"Friday afternoon traffic on the Bay Bridge is at its peak. Tollbooths are backed up for at least half a mile as families anxious to escape the heat of the city try to get a head start on the weekend and those whose occupations carried them out of town during the week head home. Everyone is glad that the weekend is here. Ali and Yasin were ready. They had been trained in the best terrorist camp in the Islam world. To begin their final journey, both men were bathed and dressed in fresh clean white linen robes, as was the custom of those who were about to die, hidden under jeans and t-shirts to avoid detection." . . . With a deft hand, sharp eye, and a keen insider knowledge of the advanced defense systems that protect the American way of life, bestselling author John R Hanny weaves a gripping story of conspiracy and betrayal. Blood is spilled, battles are lost and won against the forces of greed and religious extremism, and as American heroes race against the clock to protect the country they love, Hanny forces his readers to confront the true nature of the dire threats facing America today. Just when you think you finally have a second to breathe, he dares to ask the most frightening question of all: How would the United States respond to a nuclear attack on the Homeland?

The Chesapeake – An Environmental Biography

Part of the problem in dealing with public perceptions about Chesapeake Bay is that people think it will last forever. This obviously is not true. As oceanographer Jerry Schubel has noted, twenty thousand years ago there was no Chesapeake Bay. Since that time, there have been other beginnings and endings of other Chesapeake Bays. As we look to the future, however, we can see that increasingly the transformation of the Chesapeake will be more a human phenomenon than a work of nature.
It has long been one of the most fundamental problems of philosophy, and it is now, John Searle writes, "the most important problem in the biological sciences" What is consciousness? Is my inner awareness of myself something separate from my body? In what began as a series of essays in The New York Review of Books, John Searle evaluates the positions on consciousness of such well-known scientists and philosophers as Francis Crick, Gerald Edelman, Roger Penrose, Daniel Dennett, David Chalmers, and Israel Rosenfield. He challenges claims that the mind works like a computer, and that brain functions can be reproduced by computer programs. With a sharp eye for confusion and contradiction, he points out which avenues of current research are most likely to come up with a biological examination of how conscious states are caused by the brain. Only when we understand how the brain works will we solve the mystery of consciousness, and only then will we begin to understand issues ranging from artificial intelligence to our very nature as human beings.
A popular series which presents the latest scholarship by the world's leading scholars in their fields, in easy-to-read manner and assuming no prior knowledge of the subject matter.

Prophets of the Bible tries to identify EVERY prophet in the Bible, named and unnamed, recognised as a prophet at the time, or said or did something which the author identifies as being prophetic that made him or her a prophet for at least that period, and then to relate a (necessarily) succinct, contextual account of their lives and ministries, together with God's eternal purposes and its relevance for today. It is a book intended for ALL, irrespective of church or other affiliation or views of eschatology, but especially those keen to study the Bible and know more about prophets and prophecy and apply this for today. Above all, it tries to encourage the people of God, especially ordinary people, during these "interesting" times. While it tries to explore the various related nooks and crannies of the Bible, including yet to be fulfilled prophecy, areas of contention as well those areas most are agreed on, and how to relate these to todays fast moving and often alarming world events, the author is keen first and foremost to apply sound biblical exegesis principles and to honour the Lord (YAHWEH). In this second edition, besides making changes to existing content, the book includes extra chapters, including attempting to relate Bible prophets and prophecy with what is going on in the world today.
"Priests of the Bible" (640 pp) is a sequel to the author's earlier book "Prophets of the Bible" where he reflected on the life, work and prophecies of the prophets found in the Bible (well-known, little-known and unrecognised). In his "Priests" book he attempts to do something similar concerning priests found in the Bible. After introducing the subject, including information concerning the book, the book is divided into three parts: Part 1 (20 chapters) considers the priesthood and how priests of the Bible went about their duties (attempting to answer the who, what, when, why and where questions); Part 2 (20 chapters) considers the lives and work of named priests; Part 3 (20 chapters) considers what is entailed in being a priestly people, not just priests of the Bible but believer-priests today - those who follow Jesus. This is followed by Part 4 (six chapters), which looks at kings of the Bible and while shorter than the Prophets and Priests descriptions covers similar ground, followed by six appendices relating to the themes found in the book. The book contains several illustrations relating to the subject; it is meant both as a serious Bible study on subjects that are often neglected by Christian teachers, and provides a devotional perspective to encourage today's believer-priests.
