Autobiography of Andrew Carnegie. AFTER retiring from active business my husband yielded to the earnest solicitations of friends, both here and in Great Britain, and began to jot down from time to time recollections of his early days. He soon found, however, that instead of the leisure he expected, his life was more occupied with affairs than ever before, and the writing of these memoirs was reserved for his play-time in Scotland. For a few weeks each summer we retired to our little bungalow on the moors at Aultnagar to enjoy the simple life, and it was there that Mr. Carnegie did most of his writing. He delighted in going back to those early times, and as he wrote he lived them all over again. He was thus engaged in July, 1914, when the war clouds began to gather, and when the fateful news of the 4th of August reached us, we immediately left our retreat in the hills and returned to Skibo to be more in touch with the situation. These memoirs ended at that time. Henceforth he was never able to interest himself in private affairs. Many times he made the attempt to continue writing, but found it useless. Until then he had lived the life of a man in middle life

Andrew Buist, a tenant farmer from Fife, typified the entrepreneurial and innovative spirit in Scottish farming in the mid-18th-century. He was a tenant farmer of Woodhead, Cowden, Grange of Lindores and Craigmill all in the parish of Abdie. He like many other tenant farmers in lowland Scotland would make contributions to the improvements in agriculture. He would marry Isabel Thomson and they would have nine children who were all born in Abdie Parish. After the death of his wife, Isabel, Andrew relocated to Markinch where he met and later married Christian Martin also of Markinch Parish. By 1777, Buist was working as a cotter and he purchased a residence at the east end of the Markinch Parish Church. Andrew Buist would live through the height of the Scottish Enlightenment when new science was being brought to bear on Scottish agriculture and would play a part in those exciting changes. This then is the narrative of the life and times of Andrew Buist.

Beautiful and vivacious Margaret "Peggy" O'Neil Timberlake had been widowed only four months in 1829 when she married newly elected President Andrew Jackson's best friend and Secretary of War John Eaton. Horrified by rumors about her dubious reputation, the ladies of Washington, including the wife of Vice President John C. Calhoun, refused to socialize with Peggy Eaton. Enraged by their rejection, the President called a Cabinet meeting to official examine Peggy's character and virtue and to order them to include her in their social lives. When they refused, Jackson stunned the nation in 1831by dissolving his official Cabinet and killing Calhoun's almost certain chance to be the next president. Newspapers and magazines dubbed the crisis the Petticoat Affair. Widowed again in 1856, 59-year-old Peggy Eaton married a 19-year-old Italian dancing instructor and music teacher who spent all her money before he ran off with her 17-year-old granddaughter. The woman who destroyed Jackson's Cabinet and derailed Calhoun's political ambitions died penniless at age 79 in a home for destitute women.
