Im Fruhjahr des Jahres 1985 erschien auf dem deutschen Buchmarkt ein Titel, der schnell zu einem Bestseller werden sollte - und dies nicht nur in Deutschland. Kaum ein Werk der deutschsprachigen Gegenwartsliteratur war so erfolgreich wie Patrick Suskinds "Das Parfum" und kaum ein anderes Werk sollte in so viele Sprachen ubersetzt werden. Es stand 316 Wochen in den Bestsellerlisten und wurde von Kritikern fast einstimmig gefeiert. Wohl auch, weil es dem Autor mit seinem Werk gelungen ist, sowohl ein gebildetes Leserpublikum, als auch den Laienleser anzusprechen. Im Mittelpunkt des Werkes steht, wie in anderen Werken Suskinds auch, die Person eines Sonderlings, dessen Umweltwahrnehmung stark defizitar auf die Wahrnehmung von Geruchsreizen beschrankt ist und der isoliert von der Gesellschaft seinen Platz in ihr sucht. In der vorliegenden Arbeit wird der historische Epochenbezug des Werkes untersucht und dabei werden insbesondere die Bezuge des Textes zur Epoche der Aufklarung betrachtet.
