The unforgettable story of Ireland’s greatest unsung hero, Tom Crean, in graphic novel form. Tom Crean, the teenage son of a poor Kerry farmer, ran away from home in 1893 to seek adventure, and became a major figure in three pioneering expeditions to the unexplored Antarctic. Crean volunteered for Captain Robert Scott’s Discovery expedition in 1901 and was among the last to see Scott alive near the South Pole in 1912. He returned to the ice with Irishman Ernest Shackleton on the epic Endurance voyage. Undeterred by the hardships and hazards of trekking across the frozen wastes, more than once he risked all to save his companions in acts of astonishing bravery. When he settled back in Annascaul, the only hint Crean gave to his death-defying adventures was in the name of his pub: The South Pole Inn.
Art Markets in Europe, 1400–1800
Michael North; David Ormrod
Ashgate Publishing Limited
1998

The reinvention of art-history during the 1980s has provided a serious challenge to the earlier formalist and connoisseurial approaches to the discipline, in ways which can only help economic and social historians in the current drive to study past societies in terms of what they consumed, produced, perceived and imagined. This group of essays focuses on three main issues: the demand for art, including the range of art objects purchased by various social groups; the conditions of artistic creativity and communication between different production centres and artistic millieux; and the emergence of art markets which served to link the first two phenomena. The work draws on new research by art historians and economic and social historians from Europe and the United States, and covers the period from the late Middle Ages to the early nineteenth century.
Promiscuous Customers:Invisible Brands
Michael Bayler; David Stoughton
Capstone Publishing Ltd

What's wrong with the Internet? Customers on today's "Commoditised Internet" expect unprecedented levels of service: they are fickle and promiscuous. Traditional branding makes matters worse, in a trading environment that is unsentimental and unforgiving. If the interaction between customer and brand is unsatisfactory, the problems for business are far worse: the transparency of the market commoditises everything. These are the causes of the near-collapse of business on the Internet. The question of value How can we bring together value for the on-line customer with value for the enterprise, to create the profitable, sustainable business models of tomorrow? The new radical paradigm Bayler and Stoughton deliver a sophisticated new paradigm, the Marketspace, and a practical methodology, Modal Analysis, designed to help businesses build their future roles on a foundation of clear customer value. They turn today's philosophy of failure on its head, with critical new insights such as: "Stickiness" and "compelling content" are red herrings; meaning and trust are the true building blocks for customer satisfaction and loyalty. Content is anything but King - the book rediscovers and defines the true value of information in digital trade. Online brands, far from being controllable corporate assets, are out-of-control, and invisible. The old mantras of channel, device and bandwidth make way for the new value enablers: P2P, XML, mobile, always-on and automation. "Mind share" is redundant; automated digital services deliver the new Unconscious Loyalty.

Kilims

Kilims from Mazandaran are true masterpieces of woven minimalism. From stripes to fields of pure and deep colour, these textiles represent a singular kind of artistic abstraction. The women who authored these pieces made them for their own use. In wool and silk, they created works of textile art using the basic building blocks of all hand weaving: warp and weft. The grid thus created is at the same time rigid and flexible; it lends itself to geometric pattern, but also allows for feathery ikat-like effects and multidimensional colour expression. This book is a sumptuous visual celebration of a largely unknown modern art form. Expert writers add context to the pieces by contemplating subjects such as 20th-century minimalism, materiality and the nature of colour.
