Water Voices

Water Voices

Sheldon H Clark

In Water Voices, author Sheldon Clark presents a moving series of spiritual reflections grouped together under three general themes: Calm, Storm, and Peace. Readers will find both insight and reassurance in these meditations and remembrances, spanning the lifespan from birth to final years. Evocative illustrations enhance the meaning of the poems and prayers included in the book.A word from the author: In the summer of 1958, my brother and I rode horseback into the hill ring surrounding a cattle ranch near Gunnison, Colorado. We followed a creek to its spring, dismounted, and we and our horses refreshed ourselves with cool clear water. We felt history flowing down our throats. We felt at one with the eternal source sending cleansing blood through our veins. We gave thanks for this natural baptism. I could only wish that people everywhere could give thanks for the unmerited gift of pure water. Water voices are heard in varieties of music from classical, gospel, country and western, folk, easy listening, and rock. Water voices are seen in drawings, paintings, and photography, as representative, abstract, and mood inspiring. Water voices in literature appeal to the five senses and express inner thoughts. Words are the instruments used to articulate passionate love, reflect on grief, loss, danger, and death, and are intentionally chosen to provoke a response. Water voices are as constant as sunrise and sunset. They possess character. They are as soothing as divine mercy. They are as gentle as the lion that lies down with the lamb, as violent as unbridled war and storms at sea, as miraculous as spiritual conversion, as nourishing as Mother Earth, and as mysterious as love. In listening to water voices, we hear the divine replenishing Creation, itself. The narrative poems in Water Voices were inspired to acknowledge each person's experience as they bring their welcoming capabilities to our essential source of existence. In these uncertain times of climate change, it is incumbent upon humanity to listen to water voices as friendly sounds ever so subtly appealing for human help to achieve the goals of balance, conservation, restorative justice, and mutually assured survival.

Harmonising Copyright Law and Dealing with Dissonance

Harmonising Copyright Law and Dealing with Dissonance

This insightful study explores the constitutional, institutional, and cultural barriers to harmonisation of the copyright laws of the United States and the European Union. It considers these matters in the real world transnational environment in which copyright law operates and suggests that the reality transcends the differences, offering a framework for meaningful harmonisation. The authors examine in detail and offer a critique of the sporadic and historic attempts at one or another form of harmonisation, via treaty and otherwise, from the creation of a minimal standards regime to the proliferation of substantive treaties. They similarly examine the respective competencies of the US and the EU to adopt a transnational regime, and propose a workable framework consistent with these competencies.Offering a critical analysis of treaties and other prior attempts at forms of harmonization, this book will have special appeal to governmental and nongovernmental individuals involved in the ongoing efforts of WIPO and the WTO, as well as copyright and intellectual property practitioners with internationally oriented practices.

Is Sherlock Holmes really as rational as he seems? He talks about the importance of reasoning and logic, but why then does he sometimes seem like a "strange Buddha"? On the other hand, why in The Sign of the Four does Watson smash a Buddha? What is going on in The Sign of the Four, that strange tale of Empire? What is going on in all the original sixty stories in "the canon"? In this study of the stories, Sheldon Goldfarb explores questions like these, from the significance of the eggs in "Thor Bridge" to the reason Watson keeps leaving Holmes for an insubstantial wife. What meanings lurk beneath the surface of these detective stories? Why is there an obsession with Napoleon in this story or an article on free trade in this other? Can we find answers to these questions? Perhaps. In any case, in this collection of essays (or "Musings") on each of the 60 stories, Dr. Goldfarb, an award-nominated mystery writer himself and the holder of a PhD in English literature, light-heartedly tries out a variety of perspectives, allowing readers to come to their own conclusions about such matters as the nature of the angel in "A Case of Identity" or the reason Holmes abandons his magnifying glass for binoculars in "Silver Blaze." Who brings binoculars to a horse race? Indeed.

Ex-boxer, former inmate, and ex-hoodlum Lon Caplain was wrongfully convicted of armed robbery by a predominantly white judge and jury and served a term in harsh Booskaloo State Prison. The court later discovered that he did not commit the crime, and he was released. But this injustice, the cruel ghetto and prison life all loaded with racism and oppression, has left Lon an angry, embittered, frustrated, and mean black man. With raging hate in his heart and a reckless mindset, Lon is violent and crime-prone against the black community and geared to return to the brutal thuggery of his youth. This fate is derailed when he becomes "down with it" or "down" (which, in African-American ghetto slang, means "greatly inspired, ready, willing, bold and able with all his heart") to help some community activists and their youth center. Lon soon becomes their leader and finds life-saving humanity, self-worth, purpose, and redemption amid a police manhunt for a vicious wanted felon who brutalized and raped several girls and a massive destructive earthquake in 1982 south central Los Angeles.

This is the first comprehensive book on Venetian mosaics of the nineteenth century. It illustrates work by both the Salviati Company and the Venice and Murano Glass and Mosaic Company. A carefully researched work, Venetian Glass Mosaics addresses the revival of the art of Venetian mosaic making in the mid-nineteenth century and discusses the complicity of both Antonio Salviati and Sir Austen Henry Layard in that revival. It is a comprehensive work, illustrating Salviati's earliest surviving mosaics, the 1860 mosaic decoration of the Royal Mausoleum at Frogmore and continuing through his company's last commission, the Stanford Memorial Church in Palo Alto, California. The recovered art of Venetian mosaic in the late-nineteenth- and early twentieth-century is now seen as one of the most important aesthetic achievements of the Victorian-Edwardian era. Neglected and unappreciated for decades, surviving mosaics are being cleaned and restored worldwide. Whether highly visible monuments in major cities or small achievements of Venetian manufacturers are now treasured for the splendid masterpieces they are.

Remember Zen: Awaken the Buddha-Nature Within

Remember Zen: Awaken the Buddha-Nature Within

Sheldon Moore

4th Floor Press, Inc.
2017
nidottu
The great way does not have to be a difficult journey. The Buddha-nature or spirit within is fundamentally pure. Many people end up trying to sit their way to emptiness to purify what is already divine. I say less sitting and more awareness in this book for a very important reason. We can reach a point where the mind can rest naturally much sooner by making a direct connection with nature. Some sitting meditation is always required, but we must practice continual awareness with our eyes open, even while walking to the post office. Sitting around like a stone Buddha is not the path I am sharing.I hope that Remember Zen captures the subtleties of enlightenment well. It has the potential to remove decades or even lifetimes of practice from one who is ready to change their consciousness now. When we understand the three main components of our being better, it is much easier to see the problems a mind spinning out of control with desires and life-issues can bring. Buddhism puts a lot of thought into the concept of emptiness or voidness. I call it oneness in the book. Buddha never mentioned God or the prime creator for a simple reason--if we rely on an external force we will never look within and attain. He knew that when more people began to see the interdependence of everything they would naturally sense the oneness of it all. We are connected to all that is and when we are ready, the cosmos assists us in our awakening.
