W.E.B. Du Bois spent many decades fighting to ensure that African Americans could claim their place as full citizens and thereby fulfill the deeply compromised ideals of American democracy. Yet he died in Africa, having apparently given up on the United States. In this tour-de-force, Elvira Basevich examines this paradox by tracing the development of his life and thought and the relevance of his legacy to our troubled age. She adroitly analyses the main concepts that inform Du Bois’s critique of American democracy, such as the color line and double consciousness, before examining how these concepts might inform our understanding of contemporary struggles, from Black Lives Matter to the campaign for reparations for slavery. She stresses the continuity in Du Bois’s thought, from his early writings to his later embrace of self-segregation and Pan-Africanism, while not shying away from assessing the challenging implications of his later work. This wonderful book vindicates the power of Du Bois’s thought to help transform a stubbornly unjust world. It is essential reading for racial justice activists as well as students of African American philosophy and political thought.

Ships, Sea Songs and Shanties - Collected by W. B. Whall, Master Mariner
First published in 1910, "Ships, Sea Songs and Shanties" is a vintage collection of traditional sailing songs, collected and published in this volume by W. B. Whall. Originally appearing in the "Nautical Magazine and Yachting Monthly", the songs come complete with lyrics and sheet music, as well as pictures of various celebrated sailing ships of the time. William Boultbee Whall (1847-1917) was a Master mariner famous for writing this book. He became a member of the Merchant Navy when he was 14 and became acquainted with the songs during his 11 years aboard ships of the East India Companies. In addition to this volume, Whall also wrote a number of books related to practical seamanship and navigation. Many vintage books such as this are increasingly scarce and expensive. We are republishing this volume now in an affordable, modern, high-quality edition complete with specially-commissioned new introduction on folk music.

The Ceremony of Passing was originally written for the instruction of the members of the research lodge, known as the Lodge of Living Stones, founded by W.L.Wilmshurst in Leeds. Walter Leslie Wilmshurst was born in 1867 in Sussex. At the age of fifteen he was articled to a solicitor in Huddersfield, Yorkshire, and worked as a solicitor there until his death in 1939.He was also one of the best-loved writers about Freemasonry of the twentieth century as well as the founding Master of The Lodge of Living Stones. His first best-selling book, The Meaning of Masonry, was soon followed by the equally popular The Masonic Initiation, and in addition he was a prolific writer of essays about the esoteric side of Freemasonry.Wilmshurst's style of writing, highly formal and typical of his Victorian education, can make him a difficult read for modern Masons. Hence Robert Lomas, himself a popular writer on Freemasonry, and the Associate Membership Secretary of the Lodge of Living Stones, decided to revisit some of Wilmshurst's less well-known books and restate their ideas in a more modern idiom so as to alert new Masons to the deeper meaning of the rituals of their Craft. This edition contains Wilmshurst's complete original text, as well as Lomas's modern retelling

Znajdziemy tu oprocz wspanialych i egzotycznych krain oraz rownie egzotycznych i interesujacych postaci bohaterow, niezwykle wciagajace watki zwiazane z odkrywaniem i poznawaniem siebie, swojej natury i swoich wlasnych marzen i pragnien. Ksiazka zawiera rowniez nieprzebrane bogactwo wiedzy na temat kultury, religii i wspanialych tradycji Indii, ktore staja sie dla autorki tlem dla ukazania glebokich przezyc bohaterki oraz skomplikowanych wiezow uczuciowych i relacji laczacych ja z innymi postaciami powiesci. Jednoczesnie jednak kaze nam spojrzec obiektywnym okiem na problemy dzisiejszego swiata w ogole. RECENZJE: "Madra i ciekawa. Zmuszajaca do refleksji. Budzaca pytania, jakie wiele kobiet stawia sobie w zyciu. Pozostawiajaca po sobie slad w pamieci. Zdecydowanie warta przeczytania " - Ania Witowska, autorka ksiazki "Babskie Fanaberie" "Wiele przeczytalam dobrych ksiazek na temat rozwoju osobistego, ktore wypelniajac moje wnetrze, stanowia rowniez zewnetrzna ozdobe mojego domu. Kiedy dostalam do przeczytania "W Poszukiwaniu Siebie'', to pomyslalam sobie, ze juz sam tytul jest bardzo wymowny i znaczacy, dlatego tez poczawszy od pierwszych stron do ostatnich bylam w stanie ciekawosci i refleksji, gdzie poprzez doswiadczenia bohaterow poznawalam na nowo siebie. To ksiazka, ktora w wyjatkowy sposob opowiada historie ludzi, ktorzy podczas swojej podrozy doswiadczaja i smakuja zycia, szukajac najwlasciwszych drog dla siebie. - Agnieszka Magdar, trener rozwoju osobistego, tworca Kreo - Planety Kreatywnej Edukacji

The Welsh poet and author WH Davies spent much of his life on the road. There's a moment in A Poet's Pilgrimage, first published in 1918 and extracted here, in which the writer stops an old man who is travelling between Carmarthen and Kidwelly, some 10 miles distant, to ask if there are any inns along the way. Yes, he is told, "but if you will take my advice you will keep out of places of that kind. I have not been inside one for 13 years. If I had, I would not be the owner of this." And he points to a rusty old bicycle, the pitiful product of 13 years' abstinence, and rides off. This is one of the more benign moments in Davies' perambulations. He had by this time achieved success with his first books, The Autobiography of a Super-Tramp, Beggars and The True Traveller; he was back in his native country after years of train-hopping in America and Canada, and, as he puts it, "full of joy at the thought of going on and on". He also had, by this stage, the esteem of George Bernard Shaw, and the friendship of Edward Thomas (yet to be killed in the trenches).

William John Locke (20 March 1863 - 15 May 1930) was a novelist and playwright, born in Cunningsbury St George, Christ Church, Demerara, British Guiana on 20 March 1863, the eldest son of John Locke, bank manager of Barbados, and his first wife, Sarah Elizabeth Locke (n e Johns). His parents were English. In 1864 his family moved to Trinidad and Tobago. In 1865, a second son was born, Charlie Alfred Locke, who was eventually to become a doctor. Charlie Locke died in 1904 aged 39. His half-sister, Anna Alexandra Hyde (n e Locke), by his father's second marriage, died in 1898 in childbirth aged 25. At the age of three, Locke was sent to England for further education. He remained in England for nine years, before returning to Trinidad to attend prep school with his brother at Queen's Royal College. There, he won an exhibition to enter St John's College, Cambridge. He returned to England in 1881 to attend Cambridge University, where he graduated with honours in Mathematics in 1884, despite his dislike of that "utterly futile and inhuman subject".
