How long can they pretend Sam is just dressing up in a dog costume for charity? Are her chances of winning the big dance competition scuppered? What’s going on behind closed doors at Roger Fitzmaurice’s dog-biscuit factory? And, um, why has Sam suddenly started to chew on slippers and bark at the moon?
Sam Herman

Sam Herman

Marquess of Queensberry

Sam Herman (1936-2020) stands at the very centre of the development of the international Studio Glass Movement. He was not only present for the birth of the Movement in the United States, but was its founding father in Great Britain and Australia. This book is the first to deal directly with the genesis of the Movement and the pioneering work of Herman within it, while also shedding light on his wider practice in sculpture and painting. The son of Polish immigrants, Mexican by birth, and brought up in the tougher New York boroughs, Herman travelled to London in the mid-1960s and went on to head up the Glass Department at the Royal College of Art. From there he inspired a generation of artists, created revolutionary techniques and was instrumental in the development of colour and texture in blown glass. For art historians, collectors and aficionados of glass, this book provides a welcome and comprehensive evaluation of Herman’s position within the Studio Glass Movement, the history of glass art, as well as the wider context of modern British art. While discussion of his sculpture and painting reveal further dimensions to Herman's ongoing, and indefatigable, explorations in form, composition and colour.

Sam Mendes at the Donmar Warehouse

Sam Mendes at the Donmar Warehouse

Wolf Matt

Nick Hern Books
2002
nidottu
The story of ten star-studded years at London's theatrical powerhouse, told from the perspective of Sam Mendes, the young unknown who made it happen. Sam Mendes's Donmar Warehouse is where Nicole Kidman appeared naked in The Blue Room, where Gwyneth Paltrow recently starred in the Pulitzer Prize-winning Proof, where Stephen Sondheim and Tom Stoppard turn up regularly to see stunning revivals of their work, and from where show after show transfers to the West End and often, like Cabaret, on to Broadway, where it is still running. In October 2002 the Donmar celebrates its tenth anniversary. Published to mark the occasion, Sam Mendes at the Donmar Warehouse tells the story of those extraordinary years with the no-holds-barred co-operation of all involved - and particularly Mendes himself. It takes us on a thematic journey, looking at the various musicals staged there, the directors who worked there, the stars who played there, but also the flops that flopped there. Packed with photos, cast lists, and frank opinions, it is both a celebration and a tell-all account of those miraculous years - which come to an end in October 2002 when Sam Mendes hands over the reins to the new man, Michael Grandage.
Sam Bell Maxey and the Confederate Indians
General Maxey, dignified, articulate, and confident, arrives in Indian Territory in 1863 to assume command of a diverse and motley army of Indians. The troops are in disarray; they are suspicious of tribal alliances, weakened from malnutrition, their crops have been pillaged, and they are discouraged by a series of battlefield setbacks at the hands of the Union Army invading from Kansas. Maxey calls upon all of his leadership and administrative skills and his insight into Indian culture to win the confidence and loyalty of these soldiers. Desperately he fights to secure badly needed munitions and provisions from the Confederate bureaucracy, which is focused on the plight of its eastern armies. All the while he struggles with his own field commander, the able and ambitious Douglas Cooper, friend of Jefferson Davis, who is eager to supplant him. Yet, Maxey perseveres and succeeds in molding this "army without infantry" into an effective fighting force that plays an important role in the Red River and Arkansas Campaigns and ultimately helps prevent a Union invasion of north Texas. A little known story, dramatically told by a distinguished author.
Sam Gilliam: Sewing Fields

Sam Gilliam: Sewing Fields

Annie Fletcher

Irish Museum Of Modern Art

Dedicated to Gilliam's late-career sewn and collaged fabric works, this colorful catalog embraces the artist's restless creativity and visionary approach to abstraction A pioneering artist who redefined the boundaries of painting, Sam Gilliam (1933–2022) transformed the medium with his radical approach to color, material and space. Sewing Fields focuses on a lesser-known yet crucial period in Gilliam's later career: that of his sewn and collaged works. His residency at the Ballinglen Arts Foundation in 1993 reshaped his artistic practice. Far from his Washington, DC, studio, Gilliam embraced new materials, working with pre-stained fabrics that he shipped to Ireland, cutting and layering them into sculptural compositions. A collaboration with a local dressmaker further expanded his process, reinforcing his innovative fusion of painting and textile techniques. Sewing Fields brings these groundbreaking works back to the Irish Museum of Modern Art, nearly 50 years after Gilliam's first Dublin exhibition, positioning him within a broader transatlantic dialogue on abstraction.
