Howie ambles into robot club hoping to find a friend. But when Lincoln bounds into the room, Howie hides. The strange new bird is too big and fluffy. The teacher, however, puts the unlikely pair together. Will they be able to accept each other's wonky ideas and become friends? For STEM classes, this story emphasizes the discussion of form v. function. The story encourages divergent thinking as Lincoln and Howie design a robot. For kids who are rigid and inflexible, they'll see the value of considering different options, and accepting those who are different.WHAT THEY ARE SAYING: ." . .offbeat and clever. . . With pages filled with animals and robots, this tale will certainly appeal to kids. . . ." Kirkus Reviews"A delightful story of friendship and teamwork." Dori Hillestad Butler, Theodore Geisel Honor Award for King & Kayla and the Case of the Missing Dog Treats, and Edgar award for The Buddy Files: The Case of the Lost Boy"Charming. . .Pattison's storytelling skills give readers a look into the give-and-take of friendship." Carla Killough McClafferty, author of The Many Faces of George Washington"What's WONKY? The heart-warming story of an unlikely friendship between Robot Club partners, told in Darcy Pattison's classic, charming voice. WONKY is a good reminder that friendships are often found with a heart that's open to the unexpected." Lynn Rowe Reed, illustrator of Punctuation Takes a Vacation"WONKY is a delightful mixture of a story about new friends and a robot club--honestly, what could be more fun? I adored Howie and Lincoln, Darcy Pattison's endearing animal characters, and Nathaniel Gold's colorful illustrations just pop off the page " Monica Clark-Robinson, author of Let the Children March

MIRACLES COME AT A HIGH PRICE "Every block of stone has a statue inside it and it is the task of the sculptor to discover it." -MichelangeloPerfect for fans of the spine-chilling story CORALINE.So far, it's taken 48 years to build the medieval Cathedral of St. Stephens, and there's only the west tower to finish. Laurel has grown up with the cathedral as her playground because her father is the architect overseeing the building project. She loves the massive stones and the stone masons and sculptors, especially the odd men who carve gargoyles. But the new priest decides there's no money to finish that last tower. With her father's job threatened and her beloved cathedral unfinished, Laurel is willing to risk everything to find a treasure large enough to build.Impossible. She needs a miracle. This is a rich, surprising, and sometimes disturbing historical tale of gargoyles, and those who carve the creatures from solid stone. POLLEN: DARWIN'S 130 YEAR PREDICTION Elementary Science - POLLENHow long does it take for science to find an answer to a problem? On January 25, 1862, naturalist Charles Darwin received a box of orchids. One flower, the Madagascar star orchid, fascinated him. It had an 11.5" nectary, the place where flowers make nectar, the sweet liquid that insects and birds eat. How, he wondered, did insects pollinate the orchid? It took 130 years to find the answer. After experiments, he made a prediction. There must be a giant moth with a 11.5" proboscis, a straw-like tongue. Darwin died without ever seeing the moth, which was catalogued by entomologists in in 1903. But still no one had actually observed the moth pollinating the orchid. In 1992, German entomologist, Lutz Thilo Wasserthal, Ph.D. traveled to Madagascar. By then, the moths were rare. He managed to capture two moths and released them in a cage with the orchid. He captured the first photo of the moth pollinating the flower, as Darwin had predicted 130 years before.Backmatter includes information on the moth, the orchid, Charles Darwin, Lutz Wasserthal. Also included is Wasserthal's original photo taken in 1992.MOMENTS IN SCIENCE COLLECTIONThis exciting series focuses on small moments in science that made a difference. In 1915, British astronomer Arthur Stanley Eddington was fascinated with Einstein's new theory of general relativity. The theory talks about how forces push and pull objects in space. Einstein said that the sun's gravity could pull and bend light. To test this, astronomers decided to photograph a solar eclipse. The eclipse would allow them to photograph the stars before and during the solar eclipse. If the star's position moved, then it was evidence that that light had bent. Eddington and his team traveled from England to the island of Principe, just off the African coast, to photograph the eclipse. In simple language, this nonfiction illustrated picture book explains how the push (acceleration) and pull (gravity) of space affects light.Back matter includes information on Einstein, Eddington, and the original photograph of the 1919 solar eclipse.MOMENTS IN SCIENCE COLLECTIONThis exciting series focuses on small moments in science that made a difference.
