Book Synopsis The last day of school at Apple Valley Elementary could mark the end of Mrs. Kennedy's 27-year teaching career, if she finds the rest of the money she needs to buy her dream house. When former student Brian Kelly surprises her with a $10,000 check, confidence is high-until the gift turns up missing hours before the down payment is due. Fifth-grader Chase Manning needs to work quickly to save the day for his favorite teacher. Suspense, drama, and excitement overflow from the pages of this single-day, real-time mystery thriller. About the Chase Manning Mystery Series The Chase Manning Mystery Series features single-day, real-time thrillers that occur on an elementary school campus. Written for readers 8-12 years of age by National Board Certified Teacher Steve Reifman, the series launched with the award-winning Chase Against Time, in which fifth grader Chase Manning must investigate the mysterious disappearance of the cello that the school plans to auction off to save its prestigious music program. The book and its sequels, Chase for Home and Chase Under Pressure, have enjoyed rave reviews from children, parents, and teachers. Young readers love the books' fast-paced, action-packed format while parents and teachers appreciate the kid-friendly tone and content. Chase is now back in the eagerly anticipated fourth installment, Chase to the Finish. Note for Elementary School Teachers and Parents Chase Against Time, Chase for Home, Chase Under Pressure, and Chase to the Finish are Level Q on the Fountas & Pinnell scale. All four books are ideally suited to be used as read alouds and mentor texts during Reading Workshop units on mystery and "edge-of-seat" fiction because they include numerous examples of end-of-chapter cliffhangers, red herrings, suspects, motives, and other important mystery elements. If you are interested in teaching children how to craft their own mysteries, check out Steve's e-book, The Ultimate Mystery Writing Guide for Kids.

These poems were written long before Liane began to have memory problems. They were written over a span of 30 or so years when she was a PhD student, a Principal Investigator in basic biomedical research, an administrator and faculty member at Harvard Medical School, an author and consultant on writing grant Proposals. At the same time she found time to be a mother of two children, and an organizer. She organized a Women's Science Network in the Boston area to help other woman who also have felt difficulty in advancing their careers. Many of the poems in this book are dark, but they express the yearning of a better world. Although at this time Liane has Alzheimer's and is not be able to read these poems, I am sure that she would be happy to know that she has reached readers who have similar thoughts. S. S. This volume furthers discourse and understanding about the complex phenomenon we know as play. As with volume one, Diversions and Divergences in Fields of Play, Reifel's purpose is to provide a forum for new thinking about play in humans and animals … across various cultural, social, and activity settings (1998, p. xi). Necessarily, this effort cuts across various disciplines, including biology, anthropology, history, psychology, education, leisure studies, sociology, and any field in which play theories contribute. Play Contexts Revisited is comprised of sixteen contributions organized in five sections. Each section flushes out specific types of play, such as Stories of Adult's Play. Comparative contributions focus on play of other cultures and even other species. Volume two of Play & Culture Studies enriches the series with innovative articles about the many aspects and examples of play.

Globalization, Hegemony and Power
This book explores the closely related dynamics of globalization, hegemony and resistance movements in the modern world. Complimented by dramatic explorations of the new trans-border resistance movements, from the contemporary labor movement to the resurgence of nationalism, this book moves beyond the traditional focus on cycles of rise and decline of great powers to asses the pressing questions at the intersection of contemporary globalizations and hegemonic rise, decline and resurgence of civilizations. Moreover, the book provides a compelling analysis of the role of contemporary globalization in the resurgence of Islamic activism across the globe and the challenges this poses for traditional theories of modernity and global social movements. Contributors: Immanuel Wallerstein, Joachim Rennstich, William Robinson, Jeffrey Kentor, AMy Holmes, Kathleen Schwartzman, Edna Bonacich, Terry Boswell, Paul M. Lubeck & Thomas Reifer, Lauren Langman & Douglas Morris.

Global Crises and the Challenges of the 21st Century
Despite prognostications of the "end of history," the 21st century has posed new challenges and a host of global crises. This book takes up the current global economic crisis in relation to new and changing dynamics of territory, authority, and rights in today's global system. The authors explore long simmering conflicts in comparative perspective, including settler colonialism in South Africa, Northern Ireland and Israel/Palestine. They discuss indigenous struggles against environmental land grabs and related destruction of indigenous lands by the US nuclear weapons complex. The book uniquely considers the sacred in the context of the global system, including struggles of Latina/o farm workers in the U.S. for social justice and for change in the Catholic Church. Other chapters examine questions of civilizations and identity in the contemporary global system, as well as the role of world-regions.
