Art During Wartime

Art During Wartime

Vanessa Meikle Schulman

While the Civil War raged on, many northern artists depicted everyday life rather than grand battles or landscapes of noble sacrifice. Amidst a conflict that was upending antebellum social norms, these artists created realistic scenes of mundane events, known as genre paintings. While many of the paintings seem merely to show everyday incidents, Vanessa Meikle Schulman argues that artists connected the visuals to larger concerns. With attention to how the war shaped new definitions of gender, race, and disability, Art during Wartime uncovers the complexity of these genre paintings. Schulman uses seven case studies of prominent and lesser-known artists who explored how the war instigated social change and shaped northern opinions about current events, including George Cochran Lambdin, Vincent Colyer, and Eastman Johnson. Utilizing detailed visual analysis and extensive historical research, Art during Wartime reframes our narrative of Civil War visual culture, placing genre painting in a central ideological role.

This workbook was created to teach children God's "Biblical Principles of Tithing." The Bible says that children are a gift from God. Our responsibility as parents is to train a child in the right path they should go and when they are older, they will not depart from the training that has been invested in them. As Christian parents, it is very important to teach children God's principles for Tithing. In doing so, we ensure that the seeds of the Word of God that we plant in our children's lives will allow them to grow up to be prosperous and have a happy life trusting in God.

Thom Shuman’s first book was 2005’s Jesse Tree – and since then he has been a much-loved Wild Goose writer. Thom’s voice is like no one else’s. There’s a vulnerability, gentleness and childlike wonder in his writing that folk deeply connect with, and that well fits the Advent and Christmas season. In This Season of Waiting contains scripture readings, Thom’s poetic reflections, and candle-lighting prayers for Advent, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. Thom lives in Columbus, Ohio with his family, and is a ‘retired’ pastor and an associate member of the Iona Community. His previous books include How Shall We Pray This Morning? For What Shall We Pray This Night?, Grace Will Walk Us Home, Christmas Eve in the Diner, The Soft Petals of Grace, and Gobsmacked. We light the candles of vision in this season of waiting, that we might see you in the refugees who have travelled so far to reach a new home that we might notice you in the folk sleeping in cars because there is no room for them in our prosperity that we might recognise you in the person who treats us with patience and kindness this day, God in community, Holy and One.

"God is a central focus and central force in my life, which is why so many of the essays in this book relate to the idea of God." Rabbi Stephen Lewis Fuchs Who Created God? It's something many of us wonder about at some point. Of course, there's no way to know for sure who created God, yet it is a question that Rabbi Stephen Fuchs ponders in, "Who Created God? and Other Essays." Through the writings that comprise this book, you will discover what happens when the rabbi invites Jesus into his Sukkah, his reaction to encountering his first swastika, and what Rabbi Fuchs feels is an intelligent response to terror. He also discusses Israel and describes its development since it became the homeland of the Jewish People in 1948. These are just a few of the engaging topics about which the rabbi shares his insights. You won't want to miss "The Jewish Marriage Ceremony" in which Rabbi Fuchs explains the rich symbolism and charming traditions involved when a Jewish couple gets married beneath a chuppah. At the end of the book, there is an exclusive and enlightening interview with Rabbi Fuchs.
