one's hands at the ordinariness of life's decisions, these are but part of Don't Be So...It is also, remarkably, a book of love and curious humility. Paul Fryer deconstructs accepted conceits and replaces them with commonplace sensibilities that make you wonder how you ever got dressed in the morning, let alone go out in the world."I've had tougher dilemmas," Fryer says. "But I do find it a bit embarrassing to talk about the writing of poems. I remember my first effort at primary school; I was nine. It was a cheerful composition entitled 'The End Of The World'. Funnily enough I still know it by heart."
