Antisthenes: The Founder of Cynicism by Charles Chappuis is a little gem of a book; translated from the French, it puts Antisthenes (444-365 BC), the founder of the Cynic school of Greek philosophy, in his rightful place beside Socrates, his teacher for twenty-four years; beside Plato, a fellow pupil of Socrates and competitor in ideas to Antisthenes: while Plato was teaching at the Academy, Antisthenes, a νόθοι illegitimate child], was teaching at the Cynosarges; beside Diogenes, his own pupil and the subsequent head of Cynicism; and so on and so forth, in a long line of esteemed philosophers from Diogenes to Crates to Zeno of Citium, the founder of Stoicism, and later to Epictetus and even to Marcus Aurelius... The earliest known nominalist in antiquity, Antisthenes developed a logic that "denies rational knowledge and general ideas," "suppresses all definition," and "rejects contradiction and error." He is consequently about as philosophically far from Plato as a philosopher can get. It may not be surprising to know that the two of them became enemies later in life.As for ethics, Antisthenes "puts wisdom in behavior, virtue in actions, and makes exercise, work, and toil the condition of the good." While "the school of the Cyrenaics conflatesthe good with pleasure, Antisthenes identifies it with virtue, and virtue with effort and toil."

Chaos has chosen an ending. After stripping Trotter away from the Noevans, the race of people she'd sworn to protect, Chaos forced her into the mythical role of God of Gods. It is now her job to bring Death to all Creation. But something else is planning to use Trotter's dominion over Death to alter the ending Chaos chose... The gods of Realm, terrified of Trotter's new power, are manipulated into making a deal with devils from their ancient past. After thousands of years of imprisonment, however, the Undreams will stop at nothing to exact revenge on the gods and turn the universe back into a nightmare without end. Meanwhile, violence is spreading across the face of Aevum. Temples begin to fall one by one in cities far and wide to inexplicable uprisings. The only perpetrators left behind are nearly catatonic, with mysteriously solid white eyes and repeating the same phrase over and over again: Chaos Dreams, But He Never Sleeps. But even this isn't as unnerving as when the gods begin appearing on their doorstep, ragged and terrified by what horrors they've released.

Back in Alexandria, stepping out for the first time onto the arena sands is a familiar figure. With Egypt on the verge of rebellion, why has Gaius Flaminius Drusus, imperial agent, begun a new career-as a gladiator? Part Five in ON HADRIAN'S SECRET SERVICE
