The Architecture of Aftermath

The Architecture of Aftermath

Terry Smith

University of Chicago Press
2006

The September 11 terrorist attacks targeted, in Osama bin Laden's words, "America's icons of military and economic power." In "The Architecture of Aftermath", Terry Smith argues that it was no accident that these targets were buildings: architecture has long served as a symbol of proud, defiant power - and never more so than in the late twentieth century. But after September 11, Smith asserts, late modern architecture suddenly seemed an indulgence. With close readings of key buildings - including Jorn Utzon's Sydney Opera House, Minoru Yamasaki's World Trade Center, Frank Gehry's Guggenheim Museum Bilbao, and Richard Meier's Getty Center - Smith traces the growth of the spectacular architecture of modernity and then charts its aftermath in the conditions of contemporaneity. Indeed, Smith focuses on the very culture of aftermath itself, exploring how global politics, clashing cultures, and symbolic warfare have changed the way we experience destination architecture. Like other artists everywhere, architects are responding to the idea of aftermath by questioning the viability of their forms and the validity of their purposes. With his richly illustrated "The Architecture of Aftermath", Smith has done so as well.

Practice, Power, and Forms of Life

Terry Pinkard

Philosopher Terry Pinkard revisits Sartre’s later work, illuminating a pivotal stance in Sartre’s understanding of freedom and communal action. Jean-Paul Sartre’s Critique of Dialectical Reason, released to great fanfare in 1960, has since then receded in philosophical visibility. As Sartre’s reputation is now making a comeback, it is time for a reappraisal of his later work. In Practice, Power, and Forms of Life, philosopher Terry Pinkard interprets Sartre’s late work as a fundamental reworking of his earlier ideas, especially in terms of his understanding of the possibility of communal action as genuinely free, which the French philosopher had previously argued was impossible. Pinkard reveals how Sartre was drawn back to Hegel, a move that was itself incited by Sartre’s newfound interest in Marxism. Pinkard argues that Sartre constructed a novel position on freedom that has yet to be adequately taken up and analyzed within philosophy and political theory. Through Sartre, Pinkard advances an argument that contributes to the history of philosophy as well as key debates on action and freedom.

Duncan Macpherson (1924-1993) was one of the greatest of Canadian cartoonists. He began his career as an illustrator for the Montreal Standard and Weekend Magazine, then joined the ranks of Maclean's and finally the Toronto Star. He won six National Newspaper Awards and a Molson Prize, among other honours. A formidable and groundbreaking artist, he was also an alcoholic who struggled with many personal demons. Professional Heckler is the first biography of Macpherson. Written by Terry Mosher, well known under the pen name Aislin for his decades of cartoons in the Montreal Gazette, the book is lavishly illustrated with hundreds of examples of Macpherson's drawings, paintings, and cartoons, as well as archival photographs. Both an admirer of Macpherson's work and a longtime student of the art, craft, and business of cartooning, Mosher brings a professional expertise and encyclopedic knowledge of the history of cartooning that allow him to comment on facets of Macpherson's work from a practical standpoint. With humour and affection, he provides remarkable insights into the artist's character, style, influences, personal foibles, and way of working. A delight to read, Professional Heckler is a pioneering work on an influential and controversial cartoonist that makes an essential contribution to the history of visual arts in Canada.

What do Osama bin Laden, H.G. Wells, and the GTA series have to do with Hideo Kojima? A lot more than you'd think In this stunning second installment of The Kojima Code series, author Terry Wolfe walks the reader through the brightest and darkest chapters of Hideo Kojima's career, once again connecting them to a world of influence most fans have no clue about. METAL GEAR SOLID 3 won hearts and minds after the controversy of MGS2, while METAL GEAR SOLID 4 was born out of resignation and death threats. But this time it's not just his industry, career, and personal life that are put under the microscope; this time it's also the politics, polemics, and deep historical divisions that shaped the Japanese game designer's stories. You'll be amazed how much you never noticed before, no matter how much you thought you knew. Once again the interpretation is sharp, bold, and unofficial as it gets. You'll never find a more compelling study of this subject. Not only will this book analyze key themes and messages going back to his early MSX2 days, but it will teach you how to think like an analyst yourself and rise above the noise of everyday critics.Does Hideo Kojima hate America, or love it? Is he a 21st Century prophet, or a student of history? Does it all boil down to pop film references, or are his film references hyperlinks to important cultural questions? The truth is hidden in the lies, because with Hideo Kojima it's always A STEALTH GAME.Also touches on: THE TWIN SNAKES, the MGS1 and 2 graphic novels, METAL GEAR SOLID MOBILE, PROJECT ITOH, METAL GEAR ONLINE, and more

This study brings together the whole story of Revelation (as well as Daniel, Isaiah, and the Gospels, among other prophecies) and shows how together they form a coherent narrative-not just of the end of the world, but of God's immense plan to allow Satan to build a global empire of evil on earth over the centuries.Find out why popular interpretations surrounding the Antichrist, the Tribulation, the Rapture, Zionism, the Millennial Kingdom, the Beast, the Mark, and the Whore of Babylon are all deeply mistaken and in need of re-examination. No tradition is safe when we look closely at the holy text One of the main goals of this book is to show that Revelation is a single, linear story, with no repetition, redundancy, or interchangeable parts. Every seal, trumpet, and vial is unique and has to happen in the exact order they appear. Skeptical? Fantastic. Be prepared to see things in the Bible you've never even thought about before, including a prophecy in Jeremiah which has allowed Satan to believe he will have a final victory over God when Jesus Christ comes back to Jerusalem Oh, and did I mention that most of Revelation happens after the Church is wiped out by Satan? Learn the mystery of the 144,000 elect and prepare yourself for a whole new appreciation of the final book of the Bible.

"Quench the Fire" is a comprehensive review of the subject of climate change, from a description of the basic science to the presentation of a detailed plan to mitigate the effects. A quantitative approach is used, where each mitigating strategy is evaluated in terms of its potential effect on the avoidance of temperature escalation. The results are surprising, and will lead you to reconsider many of the suppositions commonly espoused by media pundits and political leaders. What are the real effects of climate change in today's and tomorrow's world, and what effects are mistakenly attributed to climate change? What contribution to temperature de-escalation can be provided by electric vehicles and wind and solar power? Is there a place for nuclear power? What future technologies can make important contributions? The answers are here.

BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU BELIEVEMillions of people are seeking unofficial truths today, but what if the "awakening" turns out to be the greatest deception of all?Whether it's Q, aliens, alt-media journalists, DMT, quantum physics, or the radical revisionists claiming language and history are elaborate magic tricks to enslave us, many of the loudest "free thinkers" have suspicious connections that point to a deeper agenda. They hope to destroy traditional thinking not in order to enlighten us, but to make way for a New Age revolution of post-truth horror. This book connects the shady characters and dangerous claims of the intellectual underworld trying to take over the minds of the youth today. It warns readers that just because something exposes and challenges mainstream propaganda, doesn't mean the crazy alternative is true. Psychological warfare groups, alternative reality games, and a planned dialectic of collapse and "reset" lead us to a troubling conclusion: the system we all hate is going to be sacrificed to usher in something even worse.

Practitioners who work with clients at the end of their lives face difficult decisions concerning the client's self-determination, the kind of death he or she will have, and the prolongation of life. They must also remain sensitive to the beliefs and needs of family members and the legal, ethical, and spiritual ramifications of the client's death. Featuring twenty-three decision cases based on interviews with professional social workers, this unique volume allows students to wrestle with the often incomplete and conflicting information, ethical issues, and time constraints of actual cases. Instead of offering easy solutions, this book provides detailed accounts that provoke stimulating debates among students, enabling them to confront their own responses, beliefs, and uncertainties to hone their critical thinking and decision making skills for professional practice. *Please note: Teaching Notes for this volume will be available from Electronic Hallway in Spring 2010.
