William Scott of Fairfield County, South Carolina and His Descendents
In 1790, when George Scott, Revolutionary Soldier, dictated his last will and testament leaving a widow Elizabeth, a daughter Margaret and a son William, little could he have realized that by 1987, hundreds of his descendents would be scattered all over the United States.William Scott of Fairfield County, South Carolina, was born about 1760 and died in 1805. Some entries also include the name of the spouse's parent(s), place of marriage, place(s) of residence, cause of death, place of burial, and/or biographical tidbits. The listing of children generally provides the date of birth, name of spouse and number of children.Chapters include: George Scott, William Scott, John W. Scott, Elizabeth Scott Cross, Major Scott, George Scott, Henry Scott, William Scott Jr., Major Adkins Scott, Henry William Scott, Samuel B. Scott, Ann Scott Bruce, Benjamin Scott, John W. Scott, Daniel Jackson Scott, Sarah Scott Carman (Carmon), James Scott, Related Families (Geter/Jeter and Holmes), and Marriages and Land Records. Walter Scott

Walter Scott

Jane Millgate

University of Toronto Press
1987

Between 1814 and 1819 Walter Scott published a remarkable sequence of eight historical and regional novels, beginning with Waverley and culminating in The Bride of Lammermoor and A Legend of Montrose. In the process he made the Author of Waverley into the most successful and famous novelist in the world; by chooseing to remain anonymous, however, Scott deliberately separated this new achievement from the fame he had already gained as editor and poet. This study of the first and major phase of Scott's career as a novelist reconsiders his act of secession from his own literary past and examines the interconnections between Scott the antiquarian and editor, Scott the romantic poet, and Scott the novelist.

The aim in this edition of SCOTT'S POEMS has been to give a correct text, with such portions of Scott's notes as are likely to be useful or interesting to the general reader, and with fuller and better pictorial illustrations than are to be found in any former edition. The volume contains all the poems (not the plays, which are seldom, if ever, read nowadays, unless as mere literary curiosities), with the exception of a few bits of personal or occasional verse which Scott himself would never have printed, and which are not worth preserving. The original contributions to the Border Minstrelsy are included, except Scott's portion of Thomas the Rhymer (the Third Part only), which could not well be separated from the rest Of the Songs scattered through the novels and plays, the best of such as are comparatively independent of the context are given, together with all the poetical mottoes written by Scott himself for the heading of chapters.

F.Scott Fitzgerald in the Twenty-first Century

F.Scott Fitzgerald is read and studied all over the world and his works continue to elicit spirited responses. This collection grew out of the F.Scott Fitzgerald conference that convened in Princeton at the centennial of this author's birth. Bringing together dozens of scholars and commentators, the conference and the book celebrate the growing legacy of Fitzgeralds's art. The subjects of these 19 essays reflect the contributors' wish to shine new light on less-frequently discussed aspects of Fitzgerald's work. Topics include Fitzgerald's Princeton influences and his expression of catholic romanticism; his treatments of youth culture, the devil, and waste, parallels in the work of Mencken, Cather, and Murakami; and the ways gender, pastoral mode, humour, and the Civil War are variously presented in his work. One illustrated summary examines Fitzgerald's effect on popular culture through his appearance in the comics. Two broad overviews - one on Fitzgerald's career and another on the final developments in the author's style - round out the collection.

Paul Scott's Philosophy of Place(s)

This revisionist study of the novels of Paul Scott breaks new ground in literary and postcolonial discourse. Using previously unpublished archival materials and contemporary place theory as fulcrums to examine Scott's narrative method, Janis E. Haswell examines what she calls Scott's narrative of relationality - his mastery of multiple perspective and juxtaposition of images, characters, sites, and events. This book shows how the theme of connection valorizes the singular self and the cohesive power of life-narratives in the Raj Quartet and earlier works. Scott's philosophy of place(s) relates both to England's imperial past and, more broadly, to contemporary views of self and identity.

"Nathan Scott's Literary Criticism and Fundamental Theology" reexamines the pioneering contribution of Nathan A. Scott, Jr. to the field of theology and literature. It both recalls Scott's achievement and suggests its continuing value by focusing on the question of Scott's method. Rather than following the traditional interpretation of Scott as a literary critic employing Paul Tillich's theology of culture, this book proposes that Scott's work is best understood as a form of fundamental theology. In doing so, it suggests that Scott's work models ways in which literary texts may be appropriately incorporated into theological discourse.

The definitive monograph on Jeremy Scott, one of the most creative and influential American designers working in fashion today. Jeremy Scott is an American designer whose sensibility has brought elements of humour, rebellion, and fantasy to the elevated culture of couture-from his earliest collections in Paris to the outrageous runway shows in recent years that led the New York Times to call him fashion's last rebel. Creative, original, and iconic, Scott is the voice of his generation, his work a colourful marriage of the ubiquity of cultural reference with the refinement of high fashion. Since the late 1990s-when he twice won the Venus de la Mode Award for Best New Designer-Scott has retained his bright and extravagant style while honing his vision to take each collection in a new and startling direction. Referred to by Karl Lagerfeld as the only designer worthy of taking over at Chanel, Scott also dresses the icons of pop, from Madonna to Rihanna, and alongside his eponymous collections he is creative director of Moschino and designs streetwear for Adidas. This book reflects all the style of Jeremy Scott's world, from snapshots of fittings in his studio to Polaroids taken backstage at shows and editorial work from Inez and Vinoodh, Steven Meisel, Ellen von Unwerth, and Terry Richardson, among others. With an introduction by Jeffrey Deitch, this is a lavish survey of one of today's most iconic designers.
Winfield Scott and the Profession of Arms

Winfield Scott and the Profession of Arms

Allan Peskin

Winfield Scott (1786-1866) was arguably the premier soldier of his era. More than any other, he was responsible for the professionalization of the U.S. Army during his long career (1807-61). He served as general in the War of 1812 and wisdom and caution in his direction of the Mexico campaign. Author Allan Peskin's research in the National Archives unearthed records from the War Department that support his portrayal of General Scott as a forward-looking managerial officer who accurately foresaw the coming of dramatic changes in technology and business principles for the military. Peskin also examines Scott's role in the political arena during the 1850s and his unsuccessful bid for the presidency as the nominee of the Whig party. Winfield Scott and the Profession of Arms is a balanced and thorough biography of this long-neglected military figure. Scholars and military historians will welcome its significant contributions to literature.

The Initiate presents the unfolding story of the fascinating and mysterious personality known as Justin Moreward Haig. The story is of absorbing interest to students of the spiritual path because they learn that Mahatmas and Masters do not live in seclusion, nor are they necessarily wellknown teachers and authorities. The spiritual path can be found by people of diverse nationalities and races. Here we learn the veiled history of an Adept who lived and worked within his community, hiding his true identity for the convincing reason discussed in this book. Also included are excerpts from the discourse of the author's Master, in which some of the most profound truths are stated in an original and compelling manner.
