The year is 1928. Forty-four Octobers have come and gone since Elfego Baca earned top ranking as a gunfighter. Few now remember that on a fall day in 1884, in the village of Frisco, New Mexico, Baca ducked some 4,000 bullets fired by eighty cowboys aiming to kill him. Fewer still recall that the reason for the shoot-out was Baca's obsession with rescuing Mexican settlers from abuse by Texans in days before "civil rights" became a catch phrase. The reputation of the Hero-now turned-lawman-lawyer-politician is sorely in need of repair, for despite his boasts of possessing one of the best law practices in the state, things have not gone well for Baca. Elfego has been declared a bankrupt; he's been humiliated by an untidy divorce; and neither political party in the state seems to want to run him as a candidate for much of anything. So, what's a man of action to do? What Elfego does is to make a pre-emptive strike to repair that tattered reputation. He finds a biographer to tell his story just like he wants it told, including his meetings with Billy the Kid and the opera star, Mary Garden. He finally settles on Kyle Samuel Crichton, but only after William A. Keleher, the respected journalist-lawyer, has said, "No." Keleher introduces Baca to Crichton, who has few writing credentials though he would later author popular books and a successful Broadway play. Crichton has escaped from the smoke stacks and slag heaps of the Pennsylvania mining country to the pure air of Albuquerque, not to repair the reputation of those like Elfego who have fallen from grace, but to repair his own health. While Elfego is as short as Napoleon, Crichton is taller than Gary Cooper. While Elfego is rotund, Crichton is thin and muscular. While Elfego is bold, Crichton is cautious. But Crichton, who later wrote a biography of the Metropolitan Opera star Ris Stevens ("Subway to the Met"), brings a wild sense of humor that was to be reflected in all his books. And, while Baca is long on yarns that boost his heroism, Crichton insists on balance. The narrative of the book the pair produced remains open to question: How much of it is fact, how much is flights of fancy? Whichever it is, it's a whale of a story about a life lived to a fullness rarely experienced.

As a young girl, our Lord Jesus Christ knew of the disasters to come in my life, and He would carry me through those difficult times. I desperately needed Him. God's mighty hands are at work in my life. He would mend my broken heart, dry my tears and rebuild my life, so I could continue to serve Him. When time looked its bleakest God gave me his love freely. Handling my situations in life I've had to leave the future up to Him. My poems are great comfort to me and I pray that they touch and inspire those that read my book. Life's struggles, pain, unfulfillment, frustrations, kindness, encouragements and support, these have helped me to put words to my thoughts and to be bold in my writings... Wendy Mae Crichton

Biological Inorganic Chemistry: A New Introduction to Molecular Structure and Function, Third Edition, provides a comprehensive discussion of the biochemical aspects of metals in living systems. The fascinating world of the role of metals in biology, medicine and the environment has progressed significantly since the very successful Second Edition of the book published in 2012. Beginning with an overview of metals and selected nonmetals in biology, the book supports the interdisciplinary nature of this vibrant area of research by providing an introduction to basic coordination chemistry for biologists and structural and molecular biology for chemists. Having built this accessible foundation, the book progresses to discuss biological ligands for metal ions, intermediary metabolism and bioenergetics, and methods to study metals in biological systems. The book also covers metal assimilation pathways; transport, storage, and homeostasis of metal ions; sodium and potassium channels and pumps; magnesium phosphate metabolism and photoreceptors; calcium and cellular signaling; the catalytic role of several classes of mononuclear zinc enzymes; the biological chemistry of iron; and copper chemistry and biochemistry. In addition, the book discusses nickel and cobalt enzymes; manganese chemistry and biochemistry; molybdenum, tungsten, vanadium, and chromium; non-metals in biology; biomineralization; metals in the brain; metals and neurodegeneration; metals in medicine and metals as drugs; and metals in the environment. Now in its Third Edition, this popular and award-winning resource highlights recent exciting advances and provides a thorough introduction for both researchers approaching the field from a variety of backgrounds, as well as advanced students.

As the Big Island of Hawai'i faces an eruption of unprecedented intensity, the U.S. military contends with the consequences of a long-held doomsday secret. The master of the techno-blockbuster joins forces with the master of the modern thriller. Eruption is the passion project Michael Crichton, creator of Jurassic Park, ER, Twister, and Westworld, had been pursuing for years ahead of his untimely passing in 2008. After discovering his notes and the partial manuscript, his wife, Sherri Crichton, searched for more than a decade until she found the perfect partner: James Patterson, the world's most popular storyteller. "A seismic publishing event...It's a thrill and the pages practically turn themselves." --Associated Press "Red-hot storytelling...The action scenes will make readers' eyes pop as the tension continues to build." --Kirkus (starred review) "Fast-paced and deeply considered...A cinematic story rooted in science and infused with plenty of heart, tackling big themes like love and loss."--Time

Foundations for a New Civilization: Structure, Change, & Tendency in Nature & Ourselves

The Canadian philosopher, Will Crichton, presents a revolutionary philosophical system in this book. It offers a fully naturalistic account of experience. It presents an explanation of consciousness and opens the door to naturalistic theology. The book contains a unique analysis of experience that embraces modern physics, psychology, religion, and culture within the same view of reality. "Crichton's work furnishes a foundation for a psychology that includes the reality of consciousness on the same foundation as the reality of the body and brain. Natural existence includes both conscious experiences and atoms. The source of consciousness exists in a purely naturalistic, though not entirely material, universe. His system is pregnant with psychological theories..." - From the Afterword by Carl Semmelroth PhD "I approached Crichton's book with total skepticism. A new system of philosophy in 214 pages? Now I'm not sure I will ever stop re-reading it. He starts with an analysis of structure, change and tendency (causation). This analysis takes him on a journey that makes spectacular visits to most of the major problems in the history of philosophy. And his vehicle is logic. Problems involving discontinuous change, Hume's view of causation, time, multiple universes lead him surprisingly to revolutionary views concerning cultures and ethics and God. "The book's organization makes it as easy as is probably possible to follow Crichton's system. He puts his proofs in an appendix and devotes the major portion of the book to a summary of his views. But watch out. This work has practically no redundancy. Each sentence requires serious consideration and sometimes a lot of thought. And they just keep coming at you. "This once in a lifetime book deserves more than 5 stars." -From a customer review on Amazon of a former edition. This book presents a ground-breaking way of thinking about reality starting with structure, change, and tendency as categories encompassing everything in space and time, at all scales and levels of organization. The principle of causality derived from the logical analysis of these categories reveals a transcendent factor accounting for natural tendencies governed by previously existing patterns. Crichton's account of ethics and health is derived from the nature of consciousness and individuality. It demonstrates the indispensability of ethics to individual health as well as the economic welfare of a community and its quality of life. Physics has been a halfway house from supernaturalism to naturalism - its "laws" being supernatural in principle. Crichton's presentation of a purely naturalistic view of causation as tendency furnishes a more natural home for the physical sciences. It replaces the notion of laws that govern nature, from "above" nature, with the notion of tendencies that develop over space time as a product of nature. Crichton's account of nature includes the findings of modern science, but furnishes a better understanding of elementary reality and nature. By showing how individuality is the basic tendency of nature, including our individualities as persons, it paves the way for a revitalized civilization.
