English as a second language students will enjoy it as a valuable study tool, as well as those learning a foreign language.Spanish and Portuguese have an estimated 85% to 90% vocabulary overlap. Most people who can read one can read the other. Try it today http: //www.creationsbycrouch.comJamaican Creole (Patwa)Jamaica's motto, "Out of many one people" can be easily seen through its language. Jamaican Creole, known locally as Patwa (Patois), is an English-based Creole language in the Western Atlantic Creole family. Patwa has strong influences from languages of West and Central Africa, and small influences of Spanish and Portuguese. It developed during the 17th century and includes significant influences from various dialects of English, especially those of Scotland and Ireland, as well as dialects of West African languages such as Akan and Twi. Over 4 million people speak Jamaican Creole, most of whom live in Jamaica. There are also many speakers in parts of the USA, Canada, Brazil, Costa Rica, Panama, Nicaragua, Colombia and the UK. Nevertheless, the language is in danger because of the dated view that Patwa is a socially inferior language to English. In recent years, however, much has been done to educate Jamaicans and the Jamaican diaspora of the legitimacy and rich history of their language.

Companies fear looking at changes or improvements to their sales forces for good reason: sales are the engine that drives revenue. No matter how patched up or sputtering that engine may be, the mere thought of overhauling it fills CEOs and senior executives alike with dread. Companies will make ongoing, piecemeal repairs as long as they can in a vain attempt to keep revenue flowing. They will tolerate behavior and performance from sales and marketing that would not be tolerated in any other areas of the business. For CEOs, there comes a point where changes or improvements must be made to these two areas of a business if growth is to continue. The world is not static, and sales and marketing organizations cannot be allowed to stagnate and to operate using now-primitive thinking. These business units are the last frontier for CEOs to address in business improvement.Fear of the unknown, and the use of the wrong lens for viewing the business, are the greatest barriers to overcome. The first step for any CEO is to become empowered with the knowledge of how the sales and marketing business should function; only then can he or she hope to become competitive and deliver profitable growth in today's ultracompetitive market. Most of the information that people are exposed to has been written by former middle managers of sales and marketing units. Such information is narrow in content and is focused on compensation plans, training, and ingenuous reporting. This book is written by a CEO, for CEOs like you, and is based on more than twenty-five years of consulting with CEOs in business turnarounds and profit improvement. This work views the broader demands of business that you, as a sales focused CEO, must deal with; it establishes the thinking that you will require for reassessing your marketing and sales forces. This book gives you a new lens for viewing your business and teaches you how to become a sales focused CEO. It will assist CEOs like you in joining the minority of leaders who are capable of achieving strategy execution; such leaders can achieve growth of 25 to 40 percent through the change process in shorter time frames. If you want to change your company's results, then The Sales Focused CEO is a must-read

Tracing Your Female Ancestors

Tracing Your Female Ancestors

Everyone has a mother and a line of female ancestors and often their paths through life are hard to trace. That is why this detailed, accessible handbook is of such value, for it explores the lives of female ancestors from the end of the Napoleonic Wars in 1815 to the beginning of the First World War. In 1815 a woman was the chattel of her husband; by 1914, when the menfolk were embarking on one of the most disastrous wars ever known, the women at home were taking on jobs and responsibilities never before imagined. Adele Emm's work is the ideal introduction to the role of women during this period of dramatic social change. Chapters cover the quintessential experiences of birth, marriage and death, a woman's working and daily life both middle and working class, through to crime and punishment, the acquisition of an education and the fight for equality. Each chapter gives advice on where further resources, archives, wills, newspapers and websites can be found, with plentiful common sense advice on how to use them.

"Brilliant" Telegraph"Captivating" TLS"Superb, surprising . . . A work of spirited imagination" Irish TimesLouise has always felt adrift between communities: not deaf enough to be a part of Deaf culture, not hearing enough to be fully within the hearing world. Hearing, for Louise, is inseparable from reading other people's lips. Through sight, she perceives words and strings them together like pearls to reconstruct a conversation. Then an audiology exam shows that most of her hearing has gone, and her doctor suggests a cochlear implant. With this irreversible intervention, Louise would gain a new, synthetic sense of hearing - but she would lose what remains of her natural hearing, which has shaped her unique relationship with the world, full of whispers and shadows. As she weighs the prospect of surgery, she must also contend with the chaotic reality of her life as she falls in love, suffers through her first job, and steadies herself with friends.A masterclass in wordplay and language's possibilities and limitations, this fiercely original debut plunges readers into Louise's world as she grapples with loss, and considers what she might gain in the process.Translated from the French by Jeffrey Zuckerman
