Daniel P'Lopez' latest novel Dark Stages is the first of a series of memoirs he will publish about his own life called The Dark Chronicles. The book details the trials and tribulations of growing up in southern, California and the relationships with family and friends that he has along the way. It is a very candid expression of young life told with a refreshing honesty and intimate truth. You feel like you know the author as he details his experience coming of age as a young gay man and experimenting in all kinds of relationships. It is an intensely personal chronology of one person's early life experiences.Confronting bullies as a teenager is something that comes and goes through his early years. He is at first the victim and then the perpetrator. He describes these conflicts in a way that makes you feel the fear that the author feels as an outsider and as a lonely, confused teenager trying to fit in. Like the title suggests, he goes through some dark times of personal paranoia and devastating teen angst as he confronts rumors and stories about his sexual past that may or may not be real. It shows the beginnings of a pattern of over reaction to perceived insults and slights that may or may not be there. It clearly leaves the reader wondering what is true and what is cooked up in the author's very vivid mind. It also shines a light on a sometimes difficult family life, with issues that keeps the drama moving in the home life. All the pain of the family is laid bare, but there are also good times and upbeat moments like moving into a new home or putting up a Christmas tree or even falling in love. Dark Stages is a candid look at one young man's coming of age that is told with a frankness and straight-forward voice that keeps you reading as the author moves through childhood incidents, teenage romances and all kinds of early life drama that one understands and can relate to.Daniel P'Lopez is the author of six published books including The Vendetta House, The Story of Myles, Alestir, Lost in a Journey, Creations of Daniel and The Hiding Seekers. His next novel Pals is due out in the near future. All the books are available in paperback and as E-Books at Barnes & Noble and Amazon.

The Shambhala Guide to Traditional Chinese Medicine

The Chinese approach to health and healing is a rich and complex tradition, encompassing disease prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of the full spectrum of illnesses, as well as offering a holistic approach to mental health. More than a system of medicine in the Western sense of the term, the Chinese approach to health care reflects the Taoist belief in the importance of promoting balance and harmony in body, mind, and spirit. In traditional Chinese medicine, this goal is achieved through nutrition, herbs, acupuncture, massage, exercise, meditation, and other holistic methods that restore the natural patterns of the human system. This book is an accessible and highly readable introduction to all the major aspects of this vast tradition. Topics covered include: The foundation of traditional medicine in Chinese history The theory of chi (energy) and how it influences health The Chinese approach to health, happiness, and longevity The use of Chinese herbal medicine and herbal formulas Diet and nutrition as a form of preventive medicine Acupuncture, acupressure, and massage—including sample techniques for self-massage The practice of chee-gung, or "moving meditation," as a means of promoting good health Meditation and internal alchemy Suggestions for further reading and other resources
Chi-gung, which literally means "energy work," is a system of cultivating health, vitality, and longevity that is based on the fundamental principles of Taoism and the laws of nature. Practiced by the Chinese for thousands of years, chi-gung works with the energy found in all living things to help rid the body of the imbalances that sap our strength and give rise to disease. The simple, meditative movements, breathing exercises, and massage techniques that are the basis of chi-gung can be practiced by anyone, regardless of age or physical fitness. This book was published in hardcover under the title Harnessing the Power of the Universe.
"The Rebirth of the Clinic" begins with a bold assertion: the doctor-patient relationship is sick. Fortunately, as this engrossing book demonstrates, the damage is not irreparable. Today, patients voice their desires to be seen not just as bodies, but as whole people. Though not willing to give up scientific progress and all it has to offer, they sense the need for more. Patients want a form of medicine that can heal them in body and soul. This movement is reflected in medical school curricula, in which courses in spirituality and health care are taught alongside anatomy and physiology. But how can health care workers translate these concepts into practice? And how can they strike an appropriate balance, integrating and affirming spirituality without abandoning centuries of science or unwittingly adopting pseudoscience? Physician and philosopher Daniel Sulmasy is uniquely qualified to guide readers through this terrain. At the outset of this accessible, engaging volume, he explores the nature of illness and healing, focusing on health care's rich history as a spiritual practice and on the human dignity of the patient. Combining sound theological reflection with doses of healthy skepticism, he goes on to describe empirical research on the effects of spirituality on health, including scientific studies of the healing power of prayer, emphasizing that there are reasons beyond even promising research data to attend to the souls of patients. Finally, Sulmasy devotes special attention and compassion to the care of people at the end of life, incorporating the stories of several of his patients. Throughout, the author never strays from the theme that, for physicians, attending to the spiritual needs of patients should not be a moral option, but a moral obligation. This book is an essential resource for scholars and students of medicine and medical ethics and especially medical students and health care professionals.
Once rarely discussed in medical circles, the relationship between spirituality and health has become an important topic in health care. This change is evidenced in courses on religion and medicine taught in most medical schools, articles in journals such as the "New England Journal of Medicine", and conferences being held all over the country. Yet, much of the discussion of the role of religion and spirituality in health care keeps the critical distance of only being about spirituality. "A Balm for Gilead" goes further, offering a work of spirituality. Sulmasy moves between the poetic and the speculative, addressing his subject in the tradition of great spiritual writers like Augustine and Bonaventure. He draws from philosophical and theological sources - specifically, Hebrew and Christian scripture - to illuminate how the art of healing is integrally tied to a sense of the divine and our ultimate interconnectedness. Health care professionals - and anyone else involved with the care of the sick and dying - will find this series of meditations both inspiring and instructive. Sulmasy addresses the spiritual malaise that physicians, nurses, and other health care workers experience in their professional lives, and explores how these Christian healers can be inspired to persevere in the care of the sick. Drawing on the parable of the prodigal son, for instance, Sulmasy illustrates how some physicians have put financial gain ahead of their patients, and how genuine spirituality might change their hearts. He examines both enigmatic topics such as the relationship between sinfulness, sickness, and suffering and the spirituality of more routine topics such as preventive medicine. In one especially stirring and poignant meditation, he reflects on the spirituality of dying in the light of Christian hope. "A Balm for Gilead" interweaves prayer and reflection, pointing the way to a twenty-first-century spirituality for health care professionals and their patients.
The beneficial health effects of daily chi-gung practice have long been known in China, but in the West, chi-gung is becoming increasingly used for general well-being and to complement conventional medical treatment. The Essence of Chi-Gung is an easy-to-use workbook that teaches the fundamentals of chi-gung practice and provides a safe, basic daily regimen that can be adapted for people of all ages and physical abilities. The view in Chinese medicine is that good health is maintained by circulating and increasing chi, the vital life energy that we are all born with. In chi-gung practice, slow, rhythmic breathing is synchronized with body movements, in a way which is beneficial to both the nervous and immune systems and to overall health. This manual includes over fifty step-by-step illustrations of the warm-up exercises and movement forms.

Multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channels provide an abstract and unified representation of different physical communication systems, ranging from multi-antenna wireless channels to wireless digital subscriber line (DSL) systems. They have the key property that several data streams can be simultaneously established.MIMO Transceiver Design via Majorization Theory presents an up-to-date unified mathematical framework for the design of point-to-point MIMO transceivers with channel state information (CSI) at both sides of the link according to an arbitrary cost function as a measure of the system performance. In addition, the framework embraces the design of systems with given individual performance on the data streams. This is an invaluable resource for researchers and practitioners involved in the state-of-the-art design of MIMO-based communication systems.
The early settlement of the region around Pittsburgh was characterized by a messy collision of personal, provincial, national, and imperial interests. Driven by the efforts of Europeans, Pennsylvanians, Virginians, and Indians, almost everyone attempted to manipulate the clouded political jurisdiction of the region. A Colony Sprung from Hell traces this complex struggle. The events and episodes that make up the story highlight the difficulties of creating and consolidating authority along the frontier, where the local population’s acceptance or denial of authority determined the extent to which any government could impose its will. Ultimately, what was at stake was the nature of authority itself.Author Daniel P. Barr demonstrates that deep divisions marked efforts to exercise power over the western Pennsylvania frontier and limited the effectiveness of such attempts. They developed roughly along provincial lines, owing to a fierce competition between Pennsylvania and Virginia to incorporate the region into their colonies. This jurisdictional dispute permeated many social and political levels, impacting all those who sought power and influence along the western Pennsylvania frontier. Individuals, businesses, provincial governments, and British policymakers competed for jurisdiction in the political and legal arenas, while migrants, settlers, and Indians opposed one another on the ground in a contest that was far more confrontational and violent. Although the participants and the nature of the conflict changed over time, the fundamental question—who was going to make the important decisions regarding the region—remained unsettled and unanswered, resulting in a consistent pattern of discord and contention.A Colony Sprung from Hell is an important contribution to the understanding of power and authority along the late colonial frontier.
