Fifty five years of "mentally" flavored childhood, studies, profession and family life were permeated by the author's courage and hope. This guide/book depicts the author's journey from Casablanca, McGill University (Montrial, Canada), Cornell University / Sloan-Kettering Institute, Rockefeller University (N.Y.C.), during which finding a "cure for cancer" was his driving force and obsession. In 1979, his Bipolar Affective Disorder flared up again; and this guide/book provides Hope and Insight to persons afflicted with M.D.I. (Manic-Depressive Illness) by displaying the struggle, the coping and the perception from within. It is the ultimate intent and hope of the author that his work will be helpful to those wishing to heighten their awareness of this illness. G-d Bless!
From the moment the first player steps onto the ice, every conceivable principle of science is in play. To understand hockey - fully understand it - Alain Hache argues that you must first learn how ice reacts to a passing blade, how the trajectory and aerodynamics of the puck affect its chances of getting into the net, how the tension on the stick transfers energy to the puck, and dozens of other details of the game. Slap Shot Science is an under-the-hood, behind-the-scenes, action-packed romp through special moments in the game as seen from the perspective of science and explained in a way everyone can understand. Among the topics Hache discusses are the differences between real ice and synthetic ice, the perfect amount of sharpness for a skate, how goalies can make spectacular saves even though the puck is traveling 100 miles per hour, whether players are skating faster today than in years past, and how equipment prevents many serious injuries. Slap Shot Science shows us how statistics can predict future performance by players and teams and why they can also be misused in many ways. By the close of the book you'll see hockey in a more sophisticated and scientific light, and the reasons things happen the way they do will be clearer than ever.

Emmanuel Levinas’ Conceptual Affinities with Liberation Theology

Emmanuel Levinas’ Conceptual Affinities with Liberation Theology analyzes Levinas’ work in relation to two important liberation theologians, Gustavo Gutiérrez and Jon Sobrino, whose scholarship, like his, needs to be brought into greater contemporary debate about the subject’s encounter with the other. More specifically, this book argues that for Levinas, Gutiérrez, and Sobrino, commitment to the neighbor is the necessary context for «understanding» God. They posit the human other as the possibility of the subject’s subjectivity. To be human is to act with love toward one’s neighbor. Thus, the author articulates the possibility of reading Levinas’ philosophy as a revalidation of one of the truths of Christianity: the concern for the humanity of every human person as expressed in Christian theology in general and liberation theology in particular. In order to show the relevance of Levinas’ philosophy for Christian theology in general, the author discusses three Christian scholars, Enrique Dussel, Jean-Luc Marion, and Michael Purcell. Although they challenge some aspects of Levinas’ philosophy, they nevertheless see its significance for Christian theological anthropology. The discussion concludes by proposing Levinas’ philosophy and liberation theology’s turn to the neighbor as significant for addressing contemporary socio-political and ethnic conflicts in sub-Saharan Africa.
Gils Blas recounts the education and swashbuckling adventures of an adaptable young valet as he progresses from one master to the next, making his way from naive youth to cunning servant to landed proprietor and nobleman--with a stint in jail, bereavements, and fits of remorse along the way. Finally, our hero learns compassion and achieves tranquillity in a life in the country. A terrific tale of action and adventure, newly designed in a 6-by-9-inch format by Waking Lion Press.
