"An elegant, meticulously researched, and eminently readable history of the books that define us as Americans. For history buffs and book-lovers alike, McHugh offers us a precious gift."--Jake Halpern, Pulitzer Prize winner and New York Times bestselling author "With her usual eye for detail and knack for smart storytelling, Jess McHugh takes a savvy and sensitive look at the 'secret origins' of the books that made and defined us. . . . You won't want to miss a one moment of it."--Brian Jay Jones, author of Becoming Dr. Seuss and the New York Times bestselling Jim Henson The true, fascinating, and remarkable history of thirteen books that defined a nation Surprising and delightfully engrossing, Americanon explores the true history of thirteen of the nation's most popular books. Overlooked for centuries, our simple dictionaries, spellers, almanacs, and how-to manuals are the unexamined touchstones for American cultures and customs. These books sold tens of millions of copies and set out specific archetypes for the ideal American, from the self-made entrepreneur to the humble farmer. Benjamin Franklin's Autobiography, How to Win Friends and Influence People, Webster's Dictionary, Emily Post's Etiquette Americanon looks at how these ubiquitous books have updated and reemphasized potent American ideals--about meritocracy, patriotism, or individualism--at crucial moments in history. Old favorites like the Old Farmer's Almanac and Betty Crocker's Picture Cook Book are seen in this new way--not just as popular books but as foundational texts that shaped our understanding of the American story. Taken together, these books help us understand how their authors, most of them part of a powerful minority, attempted to construct meaning for the majority. Their beliefs and quirks--as well as personal interests, prejudices, and often strange personalities--informed the values and habits of millions of Americans, woven into our cultural DNA over generations of reading and dog-earing. Yet their influence remains uninvestigated--until now. What better way to understand a people than to look at the books they consumed most, the ones they returned to repeatedly, with questions about everything from spelling to social mobility to sex. This fresh and engaging book is American history as you've never encountered it before.

"Cats of Instagram" meets National Geographic in this hilarious picture book about nature's cutest weirdos from the author of Pink Is for Blobfish The Internet pretty much runs on cute animal photos, but "cute" is so much more than clickbait kittens and insta-pups. Cute is for feathery-gilled axolotls (pronounced: ax-uh-LOT-ulz), shy pygmy hippos, poisonous blue dragons, and armored pangolins. All of these animals are cute, but they've also adapted remarkable ways to survive in their unique environments. With her signature blend of humor and zoological know-how, Pink Is for Blobfish author Jess Keating shows how cute animals can be more than just a pretty face in this latest installment of the World of Weird Animals.

Animal Planet meets Captain Underpants in the ickiest, squickiest, most fart-filled World of Weird Animals book yet, from the creators of Pink Is for Blobfish. The creators of Pink Is for Blobfish are back, and they've brought 17 of their most revolting friends: there are slippery, slimy snot otters, gulls that projectile-vomit on command, fish that communicate via flatulence, and chipmunks that cultivate healthy forests by pooping a trail of seeds wherever they go. But there's more to these skin-crawling creatures than meets the eye, and as zoologist Jess Keating explains, sometimes it's the very things that make us gag that allow these animals to survive in the wild. The perfect combination of yuks, yucks, and eureka 's, this latest installment in the World of Weird Animals series will inspire budding scientists and burp enthusiasts alike

Now, even seventy years later, can anyone know if this was the right choice? In a thoughtful account of these history-changing events, Jess Brallier explains the leadup to the bombing, what the terrible results of it were, and how the threat of atomic war has colored world events since.

Relationships, growing up, change, gender identity, becoming an adult-jesus how do we, any of us, ever make it past fifteen, you might ask. Jess Eternamente Fraga explores this journey, the wounds, the angel who must drag her wings through the dirt, all the grown-up troubles that keep us grounded and perhaps never able to reach our full potential as self-realized individuals. This collection of very personal, intimate poems will enter you in ways you never thought poetry could. The magnificent use of figurative language elevates the material from the personal to the universal, as you recognize yourself-young, confused, wounded-inside these pages, just as the author, no doubt, made strides in finding her "self" while writing it.-Mario Rene Padilla

In exploring memory, Jess Enternamente Fraga does not allow memory to confine or define her. The poems in Liberation with a Memory do not come from a place of nostalgia, nor deal with the disillusionment that nostalgia often creates in the soul. As she writes "No apologies, no regrets." Jess's memories liberate her from the past, a past that often seeks to restrict, as past experiences reimagined often do by frustrating our attempts at self-understanding. In exploring those indelible memories that help to define who we are, she finds that, by writing "of them" in beautifully crafted verse, she releases herself from the power they hold over her consciousness. Throughout her marvelous collection, Jess also experiments with language, as filtered through her memory, so it might explain how "it is impossible to relieve those memories / and stay detached.... Immune," yet continues to remind us that, "What if is a dangerous game." Her poems want to explore but not regret, past experiences, past loves, that past first kiss.-Mario Rene Padilla
